This was brought up with my friend, and we came to the conclusion that they have to be good looking, because some 'nerdy' going to Vegas and winning thousands will raise eyebrows to the dealers and security. With these characters, it looks like just a bunch of partygoers who got lucky. And maybe Kevin Spacey picked the best looking students.

Blackjack is really simple, all you have to do is memorize all the basic strategy then move on to a counting method and then knowing how to get the true count and then doing all of that in a casino without raising eyebrows multiple times

So trained memories, mnemonics, expressed in teams with subtle back and forth communications. The winnings were nearly has high as the movie suggests and there was a bump or two in the road. You should read up.
They were also mostly Asian and it took them a *lot* of grinding. This movie makes it seem like they go out one night and return with loads of money. In real life, they made their gains over many nights of playing blackjack.

There is a lot of variance involved and you might get banned too. And while everyone can learn to count cards, doing it in an actual casino is a completely different thing.

the thing is the plus minus count system is actually very easy and even someone who only has math skills up to addition can subtraction can learn it in about 15 minutes.
Counting itself isn't hard, it's maintaining that focus with all the distractions, bells and whistles of a casino as well as having perfect memorization of the basic strategy chart, deviations, and true count conversion. Getting all of that working together with 99.99% accuracy takes about 200 hours give or take.
It's super easy too lol with Black Jack. Start at 0. If the card is greater than nine subtract 1. Less than seven add 1. EZ now go to Las Vegas and get rich.
It's tempting to roast Spacey for his personal life, but let's take a minute to appreciate his skill as an actor. He fools us wherever he appears, on or off the screen.
