After he gets Brent's job, there are definite changes in maturity in how Crook portrays Gareth (he's still an idiot but a more mature one), which is a testament to his acting.
Gareth has one of the best arcs in the series. He's still a bit of a weedy twerp when he becomes boss, but he displays a level of awareness and clearly learns from the mistakes that David made during his tenure. At the same time, he still keeps the capacity to annoy people, and does develop more ego as boss, but even then he still somehow comes across as a more competent boss than David.
@@diplodocusstevenson7182 really? I mean first Gareth is only temporary boss until corporate has a successor, then David was delusional, insecure, inappropriate lazy and toxic. Gareth is a lot of the same but not lazy, and actually does work.
All Brent's mannerisms are so spot on for the character, I think it's part of the genius of the (UK) office that so much of the communication by characters is body language which often leaks what they are really feeling.
@@noobdave Haha! Much like they touch upon in this very clip, of course racism was always bad, but each generation is rightly less tolerant of it than the one before. Our generation found this shocking, but the older white majority of the time probably barely noticed it
It's always tricky when you take clips from this show out of context, because it's such a context-heavy series. This goes especially for a character like Gareth, who isn't interviewed quite as much as, say, David or Tim. It's easy to watch clips of him acting silly and conclude he must just be a crazy person, but many of his decisions become much more rational when viewed in the grand scheme of things. For instance, Gareth gets made fun of for throwing around meaningless titles a lot, but it's quite likely that David is the one who gave him most if not all of his titles in the first place. Gareth's mistake was to assume that they meant something (which Tim even points out explicitly in the second series). Along similar lines, Gareth is genuinely upset when David implies he'll be made redundant for two reasons. For one thing, David specifically promised that he wouldn't make anyone redundant (something the other staff note as well). Above and beyond that, Gareth is most likely afraid that if he loses this job, his dreams of success in the corporate world will come to nothing, especially since he has little in the way of an education. It's not about being a suck-up, in other words.
I love how Brent changes what he would say and glances to the 4th wall, because the camera-crew are part of the mockumentary, and he's trying to keep up his appearance all the time.
You have to work under someone like Gareth to understand .Gareth changes during the show into a power crazy career man with no understanding of tge staff needs underneath him.
He was iiin the T A no disrect to them but that's nothing like actually serving I a combat zone..nobody is actually trying to kill you or expecting you to kill. You go on lots of maneuvers but don't actually fight. Gareth goes on as if he served in the SAS in Helman province
The flaw in this is that they wouldn't have been able to give Gareth his job if they had made Brent redundant. Brent could have taken them to a tribunal.
Pretty sure Gareth mentioned that he has a different title because of the tribunal, so basically he’s doing Brent’s old job but officially it’s something else.
No, ignorance is thinking that they wanted to copy every aspect of the British version and assuming that the writers of the US version didn't know the US has a military. Dwight ran a farm and was a volunteer deputy. Being a military reserve didn't fit his character. They weren't the same character. Derp.
"It was the 40s before racism was bad". Classic.
Ive got a mate like Gareth. A short spell in the TA and goes on as if he was serving with the SAS in Afghanistan

Ever so good isn’t he

The what about us scene is one of my favourite British tv moments ever..
Fantastic finish the with sniper shot!
You know you’re too far down the Mackenzie Crook rabbit hole when you start developing a crush on Gareth

The sniper re-enactment is brilliant
Superb
Bloody good hole punch.
The title of this video is perfect
The fella that nicked my job…😂😂😂
The little lip bite during the song 😂
David Brent brought team individuality to the table. Gareth was more orthodox. Rules are there to be broken.
Brian Clough vs Roy Hodgson.

A truly Machiavellian rise. What a player.

This series was definitely a brilliant example of perfect comedy character acting.
Gervais isn't as fat as I remember him being in this show.

Fat by early 2000s standards but not as much by today's standards.
