As a ichild, he would be sitting in his uncle's tea shop in the village and every day a kSadhu would cross their village singing devotional songs and young Rafi would run behind him and sing the songs till the Sadhu crossed the village boundary. Later he would sing those songs for his uncle's customers Seeing how good his untrained nephew was at singing, the uncle decided to get him enrolled forformal music training.
