Bollywood: Haaa haa chal boltha hoon😠. Hum intne saalomse movies banarahe tho poora ka poora movie distribution/market hum khudh control karte hain, aur hum acchey quality movies ko theatre mein nahi aane dete thaaki zyadha se zyadha log buddhu ban baitein. Lekin mujhe ye bathaon, tum "Aam aadmi" hoke aisi smart questions kabse poochne lage? Tumhe acche/bure films mein pharak kaise patha?

Isi liye Newton jaise independant films ke bare mein mujhe se baath kar rahan hain. Vaise movies mere bas ke baath nahi. At 3:16 you have included the poster of "When Harry met Sally".
It's not a typical Romantic movie.
It does not start with love at first sight or stalking or something else you mentioned.
It's the opposite. It starts with the pair not going well with each other, clash of opinions.
Then they dont even spend time with each other, they don't even become friends in the first place. They become friends gradually and after 5 or 10 years after they first met. They don't fall in love all of a sudden.
It's a good movie among the other posters you've included.
This is for the people who haven't seen the movie and think that it's a crappy movie.
    It's not.
I'm not blaming the creator for this mistake. He might not have noticed it.
    Great content by the way.

This is pretty spot on, man, especially the ways in which the idea of 'true' love sometimes translates into something disturbing. Just one thing I'll point out is that while the importance of verbal communication needs to be emphasised, human beings have a tendency to communicate more through body language than through words, and while Bollywood has exaggerated it, intuitiveness and other forms of non-verbal communication, especially in couples which have been together for a some time, is perfectly acceptable and natural.

This is utterly irrelevant from the video, but I am curious about knowing your views on the film please.

Whoa hold yer horses mate, romanticism as an era in literature has nothing to do with the soppy notions of romance we have nowadays. Romanticism was more about embracing the idea of feelings as a motivating factor, the power of the individual and the value of their own experience. So you have asshats like Verter pondering on things, or dr Frankenstein challenging the authority of the creator, etc.. The concepts of love you are referring to emerged in literature somewhere in the late XIX century.
BTW not all your viewers know the language, so subs would be appreciated. Cheers!

Exactly his point, romanticism is the problem. Like in ur words- "the feelings" "the power" of "the individual" "the value" of one "own's experience". Isn't that what all of this looney post-modernism of today predecated on? Ruining the institution of marriage and family, diluting the purpose of love from higher virtues to mere sexcapades between two individuals

This is something that we discuss everyday. There are so many stories about India but Bollywood thinks that the only topic that is worth making a movie is LOOOOOVVVVVEEE. I've taken a break from Bollywood after 'Jagga Jasoos' because I can't waste my money watching these half-arsed movies. I prefer to watch movied that're coming on Amazon Prime, like Trapped and Death in the Gunj. But no more of this mainstream horseshit until Bollywood realises what a skewed reality they're portraying. Thanks for making this video!

The reason is simple. These filmmakers in Bollywood live mostly lavish lives and have zero clue about the lives of the common man. They have ample time for love, relationships, breakups and such nonsense since they don't have to worry about jobs, financial security and education that an everyday man faces. So for them love is the only topic in life these other issues can be lived without.

As much as I agree with the most parts of your explanation, I feel you have shown only one side of the coin. Films, definitely affect and influence society but the process happens the other way round too. Films are a reflection of the society, as firstly, they are made by people emerging from the society itself and secondly those very films are the ones which people choose to go and watch. Having said that, I'm happy about the fact that there is an evident change in the society with the second decade of this century. Thanx to Internet and the power to choose the content you would want to watch at any time you want.

A great analysis, needless to say. But I don't think that bollywood movies ruined love because of the way they portrayed love.
Yes, the way they portrayed, and continue to portray, love is not real. But, many people watch movies because they are not real, because they display something which serves as a respite from the real world, an escape. At least, that's how cinema watchers approached movies in the beginning.
Bollywood destroyed the notion of love because they keep on showing the same thing again and again and because there was no one who could show love in the real way, in mainstream cinema.
According to me, we need both realistic and "imaginary make-believe" cinema in our industry running parallelly with equal amount of target audience in the box office.
But I agree that it has to some extent, distorted our concept of love in the real life.

Way ahead of it's time and brought a woman with desires into limelight, which was unique in 2003. Amazing stuff man, keep it up !

For me, love is the highest level of intimacy that adds value to our lives and gives us comfort. Someone who accepts and likes us the way we are. People who love each other help us become the best version of ourselves. And this is very rare to find but not impossible. For this we should be open to meeting someone and be present by removing all the stereotypes. And if you don't get it, then work on yourself. Do anything that makes you happy. You will definitely get it sometime.

Much awaited video on Romanticism. Marvellous one.
It can't be denied that these movies affected us thoroughly over the years. The idea of love is imposed on us by these movies in the manner they wanted. No one tried to experiment. Though I think that Imtiaz somewhere changed the way we used to see love stories but at the same time he lacks many things you mentioned in your video.

Just came across your video. And I would like to point out wherein you mentioned about this delusion that when in love we won't have to express anything but the other person will himself/herself know. I can tell you that I have myself done this past. And guess movies do have major impact in our lives. These things are not possible in real life. Communication is a major part of any relationship. The other person in not Parmatma that he/she will know everything going on in our minds. And these can sometimes be a reason of breaking down a relationship. Thank Goodness, I realized this.

I have watched other videos made by you and this was the best! I felt that in most of your videos you analyze films based on technical aspects of filmmaking and citing examples to explain those technical concepts and elaborate their application. In This video, however, you engage with questions of representation .i.e representation of love, of gender and how that shapes viewers' mindsets. Thanks for that! I would also like to add that Bollywood cinema propagates a narrow idea of who can be in a relationship or in love, usually young males and females. Same sex love, or love between older people is disastrously represented or is completely absent.

I'm not Indian, but since I started watching Bollywood films I really loved them and I deeply respect and appreciate the amount of work and effort that goes into a production of a Bollywood film. They're master pieces. There's truly nothing like Bollywood films. That being said, you're absolutely right and spot on with your analysis. One other thing that really strikes me with all Bollywood films that some audience might run the danger of believing would occur in their realities, is just the profound amount of coincidences and conveniences that end up working out in the protagonist's favour. All the protagonist has to do, is just be brave and take risks on an adventure and everything will somehow always work out in the end, exactly how he/she wants it. In some films it gets to a point where you think: "Come on, I know this is a movie, but even for a movie's standard this is gone too far". No matter where the two potential lovers go and what they do, fate somehow brings them back (it's just meant to be). I'm sure some people believed in this at some point and soon were very disappointed to find out that's just not reality.

And it's not that the interpretation of love that is presented by the cinema is what made people this way, some people just really are that way- relating the cinematic life with reality.

I used to think Maniratnam comparatively knows how to show love correctly, but after watching "Kaatru Veliyidai" I was disappointed. That film was a perfect example of "gas lighting abuse", but people say its love. I do like few of his previous movies though, they were ok for their time period.

3:17 I don't know how relevant this can be, but I think Love Actually, as smeared by Hollywood's fingerprints as it seems, sends out a positive outlook on love in comparison to normal Hollywood standards. Unfortunately, it does fall in the "all are supermodels" cliché, and has a very Hollywood-polished feel to it. At the same time though, through different storylines, it tells of a simple attraction of one moment, which to me is the most normal, the "love of my life" story, to the person who just wants a good fuck. Just my two cents here

Anil Kapoor's character not only shelters her but also gets married to her. Aishwarya Rai just express her gratefulness to him. Given the fact that even today how many man would accept a girl who is rapped, this was a very progressive movie in 2000.
