It’s been a very hard year in the garden for me, this is only my second year in my current garden. I definitely bit off more than I can chew by starting too many projects at once. It’s so difficult to let things go so that I can have at least one area that looks good. Your videos remind me that gardening should feel fun, not like an obligation and it’s been helping me on the days when it feels like nothing is going to plan out there.
Hello and thanks for watching. I know how you feel, but as you said. Gardening is supposed to be fun. I am always reminding myself to enjoy the journey. I still have seedlings I haven't planted so don't let me fool you. I am perpetually behind...LOL. Happy gardening!
Love the rocks. My Mom found a number of those type rocks and painted cats on them that look like they are curled up and sleeping. I can’t bring myself to put them outside so the two I have are displayed in my house. ♥️
Years ago we built a compost bin system and it did work well but as you mention, rodents did come. Raccoons, moles, mice, voles. Ya, the rodents became a problem. No more composting on my property.
Sue, I have decided that I have to pace myself with my projects and it's been going great. I don't feel stressed and its very enjoyable. Small projects have great rewards and best of all I have accepted that some things will simply have to stay as they are until I get to it...or not 😁. Great video.
Thank you and thanks for sharing your experience with doing smaller projects. I agree that this is a great way to approach gardening. It keeps it fun for sure.
Sue, I purchased that tool the first time you talked about it. I've used it so much that my husband had to sharpen it for me! The rocks are pretty. Every time I put a shovel in my ground, I dig up rocks like that... sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller. There are so many rocks that I have put together two dry river beds. My favorites are the quartz ones...pink and white. Love these little projects! ❤ Lina
Hi Lina and thanks for being here. I am glad to hear you like that tool too. It has become my absolute favorite. It sounds like you have a wonderful collection of rocks. They make such wonderful additions to our outdoor spaces.
We tried to get the heavy stuff done before the heat hit WI also. I definitely have to wear a rolled up handkerchief on my head or the sweat gets in my eyes and glasses. 😂 I was a real mess a couple days ago because the mosquitoes were SO bad I had a head net and long sleeves and was harvesting and weeding the brassicas under their bug netting. Omg, I almost cut the irrigation twice as I couldn’t see and even though the bugs couldn’t get me they were buzzing by my ear 😒. I have that same sickle and I keep storing it safe locations and I forget where I put it😅. It’s very handy when I find it. Oh the memories, I know all too well how you feel. Trips we made up north to in-laws cabin and how places and things use to be. I miss them, my folks and sister, ect. Seems time went so fast and many close family skipped out one after the other.
Grief is a fickle thing isn't it? Those memories come back at the weirdest times. It sounds like you had a hilarious garden experience. Those darned mosquitos...relentless beasts.
Yes, out in my garden Saturday to beat the heat in W. Michigan. Still should've had a sweat band around my forehead. 😂 More power to you, Sue. Those phlox are tough buggers to dig up. Just ordered your tool. I have phlox all over thanks to the David's phlox that went to seed years ago. Of course, they're not true to the parent; so many fuschia and a few interesting variations. Time to show some tough love in my garden too. Thanks for the inspiration! 😊
Hello. A sweat band is a great idea! I was laughing when I watching the video I captured because I was such a mess at the end of the two hours. Dirt on my face...LOL... Thanks for watching.
Hi Lynn and thank you. I was ready to stop by the time I finished that bed. It was a tad too humid for me. I will be glad when the temperatures get back to normal. Starting early sounds like a good plan you have.
Wow that was a big job cleaning up the phlox, looks great! It's in the mid 90's here in Northern Illinois and I've also got seedlings to plant, maybe tomorrow?! This heat certainly makes it tough, but as you said we just need to get up early to get those projects off our list.
Thank you. I just can't take the high temperatures now. When it gets into the 90s, I have to pace myself. It sounds like you are getting similar weather in Illinois. I am grateful I beat the clock on this project. Now I need to plant the seedlings before summer is over 😂.
❤ Sue those rocks are such a sweet of all the lovely times you've had with your parents at their home. I'm glad you're able to showcase them. Great job on the clean up.
I was surprised those rocks got me a little choked up. I immediately thought of being at the Lake house as soon as I saw them. I was using them to shade the roots of a clematis that I had growing in the corner of the bed. Thanks your note Jo.
Those stones would look lovely in a shallow fountain/water feature..somewhere you could see them more often..I’m slightly obsessed with stones/rocks..not sure why..enjoyed the video..good job..I did buy the tool you were using a few months back after you recommended in a prior video..very useful😊
The bed looks great. We have had a huge cool down and it is barely 45 degrees out this morning. I need to tackle a garden area while it is cool and instead I am here watching you. Time to get up and get it done, seeing how wonderful your bed looks inspires me to just DO IT.
Hi friend and thanks for the encouragement. I am amazed how cool your morning is today. I will keep my eyes peeled on your channel to see what you are up to. Happy gardening!
I didn’t realize those allium bulbs produce the mini ones. I will have to keep an eye on it. Where I live the spring Scilla (I think that’s what they are called ) flowers emerge just as the snow is melting. Although it produces a beautiful carpet and spreads throughout the lawns and gardens, what is not fun is removing the mini slender mini leaves and stems , as the foliage makes my gardens look very messy after the flowers die. These flowers are best for woodland areas and fields. Nature obviously found a way of implanting themselves. 🌸🇨🇦
You are right about how nature picks the best spots for plants. I was not expecting those alliums to go crazy in that bed, but as you saw, I have a mess on my hands that I have avoided for years 😂. The past 2 years I just pulled up the foliage.
I love love that tool so much that i have about 5 or 6. That way i have one handy at all times. I garden with my sister and husband and if i pick up their tool instead of mine, i immediately know it is an imposter and go look for my tool .
I adore that tool as well. Honestly, if you told me you are only allowed one gardening tool...the Japanese hand sickle it would be. Thanks for watching.
Hi Sue, thanks for this helpful video. We took your advice on the hand sickle tool, and it has been a game changer for me. I have a diminished grip strength which hampers weed pulling and this makes easy work of it for me. Yay!! Great for several other tasks as well, so thank you for sharing the information. We have already ordered several more for family members. Thanks for all you do! We garden in Michigan with deer and bunny pressure so we appreciate your gardening know-how in these situations. xoxo Antoinette
Hi Antoinette and thanks so much. I am so happy to hear that hand sickle is working for you. That is great news. It truly is my favorite gardening tool.
The water view you showed looked like Grand Traverse East Bay. My husband grew up on that bay with what looks like the same view. I love your tool, must try to get one.
Hi there. The view in the video is from my Mom and Dad's house on Lake Leelanau. The sunrise was something to see coming over the lake. My Dad absolutely loved northern Michigan (understandably so).
Great job with clearing the border but I wish I was your next door neighbour as I would have definitely taken the Phlox David off your hands. I’ve been trying to source it for my white garden without much success. That sickle is a great tool to have!
Question about your brown paper bags from Home Depot. How well do they work for you? I would like to stop using plastic. My concern is rain. Will they hold up for weekly pickup?
I've used them and they are pretty thick. Thicker than paper grocery bags. They will hold up if it rains once-ish before trash day depending on how heavy the rain is.
Mine definitely hold up for the weekly pick up. If they sit on the ground, they can lose the bottom if they get really wet (rainy days), but that is not common in my experience.
We use a very sturdy plastic wheeled with lid attached yard waste container..it was a bit pricey but well worth it as it should last many many years..(already had it for 4) the yard waste people can attach to the back of their truck and it’s raised and emptied..works great for us and them.

I would love to compost, but I just don't live in the right area. I'm amazed at the critters I see wandering the neighborhood at night 😂
