    When my father died back in 2005, I decided to hold on to all his old camera gear - mostly Nikon film cameras, which I have used quite a bit - but also a very clean, near mint condition Rolleiflex 2.8F, which I have kept on display in my office, but never used. Your video will change all that. I can't wait to see what results I can get with this beautiful camera.

      @NegativeFeedback There's no point in denying it, You'll never have too many cameras. Give in to your TLR desires.
      (bonus TLR tip for when you definitely start shopping around for one tomorrow: I've got a C33 that I love but people aren't kidding when they talk about the weight - that thing is a beast)

      It absolutely is a tank. Stack two bricks together, add some shiny metal and voila - you have yourself a Mamiya TLR haha.

      I'm probably getting a Mamiya c330 soon, TLRs are amazing for a lot of unique work and they totally change your shooting style, plus after using my Pentax 6x7 for months the size/weight isn't too bad

    Matt, the “sportsfinder” option where you look through the two cut outs is useful on occasions. Many years ago I was a press photographer and used a TLR on assignment, it is useful to track a person who moves around quickly and unpredictably - very difficult using the viewing screen because the left and right is reversed. I remember being outside a court house trying to photo an individual that didn’t wish to have his picture in the paper, he moved very fast and I wouldn't have got the shot unless it was in the 'sports finder mode'!

    When I was Navy Journalist back in the late 60s on the Aircraft Carrier Lexington.. I had occassion to use the Rolleiflex... Man I loved that camera.. more than any camera I've ever used since..
    I also used a huge, speed graphic camera... love the quality photos from that camera.. That's when photography was so much fun.
    I now use a Nikon D7100 and for my TH-cam videos, I use two Canon SX 30 IS... That Canon is great for video.

    Matt didn’t mention the filter compensation adjustment. A small rotating dial coaxial with the iso dial. Simply match the exposure compensation with the number engraved on the filter ring and the exposure meter.is adjusted to match. Look for the numbers, -1, -2 etc on the various filters and match that on the camera.

    I got the explicit privilege of buying my County’s Newspaper’s Rolleiflex 3.5F, and it’s Carl Zeiss Planar. The photos have been exquisite, totally mindblowing!!! I used b&W opened to 3.5 for Bokeh, and the photos are breathtaking!!! And I am just a simple human in Awe of Carl Zeiss and Rollei. They are beyond 4K Printing. And all from a 1959 Camera!!!! Medium Format blows away 35mm, and even my skill using the sunny 16 rule, and the results made us thousands$$$$

    Good review, however I would like to comment on your remark about the open viewfinder ........ "I don't know why people would want to use it" ? you say... Well, in the days when Rollei 's were used a lot by reporters and wedding photographers these we used a lot to deal with people moving around and the need to shoot very fast. And guess what...the small viewing lens under the small window was your greatest help and only Rollei cameras had that feature ! The image you see is centered, protected from sun coming in, reversed but that is not a problem, We all had experienced shooting with 4x5 cameras (using frames for quick finders and ground glass whenever it was convenient. I'm talking about the late 50's up to late 70's. Open finders will save you precious time and let you get the shots you want before the other guys......
    A terrific feature to try using although it may take a short "getting used to".

    The power of the 6x6 is truly unleashed with an old fashioned projector. You can step right into the screen. It's a pain but needs to be experienced to contrast the e screens we're getting used to.

    Hi Matt - I see I commented on this video five years ago as a Hasselblad owner! I've since just bought my first Rolleiflex, a 2.8 E! Took a while but can't wait to start shooting my 6 month old son with this, I've missed medium format since selling the Hasselblad, and I think this will be a great replacement. Thanks again!

    Another great review !! It is indeed a "dream camera" but at the end of the day, the person behind the camera is the one who makes the difference. And you, my friend, make all the difference in the world ! Honestly, you re such an inspiration and push me to shoot more film for my family moments !! Thank you for that. And one more thing .... please make a "tutorial" about shooting kids with manual focusing cameras !! My girl is same age as yours and wow ..... I'm so impressed you get so many in focus pictures, whereas I'm literally struggling and chasing her to make just one good frame !

    I think the square hole on the front is called the sportsfinder, and was used for photographing things that are difficult to keep track of with the lateral flip created by the WLF, most obviously athletes. I've never used it on mine, though.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    great video matt, but also one way of reminding oneself of the loading drill is the name is Rollieflex, so one silver roll on TOP, loading right. the reason is, that this roller hides one other below it, acting on a toggle mechanism this engages the counting gears, but it relies on the thickness of 120 film +backing paper to arm the counter, so another tip, NO 220 film in here!!, as the counter won't engage, not thick enough to toggle the mechanics.
    Also the '35 mm convertor' is called a "Rolliekin" they are made in 3 or 4 versions, depending on the model you have (2.8,3.5 or others); but a viewfinder mask and the rewind handle is required, as for 120 the film is NOT rewound, like movie film, or reel to reel magnetic sound tape recordings,so this must be modified to the film used.

  • @francislock9734
    @francislock9734 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No one ever seems to mention that the Rolleiflex/cords have parallax corrects viewfinders, also the closeup filters(Rollienars) are parallax corrected which is one of the reasons they are so nice to use

  • @joesasser752
    @joesasser752 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I've been shooting Rollei TLRs for probably longer than you've been alive. Did you forget about the sports finder? I shot weddings when I lived on Maui, it really came in handy.
    Now I'm happy with my 3 favorite models: 1945 w/75mm Tessar, 1951 w/75mm Planar, and 1953 w/80mm Xenotar. Each has its own look, and gets used for different shots.
    My usual film speeds are 25 &100, meter in my head , try to stay within f/11-f/16 for maximum DoF, and process my own stuff to print in the darkroom!

    • @rolandthomasset1713
      @rolandthomasset1713 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Joe...You and I must have the same age !! I've been in love with Rollei's all my adult life...As a wedding photographer I always shot with the sportfinder (for focusing and quick framing) I think too many people overlook the beautiful feature of this finder. Of course having shot with 4x5 also I could easily see the advantages of such practice. You did not always need the precise framing when you had a bride coming down the isle....The main thing was to get her !!!! Then with your beautiful negative you did your nice cropping/framing in the darkroom. The 75mm lens covered a nice angle, the 80 is a little tighter.
      At first people get confused with the upside down image seen through the small focusing lens but it's very easy to become comfortable with it and then your eye moves up to your open viewfinder window. Voila !!!
      I have the 3.5 model without meter (1955) and will never sell it ! Not a scratch on my crank !!!!

    Bought a Leica M3 a few years ago. Despite it being in good condition, first thing I did was send it off to DAG for a full CLA. Well worth it. Anyone who buys an old, high end classic camera should consider a CLA right out of the box. Can fully recommend DAG, too.

  • @Fjalll

    The little square hole on the back of the chimney is called a sports finder. Makes it easier to focus on fast moving subjects without the backwards orientation you normally have when looking down on the ground glass. Assuming you don't have the prism finder.

    I shot medium format with my Yashicamat 124G for years. I love the simplicity
    of twin lens camera's. I like the fact that you can use flash at all shutter speeds.
    As i transitioned to digital, i kept shooting with it and digitizing the negatives.
    Here is the problem: As i scanned the negatives, to allow all the resolution that
    they were able to produce, i would end up with 70-120meg file sizes.
    This is great for fine arts with printing BIG prints.
    However, these prints are way too big for the internet. My point is the extra
    resolutions these camera's produce are redundant for online usage.
    They seem only to be useful if you are printing on paper and big paper at that.
    I would love to hear different opinions.

    The focus peep window was favoured by press photographers. Check focus, check subject, all at eye level and you could watch the subject right through the exposure. Can't do that with a mirrored slr.
    Watch the old newsreels from the late1950s . 95% of the press using Rollei.
    Some still using 4x5s and a few using Leicas.

    I think that little window in the back on the waistlevel finder would be a sports viewfinder. So people could take pictures without having to look down because that would be hard to do at a sporting event. A lot of cameras have these "sports viewfinders"

    So far as I know there is no line to leave the film in a specific position, I have the rolleiflex 2.8E and the moment you put the film below the first roller that has some kind of mechanism that mechanically detects the thickens of the paper and when the film starts activating the counter so when you advance the film it will stop that way you dont waste film that is the reason you always need to put the film below the first roller and does not matter were the start arrow is.

    nice video matt. the zeiss lens on that thing is gorgeous. i think that the fold out on the front of the waist level finder is actually supposed to be a "action" or "sports" finder. I'm not sure exactly what they called it. but basically just to help with moving objects.

    I just picked up a Dejur tlr off of eBay for like $20 haha. I ran one roll of film through it but haven't had it developed yet. Its built like a very simple tank haha no bells and whistles, but the finder looks super sharp although its a bit dark. It has an 85mm f3.5, I think for what I paid its a pretty fun little camera! Cant wait to see results, I'm guessing its probably a decent lens but who knows haha. Great video matt, as always!:)

    I enjoy your videos on a number of levels. I'm considering either a Hasselblad 503cw or the Rolliefllex 2.8f. This is perhaps the most informative video about the 2.8f I've viewed. Thank you. And. There's a documentary photographer of all things Appalachia, Roger May. Roger has been the only photographer I've known who can show love in the simplest photograph. With or without a human subject. I'm seeing that in you. I think perhaps it's pretty important. Walk well.

    I'm getting the Rolleiflex - after all your videos and reviews...sealed deal! Loving that thing (I have one borrowed from a friend right now) and I finished my first roll of color film today - I honestly can't wait for the results.
    What's the deal about the viewfinder? Could you talk a bit more about how you got it to be brighter? And I can't wait to learn a bit more about the color filters - I haven't shot much analog yet...so bring it on :-) Thanks again for your amazing content!

    Wonderfully thorough review, but it would be VERY helpful to list all the info on the guy who fixed your camera in the video description. Hope fatherhood is going fantastic and wishing you and your family all the best

    Thanks for the review it was excellent. I was just given a Rolleiflex, 3.5 C. Having used a Yashica TLR in high school I was excited to have a TLR of my own. Question: I do not have a light meter since I have been shooting digital for several years. but I want to try this camera out. Can I use a Canon metering system to get an approximate setting on the Rollei. If so what method would you recommend? Thanks, You demonstrated how to remove the hood, but my model does not have two button to release the focus screen, Any suggestions?

    Hey Matt, great presentation of an absolute beauty of a camera. Although I could probably figure out the image settings, it would have been good to know what they actually were, but hey, I am nit picking. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for making this video Matt, not only a great insight but really wonderful photos you've shared here too.
    I'm currently a Hasselblad owner but since I'm using that more for people as I move into 4x5 for landscapes, I'm really considering shifting systems and I've always loved the form factor, build and design of the Rolleiflex. This has given me some food for thought!
    I do have one question! You mention the close-up lenses here; can you tell me how closely you can focus with this attached? One thing I've started enjoying lately is using a macro tube with the Hasselblad and I'm wondering how the CU lens might compare to that. Thanks!
    Only recently discovered your channel and I'm steadily making my way through lots of your videos now, lots of great stuff here. Cheers!

    Fantastic. Have decided to get back into film so I am interested in knowing how you get your prints onto computer. The quality seems great so surely it’s not just some standard scanner? A video on that part of your workflow would be cool. Keep up the good work!
