As somebody from near Hamburg who's been there frequently and even around that tower once or twice, I can only appreciate that they're turning this behemoth into an anti-war memorial and turn the brutalist Nazi architecture into something pleasant to look at. This will turn the entire area from having an eyesore to look at to having eyecandy to appreciate. It's good stuff. But I'm not sure who would even say otherwise. Have you been to other places in Germany? Believe I told you about the Tank Museum in Munster ~80 km on the Autobahn to the south of Hamburg, always a good time for a tank nerd.
I went to Hamburg multiple times but I first saw the tower on a school trip in 12th grade. When I got out of the Ubahn station my jaw literally dropped. I heard about these behemoths before but I never saw one in person. Very impressive stuff. Despite, or maybe even because of its dark past.
vienna has 3 flaktowers and one got turned into a sealive aquarium called "haus des meere". its amazing, you can literally spend an entire day in there. so if you ever make it to vienna its worth a shot
Hope you enjoyed your trip here mate. The Übel & Gefährlich is the inside venue and there are some dope concerts and events happening. Sadly the music store inside it closed a couple years ago, not for redesign but because of financial struggles. I wonder how much rent a business pays in that thing. Bonus: The allies tried to demolish the bunker with 20 tons of tnt (if I recall right) but the bunker just decided to burry itself and was still standing.
About the first bit of your commet I was surprised that I couldn't easily find a list of the stores that were inside or a floor plan showing where the shops / venues were inside. I was hoping there was a plan like when you look up a shopping center.
@@TheIronArmenianakaGIHaigs Oh there isn’t really that much of a plan needed, „JustMusic“ was the only store inside that spanned over the majority of space and then there was and still is the club/event venue and thats about it. ^^
Ah yes, remember it clear as day. Always have been interested in WW2, all kinds of aircraft and tanks.. all the good technical stuff, and the history in itself of course. And despite growing up in Germany and my father also being a a hobby historian/almost professional Model builder I´ve never heard of a Flaktower before. So my 15y/o unsuspecting ass comes out of the Metro Station at Feldstraße in Hamburg while being on a field trip and school and as I turn around I see this behemoth of concrete and questionable political views. It was and is quite an impressive slab of concrete. I like the idea of giving it a purpose, especially something nice as a garden. In a City close to where I live, it´s called Emden. Are also a lot of Bunkers that survived the decades and are used for nice stuff. One of them got all of the rooms turned into rehearsal rooms for local bands to rent, which is an pretty awesome idea. It has nice acoustics and you can´t possibly disturb any neighbors with your music when playing in a literal fucking bunker.
I like to think of these as the last castles. Unless of course you want to consider the battles over the concrete commi blocks castles as well. When you look at them, many of their features can be used or easy converted to defensive castle features. Murder holes, arrow loops, crenellations, gate houses, machicolations, sometimes even moats.
Well...heavy anti-bunker munitions will go trough, we evolved well past WW2 designs of defensive structures and offensive weaponry. But anything lesser or not being in fireball of nuke it will survive.
Im still waiting for germany to start doing uh... historical recreations with these... all im saying is that a 128 or two for uh.. display purposes.. would be pretty cool
Maybe this is just me but why does Germany make old stuff ugly. Not saying it wasnt ugly before but they could at least make it look similar to the surroundings and not soviet era buldings.
@@Barten0071 Not really, it would be even more ugly then bare concrete. But some decorative paneling will make it into just another house. I honestly prefer them like that, just a grim reminding.
I'm curious to see how the final project turns out. What do you guys think of rooftop garden?
The rooftop project is very good, but what do you think about the gaming room? Is it a good idea or not?

That feel when the WW2 tower is still intact compared to my house...
Thanks for visiting that tower, it's a shame the tower is still closed for now😔
Most houses aren't built out of heavily reinforced concrete

It still amazes me how durable these towers are.
Good vid Haigs. :D
well they where essentialy castles ment to fight off bombers.

You should do a story on those funny Winkel towers that popped up all over the Reich in WWII.
I never heard of this. I had to look it up seems rather interesting I'm going to do more research into this, thanks for sharing

Lovely video! Great work!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
Reminds me of the final mission of Medal Of Honor Airborne.

i actually find this quite interesting, please do more :)
Seems like a great way to re-utilize the building: built for war, repurposed for life.
This is the same FLAKtower that you can enter in Sniper Elite V2.
The most impressive thing about these is the foundation.
The BBC have nothing on these videos!
Very Nice Goood Bro
Nice
Does flak tower capable survive modern missile/rocket attack?

Talk about ultimate apartment zombie fort
uh guys im starting to think im not on the timtraveller channel anymore
You could visit the flack towers in Vienna.
Its bush camo

Also radar towers were sadly demolished. It could`ve been an amazing museum, like that one shore battery with BB turret.
"Clean energy"😂😂😂😂
This is a test comment.

Bradely's are killing russian tanks, gardens are being planted, nature is healing :)
I dont like it... it looks off
What do you think is off? Like the path around it or the pyramid roof?. Something else? 🤔
I kinds love the wartime things repurposed for peace, this whole thing is a big fuck you to the failed artist
The germabs really cant get over ww2 can they?
Its getting kinda anoying😂
Well the building is difficult to demolish so might as well turn it into something nice
Помоему просто изуродовали башню и всё.

bc its a fucking bunker, what are ya gonna do. Paint it red?
It’s literally a concrete bunker. It was made in the 40s bro. This has “I want to repaint my house because im bored of the color energy”
@@muik6516 paint would be nice tho
