They might not have intended for this video to be racist but it is. To pretend that this was about optics and not about the additional revenue that a certain somebody (I wasn't sure if I was even allowed to say her name) generated already this year is delusional. Imagine two white people making a video about how the NBA finally gave the players the salaries that they deserved and called it optics when in reality it was because immense popularity of Michael Jordan (I know Bird/Magic started it, stay with me), and the two white people never say Jordan's name or give him credit. And then pretend that no blacks should be upset about this slight.

The bottom line is that more revenue is coming in because of Caitlin, Angel and this new draft class. They’re the reason there’s so much interest in the WNBA all of a sudden and why revenues are increasing. If it wasn’t for that, they wouldn’t get those chartered flights no matter how unfair people think that it is. This new draft class is dramatically increasing revenue for the league and they seem poised to turn a profit this year. I’m watching for the first time ever because I want to follow Caitlin, Angel, Nika Muhl, Jacy Sheldon and Cameron Brink. I’ve watched every game they’ve streamed so far on the WNBA app, and I had to catch a bootleg stream of Nika Muhl’s game last night from somebody on twitter. I’m a first time WNBA viewer. And I have to give credit to Angel Reese for grabbing my attention and the attention of so many other casual observers who didn’t even watch women’s basketball when she made national headlines last year and it was covered by non-sports news media. That’s when I learned about Angel and Caitlin, and following them I learned about a bunch of other players. Now I’m invested in the players themselves which is why I want to see them play in the W.

  • @BodyByIsaac

Lol. They DIDN'T CARE about these women getting harassed or being late UNTIL they got a player that will bring new fans, who smashed college records and who people want to buy tickets for. A simple "Thank you Caitlyn" would be sufficient.

This is simple math. Ticket prices are going up and ticket sales are going up. The cost of commercials will be going up. The CBA will re redone soon. Chartered flights is a win that is able to be done so it was done. CC and the rookie class are good for business. Everyone will make more and the WNBA will have more money to spend.

I think this has a whole lot more to do with dollars, than race, at least in a direct cause and effect sense. There is zero question that Caitlin Cark's popularity is what moved the needle here, and to a slightly lesser extent Angel Reese and some of the other high profile rookies that garner eyeballs. Said differently, IMHO, it wouldn't matter a lick if the video of CC walking through the airport had surfaced, if she wasn't increasing ticket sales, media sales etc. If you are the Commish and you see ticket sales rising exponentially, and you know you are now in a much better position to negotiate with the TV networks than you were before, voila, you know that you will have the revenue available to pay for charter flights. Now, as to the race issue, it's probably reasonable to assume (unfortunately) that if CC were black, she would not be quite as popular as she is now, but there is also a decent argument that her still of play is also a big factor in her popularity. Examples, no one can dispute that Nikola Jokić and Tim Duncan are phenomenal players, but there is a reason why they'll never approach the popularity of Steph Currie. Why because Currie, at his height, is more relatable to many than a 7-footer, and they way he scores is more exciting for many/most than a 7 footer dominating in the paint, even if the 7 footer ends up scoring more points in any given game.

These are preseason games. They still have some time to get it together. The merch is also lagging. I wanted to get my daughter an Ashley Reese t-shirt. There isn't one available. There are no Sky youth jerseys for any player.

Just like it was the optics of Tiger woods, Michael jordan, Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, and now Caitlin clark. What do they all have in common? Only one thing - being phenomena.
That's the bottom line, when an athlete becomes a phenomenon then things will change with the sport. A lot lot more money will come into that sports League or industry and suddenly we're going to find millions of fans and kids following and emulating that sport.
Don't make it something that it isn't.

I paid $35 for a season pass to the WNBA. It should have cost me $135 for the session. When is the WNBA going to charge enough to build a great app and make money to pay the players

Optics? Nobody bothered about optics, or the WNBA, until Caitlin Clark came along. If she was black, this host would be saying her name all day long. Title is clickbait and trying to make money off Caitlin's name.😂

Your guest, Terrika Foster-Brasby, uses too many worlds to explain the core reason for the WNBA’s unexpectedly rapid reversal on now using charter flights which is the drawing power of Caitlin Clark who is filling the WNBA’s coffers. The charters offer high security to protect the CC Golden Egg, and your guest displays favoritism by saying “certain individuals” when we know that it is one individual: Caitlin Clark. And, no, Britney Griner ’s past play is not the current motivation for charters because she neither draw money then nor now to the league; Rather, she was the apposite; She disincentivized sponsors and folks from supporting the league and filling seats. For right now, the WNBA universe revolves around the Caitlin Clark asset which the league must protect, hence the sudden choice to use charters after years of stubborn refusals.

Really trying to compare Britney Griner’s fame to Caitlyn Clark’s. Talk about a reach. Beyond laughable. If Griner or any other WNBA “star” had anywhere near the popularity of Caitlyn Clark they would have been flying charter. False equivalency, a desperate reach out of pure jealousy yet again. As for Angel Reese - can’t wait to compare the game attendance and tv ratings between the two because it won’t be close. Caitlyn Clark already getting full court pressed and double teamed too by her second preseason game. Reese sure as hell won’t, she’s not even half the player and 2 lord knows the alphabet gatekeepers of the league don’t want CC to go off

It gotta make dollars to make sense. The WNBA is probably hedging in hopes that these new players popularity will put more butts in those seats and in turn generate a substantial growth in revenue.

I think the league realized they’ve never had a rookie coming into the WNBA worth 40 million dollars without playing one game. Plus causing arenas to sell out and teams looking for bigger venues. They need to protect their investments.
