Am I the only one who saw him shaking doing the push-up and flys? Looks like he needs TRX. My wife bought it. As I get older stability work is what I need. Maybe not the best to use it alone but great addition to weights, bands, and body weight workouts. No need to throw the TRX under the bus!

I'm glad that you made a full recovery because you have a great physique. but that was underdeveloped stabilizers during that push-up. You didn't seem to have that wobble during any other exercise. That's totally understandable. It's very difficult to do push-ups on a ring. It takes a lot of different muscles. I enjoy your videos keep up the content

"You didn't seem to have that wobble during any other exercise."
      ...
      That is completely normal.
For starters, the TRX has a suboptimal resistance profile, especially for a pushup or fly since gravity provides the most resistance at the bottom of the movement which is also where your momentarm (of the humerus) happens to be the longest, you are already at a disadvantage in that position. Many struggle during this portion of the exercise as is, even on a stable surface.
For any type of row it is the exact opposite. For both exerxises though, the resistance is the lowest during peak contraction.
You cannot change the resistance on a TRX since it's always just gravity and thus bound to the laws of gravity. Changing your foot placement (to change the momentarm) changes the whole exercise and you will target different musclefibers.
Secondly, the TRX is a highly unstable tool or training device. In essence the TRX is an unstable surface rather than a resistance. Unstable surfaces lower force output or power output, muscle activation and consequently results, mainly strength.
My personal experience is identical to the science; after months of TRX training I was able to perform pullups, rows and pushups far better with the training straps. Then when I tried the fixed bar or surface again...it turned out that I was weaker than before I ever touched a TRX. This makes total sense if you understand adaptations.
Your muscles are "fighting" this instability, which indeed lowers tension. You are purposefully lowering the total work and the tension on a particular muscle for stability which is of no use anyway. You too can try this, especially if you have access to a smith machine; try pushups on the smith machine bar and on a suspension trainer (both set at the same height) and notice that you can perform more reps and bring more fatigue and tension to the pectoralis major with the bar.
In addition there is one thing I want to refute namely "stabilize muscles" or "stability training".
First of all, stabilizer muscles are a myth, they don't exist as a seperate muscle(group). What exists is neuromuscular adaptation (rate coding and recruitment and synchronization of motor units). What also exists is agonist-antagonist muscles and synergist muscles. These are always activated whether you are training with barbells, kettlebells, cable machines, bands or a TRX.
Balance training, just like every other style of training, is subject to the rule of specificity in training. This means that there is no need for a greater lack of balance as the one you (will) experience during daily activity, athletic performance or fitness endeavors. There is a time and place for stability training, the stability that is necessary for the exercises which will help you reach your goals, such as squats, split squats or lunges (ankle stability mostly).
Essentially by training on a TRX you get better at...TRX. It has no carry over effect to more stable surfaces, the ones you will experience all day every day or during any sport or task you may perform. It is a skill rather than a form of strength, it's neuromuscular adaptation and serves no purpose other than very specific improvement with a TRX. If your ultimate goal is to get good at TRX training then by all means stick to it, if you are like most individuals and your goals are hypertrophy, strength (in the real world) and fat loss then by all means swap it for a stable surface. You can connect a training bar between both straps with the use of a carabiner, this increases stability, you may notice that just by doing that you can perform more repititions of any exercise.

While the title seems obnoxious, it's actually pretty accurate... TRX is not for aesthetic "bodybuilding", it's for functional strength building while using and developing stabilizer muscles and forces you to engage your core on pretty much every exercise. The problem with bands, is you have the majority of the resistance at the end of the contraction, which is not always desired nor is functional. But that's my preference... Dynamic strength > dysfunctional aesthetic "strength" :) PS. building stabilizers prevents injury.

Yes the resistance increases as the band is stretched more.
Then again, suspension trainers don't have the same resistance through the whole range of motion either and would typically give you the most resistance (through gravity) at the bottom of the movement. The problem is you're already at a disadvantage in the bottom of a movement because that's where your momentarm is the largest, your elbows move away from the shoulders (pushup, row...). On top of that you're also getting way less tension at peak contraction.
Therefore to say that the resistance profile of a band is flawed is to be ignorant of the flaws of the suspension trainer.

    1. You obviously have never actually trained with it based on your form. You would get better muscle contraction if you had someone work with you on the straps.
    2. It would help your muscle control and core stabilization.
    3. It would greatly help your flexibility.

I agree that bands are more versatile than TRX in terms of the number of different movements one can perform using bands. However, I think TRX is actually a better tool for hypertrophy (TRX bicep curls and tricep extensions) because at high resistance, bands will not allow you to go through the full ROM with equal force done by the muscle.

    • @realityandnaturepill
      @realityandnaturepill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Neither will the TRX...it's about biomechanics.
Gravity's direction is always down or vertical. Therefore you create more resistance as you create more horizontal distance between where you grab the TRX and where you are touching the ground. Take a pushup for example, it's extremely easy if you are standing almost vertically (barely any horizontal distance between feet and hands so gravity has a smaller effect.
You see, a TRX does not create any resistance, gravity does so a TRX is always bound to the laws of gravity.
More specifically, during a single repition of any exercise, the highest intensity will always be at the bottom of the movement. This is true for pushup, row, bicep curl, tricep extension...
I am definetely not a fan of that load pattern as most individuals struggle at this part of the repition or to "get out of the bottom" anyway, especially beginners. Because of this, most individuals will be under-loading most of the repitition so the load won't be too heavy for them at the bottom.

Suspension trainers and bands both don't have constant resistance, however they have an opposite pattern. Where gravity with a TRX provides the least resistance, a band will provide the most.
Perhaps combining a suspension trainer and bands can have a complementary effect.
Then again you still have the lack of stability with the suspension trainer, this decreases force output and therefore you won't see the same results (hypertrophy and strength).
Bands do have constant 'tension' though and are much more versatile than a suspension trainer. If you could buy one training tool it should be a set of resistance bands.
Other than combining tools I'd rather just have anything with constant tension or a weight.
At the moment there are some compact constant tension cable machines being developed such as the Unitree Pump.

    • @realityandnaturepill
      @realityandnaturepill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nikosaba1664
It's not constant because it's also a weight, meaning gravitational pull of a mass, it's just more stable and has a better load pattern than a suspension trainer.
The pullup is a great exercise...on a fixed bar. More stability is better.
At the bottom you have the least "resistance" because your arms and gravity are almost aligned, that's why you can do a dead hang much longer than a hang at the top.
The most resistance is when your elbows are the furthest away from the vertical line, that's the middle of the movement with 90 degrees angle in the elbows. That's also where your muscles can provide the most force.
Weights and bodyweight don't create a constant resistance, but the resistance usually matches where you are strongest.
Bodyweight and weights usually have almost the same pattern, for example a pushup and a bench press. Your bodyweight is a weight too, just not quantifiable or an adjustable resistance.

I was shaking like crazy (ankles) because of the unstable surface so the woman started explaining how I was weak and not well trained at all.

Yeah, the TRX is such crap, says they guy who, despite being fit, is shaking and panting as he demonstrates the first 3 examples of exercises on the TRX. Not to mention, how he throws shade at the TRX for what he calls a 'fat mans pull-up' then turns around to rave about these resistance bands where he demonstrates the same exercise (basically a row aka a fat man's pull-up) talking about how it's so much better. Out of the two, the exercise, by far, and much more accurately, fits the description of a 'fat mans pull-up' when performed on the handicapped resistance bands. It's gain to see that are constricting back to their starting shape, hence assisting in pulling the person up and taking work off the biceps and deltoids. Lets not forget resistance bands can and are suggested to be used with the TRX to provide more of a challenge. Also, the point of suspension bands is to use the weight of ones body, using resistance bands as shown in the examples in this video, are counterintuitive as they end up doing most of the work, pulling the person up, not allowing the person to truly on his or her muscles to do the work. If that's the case, what's the point?
If someone is worried about safety or skill-level, as an adult (a child shouldn't use equipment without their parents approval and/or adult supervision) a person should have enough common sense to, not only know their limitations, but when trying new equipment out to take it easy and test it first and to be self aware as to how comfortable, safe and secure they feel while using it. If they're new to exercise, have a buddy there to help spot them, help teach them, to motivate them and just in case anything should happen (even a seasoned runner can have a heart attack on a treadmill if, say for instance, they were born with a mild to moderate heart condition). Lastly, for most exercises, equipment and machines, there are ways to modify workouts to fit every individual persons needs. I mean, a person doesn't have to be a genius to know if they never used suspension straps and they havent worked out in a year, that they shouldn't extend the straps to where they are at a 45° angle with the floor than go and attempt a butterfly press. Come on now.

Smart, 45° angle at the bottom of a press equals standing vertical at the top meaning zero resistance at peak contraction.
Newbies have so much of a sticky point and lack of strength/stability with suspension trainers that they'll have to decrease the intensity so much that they'll get nothing out of it.
Meanwhile you don't have to be an expert to realize that anything you can do with straps you can do with a stable training solution, especially if you have a smith machine in the gym (at least the smith machine has a use then). Think of asutralian pullups or inverted rows, pullups, pushups, tricep pushups and tricep extensions, curls or reverse curls...The more stable solution allows anyone (and especially beginners) to activate the target muscle better, because they are not having the fight the unnecessary instability. Look into force output, hypertrophy and max.strength. Listen to experts like Mike Israetel.
For example: how many pushups can you do versus how many could you do with a TRX and your body almost flat? You do realize that you're lowering the training stimulus for no benefit at all?

    • @opcpixie
      @opcpixie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The 45° butterfly remark was in reference to him using that specific example as reason to dissuade a person who may be looking into suspension straps as one of the many paths to getting back into fitness. If a person doesn't feel a particular machine, piece of equipment, certain class or type of activity isn't right for themselves, it shouldn't be a green light to stand on their soap box to expostulate as if they're an expert, with mounds of scientific data and clinical research, when in actuality nearly every gratuitous claim made was moot and did little to abet the intendment for or the plight of this video.
My point being, hold your beliefs near and dear to your heart, share them with the universe, if you're so inclined but do so in a fashion where others know that the comments being made are your opinion based upon your personal experience and don't sit there in some vain, albeit failed, attempt to appear more qualified than you actually are and act like you're offering upvaluable truths to help those less informed out. Be transparent about it and if you're goal is to warn others because you claim to be worried about them, maybe instead remind them to seek assistance or professional training if they can afford that.
If someone is interested in a particular activity to get them off the couch and better themselves, don't discourage that by bashing the thing they're interested in or remark in an overly excessive manner and sharing completely made up statements about how harmful said activity is, so much so that they're likely to injure themselves. All that does is perpetuate unintentional fear mongering, scaring people into talking themselves out of trying something that would be only positive and healthy for them. That's not cool.
That being said, who are you to say a vertical butterfly press on suspension straps is pointless? It's not pointless for someone who just had their shoulder rebuilt. Who can't hold their arm, even just elbow to shoulder height, and rotate the cuff to retain preoperative range of motion. Usain Bolt might not think talking 5 steps is anything but to a super morbidly obese person who hasn't walked much at all over the past 3 years and not at all while unassisted, that 5 steps is, in that moment, their greatest accomplishment. Just because it's nothing to some person, or even most people, doesn't mean it's nothing. Guaranteed it's something to someone.
I mean, doctors worldwide can all agree any movement is good movement. They will even stress upon their patients who use walkers or may even be bed-bound, to partake in 30, 15, hell, even 5 minutes of some kind of movement at least 3 times a week. They'll suggest things like chair aerobics or a bed routine of leg lifts and cross-over reaches with bent knees, even people with total paralysis have home health sides and nurses that stretch them massage their muscles to increase circulation and slow down atrophy and contraction. So, any way a person can be active, pushing themselves above and beyond their normal daily activity level at whatever a good moderate pace is for them and for any length of time, no matter how easy or ineffective it may seem, is better than being sedative. The key being above and beyond their normal, which over time should increase but it's not a race. It's a personal journey that, if they aren't discouraged to do so, can be rewarding and empowering as they take charge of their health and their lives. Hopefully more people will put down the tech for an hour and choose to better themselves, physically because it's not too late; not for them or anybody else. So long as they got breath in their lungs, it's not too late... and who knows, in the future, that person who started their bed-aerobics today might be lifting more than or running further than your average American. Also pre-workout stretches are very pleasant and effective with bands. So I prefer bands but TRX is not bad. As well as a "classical gym" with loads of machines and heavy iron is not poor.

  • @morrisboris6877

I've rewatched the video and support what he says, but only partially.
He starts off with saying there are only 3 things you can do with a TRX: pushing, pulling, but he doesn't mention what the 3rd is. This could be a problem with communication. In bodybuilding, all exercises involve either pushing or pulling, so he is correct.
He goes on to say that because the TRX creates instability, it takes focus away from developing muscles because you're busy concentrating on having stabiity. This is also true.
He then demonstrates how unstable you are when using the straps.
What I don't agree with is that suspension straps will not develop muscles. I used the TRX for a couple of months and realized that I couldn't make gains because I developed stabilty really quickly, so I switched to straps that created rotational movement. It took a few more months after that to develop stability on that one.
After have developed stability, I was able to develop a great amount of strength and muscles with that strap.
The suspension straps will develop strength and mass in the upper body, but is pretty useless with legs. For that, I relied on leg presses, deadlifts, and kettlebell swings.

What makes a workout tool truly effective?
    Attitude and mindset.
You don't have to be an expert on every workout tool or know the perfect form to achieve maximum results. Thanks to today's technology, you can learn from professionals. With platforms like TH-cam, TikTok, IG, and TRX apps, you can easily follow step-by-step instructions. Even if the person in this video doesn't know how to use this specific equipment, they claim it's the worst and least effective. This clearly shows a negative attitude towards working out and a weak mindset. But here's the thing: if the TRX didn't work, why would military personnel use it to train for battle or build their overall strength? And why would fitness instructors continue to recommend it? It's obvious that this individual in the video has made a poor judgment. Instead of promoting the use of the TRX with resistance bands as a more efficient training method, they completely miss the point. Perhaps the gym owns the TRX equipment, or maybe it's even yours, and you're frustrated because you haven't taken the time to research how to use it correctly.
With the right attitude and mindset, guided by proper instruction, you can achieve greatness in your health and strength. Without it, you're just a clueless individual with unresolved issues.

You completely missed the point on the purpose of the suspension strap, as do the many who are promoting it on TH-cam.
The purpose is to develop the stabilizer muscles. these muscles keep you balanced and prevent you from falling over when you move. If used continuously over time, you will develop the other muscles which dumbbells, machines, and resistance bands target.
Besides not being a fan of the brand, i find straps that provide rotational movement to be superior to the TRX

Not sure why you’re trashing the TRX, it’s proven. It’s not for body building but it’s by no means a waste of money. And can you lose the mask when making videos?

Feel and think… 2 completely different things

no. feel/think vs data. data matters and the trx has low activation. guess they didnt teach math/ physics in the 1930s...

Not a single explanation in this video why the TRX would be a "poor bodybuilding tool". Maik, it is not forbidden to train brain cells as well :))

Totally agree. Have struggled to reveal any greatness in the TRX. Pretty much every exercise I've done with it either feels like it's pointlessly easy or going to cause an injury to something like a rotator, lol. If they weren't so easy to make from trailer straps and leftover pvc pipe, it wouldn't exist in my home, lol. Y's, T's , and I's are about all it gets used for over here. Band are fantastic.

      1. It's Maik, not miak, Roland. 2. the title is hypertrophy which is precisely what the trx bands do not deliver because you are unstable. . 3. none of the stuff you quoted is backed up by data. 4. You can't fine tune a muscle . once you join a gym you will realize it.
