It might seem crazy if you think of it as nothing more than a parking brake. However, if you think of it as an emergency brake then it makes a little more sense why the government might require it to work in order to pass inspection. The emergency brake is cable actuated, enabling it to stop your car if your hydraulic breaks fail. I'm not here to make a case as to whether or not a non-operational emergency brake should disallow a vehicle from being operated though, I just wanted to add a bit of context. If I were tasked with coming up with a list of systems that were required to function on a vehicle before it could be registered for use on public roads, I think headlights and brake lights would be understandably near the top of the list, while something as insignificant as a dome light seems almost crazy to even consider. Whether or not I would ultimately decide an auxiliary braking system to stop the car should the primary system fail would make the final list, it certainly does not seem crazy to even consider.

Same here, though I live where hills are quite common and steep in places. Hell, even Tacoma requires you to park with front wheels into the curb if parked downhill, or away from curb if up or you are bound to get a parking ticket from parking enforcement. I know as I accidentally forgot one day many, many years ago, and got a ticket for failing to turn the front wheels appropriately when parked downhill.
VSDC is what I use, it's simple to use and is only $25 a year for the Pro Version. Adding sound is as simple as clicking the add sound button locate the file on your hard drive and then insert. Then you adjust the volume of it and your done unless you want to make it longer or shorter. My Jeep has the electric parking brake, I went into the setting and have it set, to that any time I put the vehicle in park, it sets the brake.

Thank you , Mr. Eric , awesome closing statement , I’m 70 and remember most of that stuff . If you had lug nuts missing it failed but if the hub cap was on it didn’t . True statement from East Texas .
I live in Alabama so I was confused about exactly what you were doing until you explained the inspection issue. I still learned with the trick you did hammering the bolts from the backside with the air hammer to break the assembly loose.
Here in PA, inspections definatelly check ball joints. When I got my first car, I had the inspection done by a guy everyone called "Ball Joint Bill" because every damn car that came through the door "needed" ball joints. It's funny now but not when you made $1.65 an hour.
The adaptors were sold expressly stating they were not to be used to fill vehicles, but to fill fuel cans with small necks, which were almost non existent. that way the EPA could not fine the manufacturers out of business.
I credit the astonishingly easy disassembly of this Subaru to the work being done in the official SMA SubaruBay(tm). Had you been working on this over on Josh's side, you'd have needed a stamshovel to get that bearing out. And don't feel bad about needing glasses. I work with vision scientists, people's vision starts to deteriorate around age 35. Be glad you made it quite a bit past that before needing glasses, some of us have needed to wear them since 5th grade 😕
LOL! I have the very socket Eric (3:10 - 3:35 mins) mentioned wasn't available 17/32" (13.5mm) I scored a set at a garage sale , 6pt 3/8" drive that had every socket from 5/32" thru 7/8" @ 1/32" increments. These odd ball sockets were probably made for custom applications.
I, too, always use my parking brake. I rarely stop without it being put into use. Only times would be at traffic lights when my green signal is only a few seconds away.
I agree with you completely regarding using the parking brake. I too have a long standing practice of applying my parking brake EVERY SINGLE TIME I park. 👍
For the Glasses issues: Get a pair of bifocal lenses and wear them for a few days. If they are measured and fitted correctly you should be able to adjust to them in a couple of days. If you don't want to wear glasses, you could probably try bifocal contact lenses. If you don't like the first pair of contact lenses they give you, don't worry. Contact lenses are fairly different across multiple brands and eye shapes etc.
@johnmcclelland751 if you can't get used to them after a couple of days the optician did something wrong. There are multiple measurements that need to be spot on for the effect to work. Go back to where you got them and either get a refund or let them try again. You may need to consult another optician. Good luck!
Awesome!! I remember the same frustration dealing with nys inspection process. The trooper could write you a ticket for things that we could pass!! 😂 great vid and I’m getting that air hammer!!!!
I know someone that had a ‘78 Pontiac and pulled the plug on the catalytic converter, remove the catalyst, and replaced the plug with an engine freeze plug. Used a fuel nozzle adapter and pumped leaded gas in that car for years. Leaded gas was higher octane (89) and cheaper than unleaded (87) during the late ‘70’s.
Eric, you need to work in Arizona. You would be the only honest mechanic in the state. Inspections don’t apply but Emissions tests do and the state handles them. In order to get a regestration to drive on the street you have to have one working brake light. Nothing else matters. I have seen truck chassis’s with one driver seat. Station wagons with out doors, all four wheels running spare tire donuts down the interstate highways at 70 + mph. Come on down NO RUST either only pack rats that like to destroy wires or interiors if they can get in. Besides all of this the weather i quite warm and mostly sunny. You’re gong to love it !👍✌🏻🙏🏽🇺🇸😎

Bi focals will drive Eric crazy, more than he is now !
Still crack me up to this day Mr O! The lick em stick em thing u did😂 hilarious keep up the great work buddy boy
Yep, pumped many a gallon of leaded go juice. And you hit the nail on the head with that 70 year comment
I'm only 68, but yeah....
Shell Station in North Wilton CT Route 7 next to Bob Sharp Motors. Marty Metternic. Those were the days. Rode bicycle everywhere.
@@SempreGumby Kay's Gulf Station.. Twin City Hwy. Nederland TX. Check the oil to engine rebuild.
Another great video Mr 'O'. You take us along with you and entertain at the same time
" at least something else is still working"... give it about 10 more years 🤣🤣...
Amen!
Little blue pill time
OK Eric O, that really truly stung. YES I remember leaded gas. Yes I am turning 74 in a week. Yes I remember the introduction of the "fuel inlet restrictor." What not one of you remembers is that the restrictor DOUBLED the time it takes to fuel a car. Boy-o-boy do I remember the old days, particularly on these cold windy winter days, here in Michigan.
Burnish, another great word of the day for the youngins. Thanks for taking us along. Disappointed that there was no DRIFT testing of the parking break. :( Inspection 25% safety 75% revenue;)
I'm 70 and I remember the leaded gas. My first company truck, a 1981 chevrolet C-20 was 7900GVW and used regular leaded gasoline. You got me, I'm friggin 70!
Mmmmmmm.....leaded gas.
Mechanic 17 years in the rust belt. So proud of your commitment to quality! I also strive to make "the next guy" proud. You'll prolly be the next guy... Gotta be proud of your work or else what's the point at all?
I use my parking brake all the and sometimes remember to release it before driving off.
Christmas came early boys. The brake clean sound effect is back!
I'm glad I live in the south. Thank you Eric great job 🙏
I haven't had to do King PIns since my 68 Austin Healey Sprite needed them in 1975.
I did kingpins on my '51 F-1 in Sept. Lucky I still have a machine shop who can ream them to size.
There are but a few techs like you. I finally found one whose care for their reputation and caring about their customer. I recently decided one of our cars needed replacing after 17 years of service. My favorite shop bought it for the best wholesale value I was offered by the dealer. That's your sign.
I am so glad that I live in the Deep South. My car is 12 years old and looks brand new under it. This is just crazy that a 7 year old vehicle is rotted.
Same here in South Texas. No need for salt on the road when we only get heavy snow once every 35+ years
Only problem is the deep South has got ignorant idiot mechanics, I live in South Carolina and the best mechanics are not from South Carolina
It's depressing, given that we pay the same price for new vehicles
It's horrible, they depreciate so fast up here. We pray for used cars from the south. Just bought my son a 2016 from Arizona and it's beautiful.
I live in Missouri. I buy used cars in Las Vegas where my relatives live. I fly there, visit for a few, and drive back. Cars here look like junk much past 7-10yrs old
Thank you , Mr. Eric , awesome closing statement , I’m 70 and remember most of that stuff . If you had lug nuts missing it failed but if the hub cap was on it didn’t . True statement from East Texas .
I remember that I used the parking brake on my '06 Rav4 back in '07...not sure why but, I did use it!
I live in Alabama so I was confused about exactly what you were doing until you explained the inspection issue. I still learned with the trick you did hammering the bolts from the backside with the air hammer to break the assembly loose.
brake clean sound made my day 😄
Here in PA, inspections definatelly check ball joints. When I got my first car, I had the inspection done by a guy everyone called "Ball Joint Bill" because every damn car that came through the door "needed" ball joints. It's funny now but not when you made $1.65 an hour.
Mr. O is a rare guy. How many people can make doing drum brake work look interesting? 😁
We appreciate the return of the of Captain Brakleen! He was truly missed. He is his chosen pronoun. Now this comment is PRNY correct. 😅😅
Nice rant at the end! Love it!
I am 61. I remember leaded gas nozzles. And the adaptors to fill unleaded necks with leaded nozzles.
YES--had one !!!
Don't recall the adapters for using lead in an unleaded vehicle, but DO remember leaded gas (59, will be 60 next month).
The adaptors were sold expressly stating they were not to be used to fill vehicles, but to fill fuel cans with small necks, which were almost non existent. that way the EPA could not fine the manufacturers out of business.
@@SeanBZA Like the "test" pipe for the catalytic converters !!
Vice grips makes a 13.5mm 😅
Which brand? (Kidding)
So does an angle grinder.
Thanks Mr oh. That was interesting with the backing plate and the bearing that came out nicely.
"The DAWG don't play" woof woof woof!
I, too, always use my parking brake. I rarely stop without it being put into use. Only times would be at traffic lights when my green signal is only a few seconds away.
Thank heaven ! I thought it was just me that still drove that way.
LOVE the BIG dogs, mama jama..
Bring out the Big Doggs yeah MOMMA..
I was going to say, be careful if considering Progressive Lens. I just got some and they are are just plain garbage. Super expensive plain garbage.
@@TXAG81 don’t forget reduced engine wear on the old flat heads
Change it to a 79 Dodge Ram and you would be talking about my Dad😂
Eric, you need to work in Arizona. You would be the only honest mechanic in the state. Inspections don’t apply but Emissions tests do and the state handles them. In order to get a regestration to drive on the street you have to have one working brake light. Nothing else matters. I have seen truck chassis’s with one driver seat. Station wagons with out doors, all four wheels running spare tire donuts down the interstate highways at 70 + mph. Come on down NO RUST either only pack rats that like to destroy wires or interiors if they can get in. Besides all of this the weather i quite warm and mostly sunny. You’re gong to love it !👍✌🏻🙏🏽🇺🇸😎
They will pull licenses from guys trying to do the job right but then give one to guys that make every effort to circumvent the laws.
Excellent job, once again. You save your customers tons of money, and you do the job right! I would be glad to have a working parking brake if I were the owner.
Brake Clean Music ! Finally !!!
