Elvis Presley - "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" (1968/69) [HD]

- This scene is special in a way since it presents Elvis on stage accompanied by real musicians. Only very few of his movie performances featured real musicians. In fact the last one to do so was "Viva Las Vegas" five years earlier. And you'd have to go back seven years more to see him perform with Scotty Moore, Bill Black, DJ Fontana and The Jordanaires in 1957's "Loving You" and "Jailhouse Rock" respectively. In "Trouble With Girls" it's The Mellomen who act as "The Bible Singers", a part of the travelling Chautaqua troupe managed by Elvis-character Walter Hale. Elvis actually recorded a few times with the Mellomen during the 1960ies.
Apart from featuring real musicians this scene also has an almost documentary touch to it. Back in the 50ies before Elvis went to Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service "to make a record for my own use", as he told the audience in 1969, his dream was to join a Gospel Quartet. That's why he auditioned as bass [sic!] singer - and was rejected. The rest is history.
So, in a way this scene presents Elvis as the musician as which he probably saw himself before anything else: As singer among other singers, his voice interconnected with others. And what a great performance of a gospel classic, first recorded by him for his 1961 gospel album "His Hand in Mine" this is! - บันเทิง
As Quentin Tarrantino wrote for “True Romance” “a man can think Elvis is beautiful and not be gay”. He was a masterpiece!!!
Agreed and it's true
How true!
Until he started to get chunky
@@TheRTrizzy so what. At least he had a good prime. Some people never do.
@Jenny Rose yea but he ate himself tp death because of the enormous wealth that he didnt know what to do with
That man was born with rhythm flowing through his veins! 💖
Yep 😁
Oh,yes,I agree 💯%!❤❤❤So true.UNIQUE ELVIS!❤❤❤
You can see Elvis's love of gospel in this number. I've got a feeling he just kept going when the director tried to cut.
Also he always wanted part of a quartert so this must have been his dream scene
He puts a big grin on your face. Incredible talent, looks, soul. He puts his whole body into it.
Imagine; the only Grammy Elvis ever won was for his album of Gospel songs. I'm sure he's making God smile at this very moment.
Yes that was a big mistake! But we also have to remember that the Grammy award first was introduced in 1958 after some of his most creative years. He still got 3 Grammys; 1 for the 67 album How great thou art, 1 for the 71 album He Touched Me and 1 for the live performance in 74 of the song How great thou art. But in 70 he also got a liftime achivement Grammy award at the young age at 36 , that was amazing in itself.
Alan Falk Thanks for that. Good information I didn't know.
Something I was surprised to discover is that Elvis didn't make it overnight. It took a couple years of life on the road. I'd always thought he was an instant hit.
+Leon Davis
Yes it took a little while, but from what I have read he was a big hit in the south pretty fast, however he needed a bigger record label to break through in the whole contry. That is why , when he went from SUN records to RCA he had an instant nr 1 hit (Heartbreak Hotel ) with the very first single he released there.
Alan Falk I learned that from an interview given by the drummer...forgot his name...not really up on it that much. But when Elvis started out, he didn't have a drummer...just the upright base. As I recall, they traveled all over. Up into New York and into the midwest.
The breakthrough moment was during the first Sun session when Elvis cut loose with "That's Alright Mama" while he was fooling around during a break. The Colonel, like they say in the South "jumped on that like a chicken on a June bug".
+Leon Davis
"Jumped on that like a chicken on a June bug" LOL I have never heard that expression before.
The drummer was D.J.Fontana, he often said that when he was drumming for Elvis he immagined he was drumming for a stripper, meaning he had to underline Elvis' moves White his drumming.
By the way, if you are interested, ,then there are quite a few really great documentaries about Elvis' carreer on TH-cam. Just write "Elvis documentary " and then you will get around 20 different to chose among. I really like the one called "I sound like nobody" .
Critics gave him a hard time about his movies. We didn't care we LOVED this man.
Most talented ever.
I mean the movies were sht. Blame the studios for that move.
You are right. The critics just didn't get it. It was all about the man, not the screenplay.
The movies weren’t great, but Elvis was great in them.
Should release this clip again and let the millenniums see what a great singer sounds like.
Amen!🙌🙏❤❤❤
This guy was the entire package.
Looks, talent, swager, and humble guy.

Self inflicted early death. He should have taken his marriage and family a little more seriously.

A very stunning man and his voice was delectable!
Elvis had gospel music 🎶 flowing thru the blood in his veins straight into his kind loving heart.
The best entertainer & singer today & FOREVER!
ELVIS could sing anything with his amazing, incredible ,the only one VOICE, & GOSPEL is his favourite music.Love this song
Elvis got the best voice for me and everything in a package....I love him!
Love this,NOBODY can sing it like Elvis. Love you Elvis. Miss you being around.
Elvis truly had an amazing voice. He actually died 2 years before I was born but my Mom and uncle introduced me to him as a kid and I have been listening to him probably 35 years now...
The same here...and I will listen to Elvis for eternity!❤
I believe this is the happiest that I saw him on screen since Viva Las Vegas. You can clearly see that this is the music he LOVED to do. So much passion and soul in this. 1:38 is especially endearing.
ELVIS Presley was and still is the greatest entertainer, superb movie actor, brilliant stage performer of all time. Nobody does it better then him. Two Thumbs Ups! 😍😀☺️
I remember as a 10 year old sitting up in the middle of the night with my late dad watching the Elvis Aloah from Hawaii concert that was beamed around the world. Something I'll never forget & I'm in my 60's now and still as big a fan as I was growing up in the 60's. Only one Elvis, often imitated but never equalled & never will be...
Elvis sings this song with a musical group The Mellowmen. The deep, bass voice heard vocalizing is Thurl Ravenscroft, and the original voice of Tony the Tiger, the singer behind “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Ginch.” He was also the voice of Kirby the vacuum in “The Brave Little Toaster” and did a bunch of other voices for Disney. You can see him in the far right in shots of Elvis and the Bible group on stage.
Did not know all this cool stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful to see Elvis singing gospel songs
Elvis could sing anything...and make it his!! I have been to Graceland & will never forget it!! Still feel his presence ❤ Very spiritual and. God gave him his tremendous talent 🎼 He is still loved around the world and he will never be forgotten....🙏
You should come to Tupelo, Mississippi and visit his birthplace. In addition to the 2-room house where he was born, the actual Assembly of God church building where he went and learned to sing, dance and play guitar and piano is there. It's pretty powerful. And there are 3 statues of him. Two are him at 13 and are accurate to his size at that age. The detail of the clothes right down to the hole in his sock is fascinating. And finally the statue of him as a superstar on the stage in Vegas. This statue is larger than life and looks up to the heavens as he did so many times on stage. There are many other Elvis places to see. You would love it. ♥️
He seems totaly into it. Loves it.
Truly amazing at Gospel
I love all the Elvis movies, Because they immortalized him and are in good quality
This was amazing and his twitching and blinking reminds me a lot of his 50s performances. He was so beautiful especially here, late 60s is prime Elvis!
Great seeing the audience clap their hands as Elvis and thr Mellomen sang Swing Low Sweet Chariot.
He's amazing in this scene. Really amazing.
No one has come near having a voice like his, so pure and he sang with, such feeling.
😂
This man, oh boy...
Blessed are those who got to see him live.
My God, Elvis was the most beautiful man that ever lived. Thank you for these memories, Elvis. 🎼
Love It!!! This is what I want to see Elvis doing. What he loved. Not all the bs and lies that people keep making up to line their pockets with.
Tis Irish Bob saying hello
The fact that Elvis still earns income and followers long after his passing speaks volumes.
He was and will always be THE KING. Adored the world over, raw talent and range in song choices and performances.
Elvis is still the sauve, smooth, class act singer.Often Imitated by many but there will always and only be one legend Mr Elvis Presley.
Irish Bob looks forward to Heavens main stage to watch and enjoy the many great talents already there to welcome us home when our day comes along.

Man you can hear it in his voice...see it in his face...feel it in his clapping...Elvis LOVED this type of music! Raw talent. ♥️♾😎
Elvis is an alchemist, the original Rockstar, evangelist, country gospel rock'n'rroll and so much more!
And a kind and humble man who gave all the glory to Jesus Christ!
Fine Gospel singer, ballad singer and country singer. But NOT an original by any means and definitely not the only entertainer who could sing in various genres.
@@c.ostriker5572 Your ear/heart connection must be off a beat
@@erinmarie99 No, not at all. I simply don't put Elvis Presley on an unrealistic pedestal with rose colored lenses, while being able to appreciate his talent with a much more BALANCED view. He was good but in reality there were far too many other ARTISTS who actually wrote, sung, composed and contributed to producing their own music who had VERY exceptional voices.
Presley was a good singer but I've heard better and I will just leave it there.
We can agree to disagree.
Stay safe 🙏.
This is the music he wanted to sing. Music that made him happy.
QUAND ON VOIT ELVIS FRAPPER DANS SES MAINS TOUT EN RYTHMANT C'EST QUAND-MÊME UNIQUE AU MONDE PAREIL LORSQU'IL DANSE !.. MILLE ET UNE PENSÉES POUR SON ESPRIT MERCI POUR LA JOIE QU'IL TRANSCENDE ETERNELLEMENT 😇

Elvis Presley loves singing Gospel It brings him home to his roots.
As a young man, he loved Gospel music, especially the local celebrities the Blackwood Brothers. He couldn't afford to get in to their concerts, so bass singer JD Sumner would let him sneak in the back door. 15 years later, he went from teen idol to wannabe movie star (never made it) to Vegas superstar, and needed a Gospel quartet to back him up now that the Imperials left. So who you gonna call? JD Sumner, who was now managing and singing with The Stamps. Watch his Hawaii concert, and that's JD Sumner singing with Elvis Presley.
Love this song, and so did my dad God bless him!
This is so elegant, only Elvis ❤️❤️❤️
