It always fascinates me how they turn the corners and change direction. How do they learn that complicated manoeuvre.

Thank you TKGC for this spectacular Changing Guard in Buckingham Palace, windy day, with also my favorite Irish Guards and Band, and my favorite SDM Gareth Chambers☘️ Is it today's Changing? So Chambers is still the HHDivision's SDM, it seems. It would be so fine!!

05:12 There are different traditions for pacing the minutes amongst the different regiments. Holding the sword by the ricasso is unique to the Irish Guards.

@wu_1116, is that only allowed during the pacing? I ask because I’ve seen several officers holding the sword by the handle while marching

@@charlottecunningham2141During parades, officers hold their swords by the grip within the hilt. Only when pacing the minutes do the Irish Guards hold their sword above the hilt by the part of the blade known as the “ricasso.”

Poor drill in the guard on the right. I think that poor guardsmen will be do some refresh drill and learn to keep in step.

In about 1870 or thereabouts British officers at Isandhlwana in Zululand fled the terrible carnage on horseback bearing their treasured Standards which the soldiers had fought under lived and died for over the years. They were caught by the Zulu warriors I think it was in a riverbed and killed dying to save their flag which meant everything to them. And the horses were probably killed because the Zulu warriors had killed every vestige of life.

AT 6:08 AM I TRIPPING OR DID THEY START PLAYING THE MANDOLRAIN THEME? Also could you explain to an American why the Flag Bearers and Officers walked up to you all?

It's a practice known as Pacing the Minutes. Officers do it to show that they are of sound mind and body, and fit to lead.

A shame the officers still have to have soldier servants. The inner city working class rank and file kept in their places…..

@ Soldier servants still exist and are in use; even as an option. It’s wrong in the 21st century. Fact.
