Fun fact: as they were writing the game, vanille was written/intended to be the main character, but since lightning had already been revealed to be the main in promotional material, they had to keep it that way. This is why vanille is the game’s narrator and why the last part of the game seems to be more so about vanille/fang’s story
Say whaaaa? I mean the fang x vanille was fine but im glad vanille wasn't the MC of this story. No offense to her character. Still one of my core party members tho.
Had Vanille been kept the main character, a lot of the game's narrative issues might have been fixed. Thank you very much! Your explanation helped me a lot xD I played FFxiii in 2022, but stopped at chapter 7 cause my Controller broke. Finally got a new one today and wanted to continue but totally forgot about everything. And since it was my second run, because I somehow was stuck in my first run I didn't want to redo all of of it again 🤣😅 So yes helped me a lot and now I can continue to play 😆
I love that I started this game just as you finished this video. I'm only on chapter 10 so I'm not done yet, but this is so far one of my favorite final fantasy games. The soundtrack just hits so hard 😫
When I had my ps3 I replayed the story over 6 times. I loved the game so much especially the 1st of the trilogy. To me part two is the weakest of the trilogy while the final part gave ff13 series a satisfying wrap up
I wonder what the game would have been like if Vanille was the main character of this first FF13 game as intended… I love Lightning’s growth throughout the game, but she’s so monotonous in this first game…
I always loved FF13 but found the story way too "complicated" for its own good. It's not super complicated on a baseline level, evil bad guy we gotta stop, but everything in between and the way the story just jumps around like it's a Tarantino movie drives me a bit crazy at times. But holy hell if it doesn't look, sound, and just feel amazing to play at times. Not all the time, but enough to make me love this game.
i am currently playing it finally after having it in my steam library for a few years. Well, i would say i'm playing it, but it plays itself. Cutscene- walks a few steps, cutscene. Fights a few mobs, cutscene, walks a few steps, cutscene- bossfight, cutscene. WTF? lol Fang is best waifu.
Yeah it's why so many people hated it. You can literally tape down the X button and put a rubber band around the joystick pointing up and it will beat everything for you except boss fights lol. I heard 13-2 and lightning returns improve quite a bit from the on rails garbage that 13 is... which is why I'm watching this video as I'm about to give 13-2 a try after ignoring it for over a decade.
I played XIII for the first time this last year around this time. I absolutely loved it. Came to watche this to revive that feeling of playing it the first time. Totally love my gals Lightning, Fang and Vanille.
This game is beautiful. I know some people don’t like how linear it is in the beginning, or the battle style, but for me it’s part of what makes it so good. I’ve played so many Final Fantasy games and this set of games appealed to me in a really unique way. The characters are great, too.
I am currently replaying this right now, my second playthrough since I got it on release day. It's more difficult than I remember xD. But it's gorgeous and I would daresay quite a fun ride.
Candidly, does the last chapter make sense to you? If this question is received as invective, please disregard. I nonetheless pose the question because I very much struggle with finding a way to like this game. I personally do not feel like the character's motivations/actions ever make sense, and the final chapter feels the worst. I genuinely do not understand what their plan was, going into the final chapter, for how they would kill Barty/Orphan AND not kill Barty/Orphan because that would destroy the world. Does it make sense to you?
It's truly the worst. It makes no sense at all. "We'll stop Orphan from killing himself and destroying Cocoon by killing him and destroying Cocoon! Our plan is flawless!" It's the main reason I never bothered with the rest of the trilogy, even though at least one of my friends loves it.
@@thealexfiles303 Really interesting to hear your thoughts. I have struggled with feeling like I am quite alone in finding this plot incomprehensible. I am astounded more people do not have a problem with this game's story, independent of the problems in storytelling.
Thing is, as far as I understand, they knew they had no choice at the end and accepted it. The outcome would be the same whether they destroyed Orphan or not, because the sacrifice would be made anyways. Barthandelous would just kill everyone in Caccoon as a sacrifice. What motivated the party was seeing their friend being tortured and from there, they had to improvise. They didn't particularly have a plan even though they make it seem like they did. That's so true that most of the time everyone is going separate ways trying to find a way of ~not fullfilling~ their focus just to get frustrated afterwards. The whole story is about destiny x free will. They spent the whole game trying to fight their destiny just to get to the end and realise they couldn't. Turns out Vanille and Fang took the power they had that was supposed to destroy the world and used it to save it instead. It was not planned at all. If they didn't do anything, world would die anyways but so would Cacoon's Fal'cie. No one would win the battle. Ofc, all that is just my interpretation.
In XIII-2 you learn that the party's victory in XIII was partially a deus ex machina. They should have lost when fighting Orphan once they became Cieth. Etro took favour on them and this distorts the time line.
Isn't this terribly problematic from a story--telling perspective? i.e., the ending makes no sense without reading/playing/learning stuff from later games?@@Dzzy123
Somewhat confusing to keep up with all the terminology, especially with no premade subtitles, but overall an interesting and engaging recap of FF13. Keep up the good work!
This is a great video. But what it shows is that the game's creators went WAYY to far with the made up words like "fal'Cie" and all that crap, making it incredibly difficult to follow along. Should've just stuck to "aeons" or "summons" to keep it simple
I know that it bothers at lot of people but personally I always loved the fal'cie, l'cie and cie'th dynamic. The mythos in 13 is really interesting, although the game doesn't do the best job of showcasing it. Glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching!
I disagree. You try reading fictional books and they use made up words ALL THE TIME. At least FF13 they reiterated a lot of the same meanings so by the time you get several hours in you very well know whats going on... this is what happens when you write a good story. It doesnt get really good until you take the time to understand the novel's logic and terminology.
The game started handing terms from a dictionary I didn’t know, and it said “what ever move it or lose it” by the time I started understanding things I was over process of being given questions and getting the ability to answer them hours later
I really appreciated the in media res approach. When I first played the game there were definitely some things that bothered me but that wasn't one of them.
I can't believe TH-cam didn't recommend me your channel earlier >.< Really love the voice and the way you deliver the info! definitely a like and a sub from me ❤
Game is properly rated. It wasnt a bad game but a lof of the characters actions didnt make sense. Story wise i get the gist but still pretty lost. I always regreted not playing it but not anymore.
Made enough sense to me. I think the biggest issue was the pacing of the game mechanics. They had this new system but they were worried people weren't going to get it so they kept it restricted for way too long. One of the best things about XIII-2 is that it lets you play with it from the start.
i happen to completely agree that it deserves a spot next to other FF stories as for understanding it, i was lucky that i was the only one that wanted to play the game when it released, no one else wanted to borrow the game in my friend group so i got to just play it through in one go and honestly the game play opens up ALOT at chapter 9 if you can make it then, you got it
I played this when it came out after playing x when it released as a kid. I got pissed at the yojimbo fight and never finished it. I still regret not going back.
I love love love the story of this game. I cried at the end and I still tear up when I hear that song sometimes 😢 People hate on this game way too much.
Honestly I love Lightning as an FF protagonist, but I feel like her story became not about herself half way through and felt out of character. She doesn't deserve the hate she gets but I desperately wish she was rewritten a bit in those later game sections to be a little more consistent.
Although not the point of this comment, it servers as a reminder for me to finish Lightning Returns before XVI drops. But yeah, Lightning is a fantastic character!
Lightning was very populair that is why they did "Lightning return " . I love ff13 and ff13-2 , not so much Lightning return. I want a party and not just a guest and I was'nt happy with the battelsystem in Lightning return. Love the battelsystem in ff13 and 13-2!
@@BirdsOfPlay Oh I heard yall on the video, yall good, Just everyone else including game journalists etc that bashed the game, I felt like back in 2009 nobody gave this game a chance which hurt me cuz this was my favourite game out of the series.
Definitely deserves more love! In general, I also just think it's better to approach things with an open heart. Maybe I just don't get the appeal of hating on things...
@@user-dh2bz7gc2o Main complaints were how super linear the game is until you reach Gran Pulse and the lore being mostly done through datalogs instead of actual story.
We've already finished the script for Lightning Returns and recorded the footage so it shouldn't be too long. Although we're going to be playing Final Fantasy XVI for the next few days.
I have never heard of ff13 beeing bad and if someone ever had the guts to say this up to my face they wouldnt have theyr guts any longer, i love it that much i got myself the whole trilogy two times, once on ps3 and lately on my pc, i even got the solution book just for fun since it also features the unique alphabet
I didn’t know it had a reputation for being bad lol. I remember feeling it was initially painfully linear, until it wasn’t, but still overall enjoyable.
Not to sound a certain way, but how many times are they going to re-use the same exact names in different forms? It just seems like there's as many versions of "Cid" as there are games, just to name one.
ive not played thee sequels to 13, but 13 isolated is such a beautiful story when the ending wraps I all up. I did enjoy ff15, but besides not, none of the characters grabbed me the way THESE did for some reason.
@@BirdsOfPlay you should really consider auditioning for that. Your voice reminded me of the opening narration to the Harry Potter chamber of secrets game or the Divinity original sin 2 narrator. Lovely voice
The battle system had a lot of potential but it took too long to open up and didn't reach the same heights it would in XIII-2. Would love to see the battle system reworked a bit for a rerelease so that the story can truly shine.
I really hope we get a 13 remaster, it's not loved nearly enough for a 7 style remake but a remaster would be great i don't have a console i can play it on anymore 😭
I tried so hard to get into this game, but it just wasn't for me. I missed the old open world type FF that they seemed to go away from with 10. This game looked beautiful but I just couldn't find a hook to get me into it.
Can someone sum up Barthandanus' plan in simple man's terms to me? The parts of his plan were revealed separately with so many twists and turns it became a convoluted mess.
Bart is a sanctum fal’cie(from cocoon). Bart and the other cocoon fal’cie want massacre everyone on cocoon in order to call back the Maker(god) to the world. But cocoon fal’cie cannot directly damage cocoon. So Bart manipulates the pulse l’cie(our main characters) into doing it for him.
In the end, Barts plan fails becuase the main characters kill Orphan, rather then destroying cocoon. Killing orphan put the sanctum fal’cie into dormancy or killed them(both i think).
@@AntipaladinPedigri Yea! It’s what makes them tragic in a way. They want to die but can’t kill themselves and have to keep preserving cocoon at the command of beings that already their world(Lindzei, Pulse). I think Bart says something in the games along the lines of “we yearn for death but cannot achieve it ourselves bla bla”, it’s been a while lol.
I bought a PS3 at 689e back in 2006, which is 863e in 2023-ish only to play FF13, which came out way after the ps3 release (2010). I really hated the game, pull my way through till I'm was on Gran Pulse (the big planet), and then I gave up the game, in fact I hated it so much that I gave up on gaming altogether... the ps3 slept for years... until a jailbreak was release and I installed RDR, which was the biggest slap I've ever had until that point.
I replied almost all of the main ff games to prepare myself for ff16( I played it and finished it on launch yes it’s a great game) and I admit ff13 was and still my favourite ff of all time only ff7 remake is better than ff13 in my opinion
Played the game on Xbox, i really liked gampplay and characters, but the whole game felt like an intro. When i finished it i was like.... that's it? I never got the feeling of accomplishment other ff games gives you once you see the credits. It felt incomplete.

We wish you all the best on your Final Fantasy XIII journey!
I love that I started this game just as you finished this video. I'm only on chapter 10 so I'm not done yet, but this is so far one of my favorite final fantasy games. The soundtrack just hits so hard 😫
Hope you are loving the game!
Bro were you the Marquis Ondore? Your voice is amazing
whats the song at 16:00 ?
The theme for the Sunlith waterscape, if I'm not mistaken. 🎶
Wow it was so good to watch a recap my friend. You put a lot of work into it i can tell, so take a sub and like! :)
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for acknowledging our hard work! We appreciate both your sub and your like, not to mention your comment!
please do 13-2 and lightning returns!! my favorite trilogy of all time 🥺
Working on it. Will finish the script for 13-2 today!
i am currently playing it finally after having it in my steam library for a few years. Well, i would say i'm playing it, but it plays itself. Cutscene- walks a few steps, cutscene. Fights a few mobs, cutscene, walks a few steps, cutscene- bossfight, cutscene. WTF? lol
Fang is best waifu.
Totally love my gals Lightning, Fang and Vanille.
hahhaa
This was great. You mad me cry😊
This game is beautiful. I know some people don’t like how linear it is in the beginning, or the battle style, but for me it’s part of what makes it so good. I’ve played so many Final Fantasy games and this set of games appealed to me in a really unique way. The characters are great, too.
My favorite character from Final Fantasy XIII is Lightning, because she reminds me of Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls.
Great stuff!
I am currently replaying this right now, my second playthrough since I got it on release day. It's more difficult than I remember xD. But it's gorgeous and I would daresay quite a fun ride.
I'm so glad you're enjoying it! And I agree!
The game gets really hard starting chapter 10 I had to do some christarium farming to do some bosses
I haven’t played this one yet but it’s next on my list, can’t wait to watch this after!
Wish you all the best for your playthrough!
15:05 is my favorite version of this song final fantasy 13 had the best music hands down besides crisis core
Loved the narration but suggest to lower down the BGM just a bit. Can you do 13-2 next and maybe Lightning Returns. Thanks you
We're planning on doing XIII-2 and Lightning Returns this year!
@@BirdsOfPlay Super!
I can't believe TH-cam didn't recommend me your channel earlier >.< Really love the voice and the way you deliver the info! definitely a like and a sub from me ❤
Such a great game! Thanks for the great video!
Always nice to hear from someone who appreciates XIII. Not to mention if that person also likes this video!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Means a lot!
i happen to completely agree that it deserves a spot next to other FF stories
as for understanding it, i was lucky that i was the only one that wanted to play the game when it released, no one else wanted to borrow the game in my friend group so i got to just play it through in one go
and honestly the game play opens up ALOT at chapter 9 if you can make it then, you got it
I played this when it came out after playing x when it released as a kid. I got pissed at the yojimbo fight and never finished it. I still regret not going back.
Love this channel
We love the love!
I love love love the story of this game. I cried at the end and I still tear up when I hear that song sometimes 😢
People hate on this game way too much.
Love the battelsystem in ff13 and 13-2!
idk wtf yall was on about ff13 was amazing
We love Final Fantasy XIII. We're just mentioning its general reception.
@@Sammy102093 ff10 is the same but people love that game ... I love both
Wish they would put the 13 games on Switch
The more people that can play them the better!
Agree agree agree! I think switch can handle the graphic demands.
Bad??? I love this game. Didn’t get to play past the first part, though only 13.
If you ever get a chance to play XIII-2 I highly recommend it! I'm currently replaying it to record footage for a complete story video!
@@BirdsOfPlay Will do. Thanks for the recommendation.
I can't wait to see the videos on the sequels
We can't wait to make them!
This includes 13-2 and lightning returns?
No, there is a separate video for XIII-2 and we are working on Lightning Returns! Stay tuned!
@@BirdsOfPlay Oh great, I'll be waiting for it. Never got the chance to play FFXIII on my PS3 and it's not available for PS4 so I want a full summary
We've already finished the script for Lightning Returns and recorded the footage so it shouldn't be too long. Although we're going to be playing Final Fantasy XVI for the next few days.
So nice to hear Ragnarök correct 🇸🇪
I just got out my old ps3 and started on ff13 again brilliant video tnx
i love these
More on the way!
I’m still confused but this story are rewinding it many times
Watch as many times as you like! 😁
Why does this game looks so smooth, was there a remaster or something?
Xbox re-relesed them in 4k, and 60fps.(Except the first game)
I never understand the combat systeem 😢 i was just button Smashing...
I’m saying, I will defend and love this specific series til the end lol
My guy 👏👏🔥🔥🔥
Ooooh my favorite FF
Great taste!
An intellectual among the commons.
There's dozens like you!
(Tbh they released 3 freaking games on the same world, so probably not many people hated it as much as a few of us did)
SAAAAAAAAAME!
That's not something you see often, and I respect that !
I might be the only one but it be nice if they port all ff 13 games to ps5
That would be fantastic!
I didn’t know it had a reputation for being bad lol. I remember feeling it was initially painfully linear, until it wasn’t, but still overall enjoyable.
I love your voice!
Not to sound a certain way, but how many times are they going to re-use the same exact names in different forms? It just seems like there's as many versions of "Cid" as there are games, just to name one.
Probably many more times since it is all very deliberate.
Such a masterpiece of a game.
Hopefully we managed to do it some justice!
I remember playing this and this was one of the greatest games I have ever played
ive not played thee sequels to 13, but 13 isolated is such a beautiful story when the ending wraps I all up. I did enjoy ff15, but besides not, none of the characters grabbed me the way THESE did for some reason.
I had to use AI to explain what pulse, fal'cie, la'cie, grand pulse, cocoon all was in real world terms. Makes so much sense now!
tbh i was kind of shocked to find out people dont like this game the story is abit mid but the character design and the music is sooo good
Are you a professional narrator or voice actor? I feel like I'm listening to a dungeons and dragons campaign
Nah, just a dumb man in a broom closet. Thanks for watching!
@@BirdsOfPlay you should really consider auditioning for that. Your voice reminded me of the opening narration to the Harry Potter chamber of secrets game or the Divinity original sin 2 narrator. Lovely voice
Lightning is amazing. Equally beautiful and warrior she's the sole reason I recommend the game.
Love Lightning!
Imcel
I didn't like the battle system but I liked the story, I love Lightning, shes so damn cool.❤
The battle system had a lot of potential but it took too long to open up and didn't reach the same heights it would in XIII-2. Would love to see the battle system reworked a bit for a rerelease so that the story can truly shine.
The cocoon name drop in about every cutscene makes me go insane but the story is great. (PC version is a stuttery/buggy mess as well😢)
Are you... An "enemy of Cocoon"?
I really hope we get a 13 remaster, it's not loved nearly enough for a 7 style remake but a remaster would be great i don't have a console i can play it on anymore 😭
I actually enjoyed the shit out of this one. Definitely felt a little wild at times though haha
We all like getting a little wild from time to time! 🐺
@Sebastian Shrader Thanks. Makes sense now.
@@sebastianschrader838 that already ... their world?
Thank you for this. I played until chapter 11 but just could not do it anymore. It´s just not for me.
My favourite Final Fantasy. It has the best lore.
Great lore indeed!
It felt incomplete.
thanks
You're welcome 🤗
