I am a 76 year old retired plasterer and have done thousands of metres of dashing all over the country both on site and domestic work this is a good video your techniqe is good and your work is sound
Love the way pebble dash looks back in the day most houses had them right, now you dont really see alot, people like the brick look, Half bond mainly, but looks great lads, nice work
Nice job and harder work than it looks. Living in Sydney do not get a chance to do this that often. There is a fair bit of coke dashing to match in. Its really messy but less likely to stuff up.
Hi Paul Thanks for the kind comments and the advice. you are right you should ware gloves but they are uncomfertable to ware and hard to put on, how ever i am in the habit of using barrier cream when I use sand and cement and other cementonius products. thanks again Keith
Thanks Kirk, looks like i am going to have to do it few more times to. thanks for the good comment. You have some good videos out there, all the best Keith
I live in Brazil. I´ve seen that bricks and masonry work has been replaced by steel frame and drywall. So, I´m here watching videos to find out how homes are being built in europe and north america.
Cheers for this mate im having to patch up an area where im blocking up wall to make window instead of door and need to match the existing pebble dash. looks very simple!
Pebble dash gets a bad rap because it's out of fashion, but it's a lot more durable and crack-resistant than flat render. My mother's house was built in 1936 and the pebble dash is still sound.
Wow this is really cool and interesting .Been a solid plasterer for a long time and I’ve never seen this done before . Is that finished now ?. Do you have to put any bond Crete , or primer ?. I would love to know the process . Cheers from Down under .
A skilfully finished job, shame we can't say the same for the cameraman :-)? However what would be most helpful would be a range of videos showing exactly what is used, with the ratios and how to mix the different types of mortar? Rgds Ian
Your either laying it on to thin, laying on to larger are before you dash it,you should do it in sections or your not wetting down the scratch coat in warm weather
Great video a question our house which had already been pebble dashed when bought is 75mm about the paving slabs/ ground I'm not 100% on how render is dome in terms of dpc level but I know from being a brickie that the dpc level is usually 150mm above ground would u say they have covered the dpc level ? Or stabbed it above dpc? I've not yet looked to pull up.a slab to see if the dpc us there is not just wanted your opinion thanks
Difficult to say without seeing it have a look to see if its below any air bricks . Sometimes on older properties there a solid wall structure 3 bricks thick with no cavity or dpc. Obviously if dpc is breached then water could climb up the back of it and cause damp problems
U can get a step wire mesh bedded above doc or just a couple of tiling battens-screwed top of level with dpc render out in a concave Then render or dash over.....when fully dry, unscrew and remove. Shape batttens with bit of a slope or just stagger down.......just don't get too technical think how our fathers or grandfather coped....whilst smoking a woodbine and flat cap
@@johntaylor1359 there are tiles around perimeter. Whether these are meant to help I'm not sure likely or just fir decor. But theyre certainly not over 75mm high
Ive no idea why im here, but i watched it anyway. Have to agree, it looks terrible. Reminded me of a beach with all the pebbles. Should have just sealed the brickwork and then painted it. Much cleaner.
I'm not a builder so sorry for the stupid question but is the point of the scratch coat the help the butter coat stick? I'm having to repair some frost blown patches around my house. I'm not to worried about it not matching well as it's painted also.

Looked in wickes but only have gravel for garden borders.
Wow so beautiful

It certainly has its place and with some modern stone and a colour render behind it brings it up to date
Try to repair say after new window install etc, amd you'll soon know why. I owned a pebble dash in western Canada, 1sr house.

Does the pebbles attatched with cement and mortar only or there is any additves added.??????????

Great job,Poms seem to be the kings of Dashing.Do you ever have to press in with trowel?or is that apply the way to leave it.-thanks for sharing.
Why?
Good luck working that slow in summer dashing. Got to keep that wet edge!
going to try and render a wall, what length and width of trowel should i get, cheers
Good! 👍
Hi Kieth How do you keep the cement wet enough so the pebbles stick ? Every time I try the cement has been too dry to allow the pebble’s to stick ?
Your either laying it on to thin, laying on to larger are before you dash it,you should do it in sections or your not wetting down the scratch coat in warm weather
I'm in Canada. What kind of plaster is that? Like peanut butter? And the pebbles just stick? No pressing?
It's sand and cement render. It might have some lime and/or plasticiser/water-proofer chemical added to it.
nice job mate how much you charge to roughcast 200 sq ft ?
Excellent

Hi, what depth is the scratch coat and what depth is the render coat ?
depends 8mm to finish ect ect

Are the pebbles wet or rinsed before use, or just straight out of the bag?

thanks

very very good idea! but earth-blicks is helpful to us
Cant fault the lad but can't believe anybody would want pebble dash in this day and age it looks wank
My house is pebble dash exactly like this .
@Jimbo Slice Umm..does being mean make you feel good? :d
It is bloody horrible though

does it matter if its done in very cold weather?
I supposed to be at least 5 and rising if the frost gets to it could de-bond or have problems later
