Wow! Thank you for the compliments. Please send me a PM and let me know who you are and what year you took my class. It's great to be appreciated for my former profession (now retired) and one of my favorite hobbies. I must post an updated version of this video. Tormek has since come out with a small knife jig that attaches to their regular knife jig (a clumsy affair if you ask me) but my jig still does something no Tormek jig can do: sharpens machetes.
@@hermantrivilino1689 RE: a clumsy affair if you ask me Yes it is! Someone made a much cleverer jig for smaller knifes here - if interested: /watch?v=MF8nWESRd_c?t=539 Your jig looks good too!
Perfect! Bought a tormek knockoff, hated the knife jig, looked at belt sanding systems, way too expensive, saw their angle guides, then researched diy guides for then 6, found buckle guides modification, but still didn't want to buy an expensive machine. Found your video!!! Making that this week, also buying a Cbn 1200 grit for secondary grinding. I think I found the perfect system now for me. Thank you, keep up the good work!
I'm going to make one today after reading through a lot of your comments on the Tormek forum, really excited to see the results. Thanks for this Herman!
Thank you. I don't have the scissors jig yet, but saved it yesterday to purchase it later. I just happen to have several pieces of aluminum, that will be perfect for this.
absolutely brilliant....I cannot thank you enough for posting this video! I was going to purchase the knife jig until I saw a few vintage on it, and, like you said, it looked as though it wouldn't fit my needs (smaller knives) I have the chisel jig and will modify it like you did yours. thanks again
Thanks for posting your innovation. My neighbor made one for me and I love it....especially on small knives and rounded parts of all knives. I am still new with my Tormek but I doubt I will ever use my 3 Tormek knife jigs.
The only down side of any work rest or jig that you run the knife along like this is that you can end up scratching the sides of the knife. Scratches can be a problem if you are doing this professionally. I think it would probably be less of an issue with a wet system though. The water helps contain the grit which would reduce the likelyhood of this happening I would think.
You should join the Tormek forum. Lots of folks there can give you answers to your question. The Tormek machine is portable but requires electricity to run. It's good at sharpening lots of things, but not everything.
Pretty sure I can make all that at work out of aluminum or stainless. Great idea & simple too, very functional. Like all things it will take a knack to get used to but I was sharpening knives freehand. I am doing a decent job but having a jig just helps assurance of equal bevels. Just have to watch for the burr to appear & flip it over, rinse & repeat! TYVM
Excellent. However I did find that the bottom of the curve of my pocket knife meant that the handle hit the body of the scissor jig. Also, it wasn't immediately apparent that the mod needed screwing on to the right of the jig as shown in order to centre it on the wheel. Love it though. Thanks
This is brilliant. As a new person to the sharpener system, I simply astounded that this already hasnt been made as an additional item. The "platen' could be made wider to suit the bars length as to make a sturdy platform to sharpen machete's and other longer bladed items. Equally speaking this could also be used with another stone/ single point diamond tip to allow a truing pass, with such a stable reference... Another person mentioned have a potential to scratch the blade upon the platen as it it passed by, a teflon or the like sheet affixed to this would help eliminate the potential.
you should have it patented, seriously. i just got a t-8 with every tormek knife jig available, and have used the system for about 10 hours on 2 separate days. turned out, in those 10 hours, i spent at least 7 hours adjusting and fixing the jigs and angles. very frustrating. often enough, the angles were right, and the jigs were on, but then while gliding through the bar, knives attached to jigs would flip over in the air. maybe i pressed on them too hard. it ruined the cosmetics of my takeda gyuto, as well as my shun damascus chef's knife. i gave up using the jigs and just held the knives with my hands. the results were much more satisfying. but again this is a tormek so i am after precision sharpening. with your customization, the jig is easy to handle and the angle is locked dead on. i am not handy and don't have the tools to drill holes on metal. so if you want to make some easy money i will pay you well for customizing my scissors jig, please. and thanks for sharing this valuable video.
Herman, Thanks for posting this video! Is that a modified micro adjust nut on your Tormek or is it an accessory Tormek makes and sells? Thanks Tom....aka tshiker on the Tormek forum
Tom, that is a home made micro adjuster. Before Tormek came out with the micro adjust feature the shaft on the US was unthreaded, so I threaded it myself and then made that micro adjust nut. There's a discussion of it on the Tormek forum.
With practice it's easy to get uniform bevels. With the grindstone turning towards the knife, the knife stays in contact with grindstone. There is no tendency for the knife to "hop".
Andris Kompelien Your name suggests that you may not be American. In this country what I said is a "tongue in cheek" compliment and I am sure Herman took it that way. I hope he did anyway! I do have a dry sense of humor that is hard for some people to understand. Glad it made you laugh.
I still have your applied physics book from college. This man is a genius and it was an honor to have taken his physics course!

Amazing. Such a simple solution but so effective.
small knives have been my problem, what a great idea! I need to find someone to make me one.
I'm going to make one today after reading through a lot of your comments on the Tormek forum, really excited to see the results. Thanks for this Herman!
Absolutely fantastic Herman! Simple, least amount of adjustments and you took advantage of something you already had. Great job I like it.
Thanks Mr.Herman for sharing your idea. Today I made my jig end it works perfectly.
Hello Herman, love this jig, have you perfected it yet? Do you have any for sale? If so, let me know, I want one. THX, David

Best idea in year!
I think the metal plate also needs some cover to prevent scratches on the knife. That may be painting or some felt.

Like most good ideas, simple smart and better than useful for those difficult items. Worth the effort of making it in the few minutes it would take.
perfect. just what i'm after. thank you.

I noticed, too, that the video reveals a grindstone in need of truing.

sure looks like great tool...........
Nice jig but your stone isn't running true, I would dress it before using it again.
Wow, just noticed 10 years ago
It would be nice to know the length of the piece of steel that was added.
54ricko the width of the wheel and approximately 5” for length
simply brilliant
Have you found to have any uneven beveling with this jig? Or the blade hopping ?
Excellent. However I did find that the bottom of the curve of my pocket knife meant that the handle hit the body of the scissor jig. Also, it wasn't immediately apparent that the mod needed screwing on to the right of the jig as shown in order to centre it on the wheel. Love it though. Thanks
Can you tell me the size of the piece? It looks like 2” by 6”.
Is it possible to make this with tool resting jig instead if scissoe jig?
Is that a piece of lawn edger blade that you are using?
This is brilliant.

Thanks for this.
I have two Tormek knife jigs, the larger one at 100mm and the small one at 45mm, the small one will hold that knife to work easily.
Nice job Herman !!! Tell me please what is exact lenght of your piece of steel ? in millimeters please..hahaha !!!

I am a Tormek user and see your posts frequently. You may not be a genius but you will do till one comes along. I am "jeffs55" on the forum. thanx
Jeff Stanley That might have been the worst compliment I ever heard... lol
