Far too many people confuse public transport with their own private vehicle. If you're paying for a ticket you're not entitled to behave in a way that disregards the collective. Sitting in close proximity to someone else's bare skin is not desirable to most passengers.

The flight crew can make a judgement about what they think is offensive...you don't get to debate them about it.
