The original 80's fender jazz bass specials are awesome, I own one, an 85, it plays great and feels really comfortable. I'm honestly not even a guns n' roses fan, and I don't play with a pick either. It's just a damn good bass. I'm curious how well these hold up to the originals, because I've heard mixed things about these signature models.
moshspeggeti I too have one of these basses. I'm not a g n r fan really but I saw one in a pawn shop about 12 years ago for $ 400 with a fender hard shell case, so I bought it. I'm not a bass player but I figured it's never too late. I'm okay now, and my knowledge of the guitar fingerboard kind of transfers over.
+wysiwyg248 LOL... you're fucking stupid. Duff used a pick, it's a signature. If you don't know what you're talking about, then shut the fuck up and listen, you might learn something.
I'm a little disappointed that the reviewer didn't mention the history of McKagan's bass essentially being based off of the 80's jazz special that Fender made, and not knowing the name of the finish. These are little things, but they really come through in a product demo. I don't even mind someone not playing Duff's licks or with a pick on this bass as that's what McKagan would do himself. Playing something else may interest non GNR and Velvet Revolver fans to check this bass out.
The bass was called Jazz Bass Special and it was Made in Japan during the 80's, the finish is polyurethane, Pearl White. Duff bought one of those with the cash GNR received in advance for the first record and Fender later on cashed in creating this version with the skull neck plate and SD pickup, making them in Mexico instead to maximize profit. I have one of these, the original one made in Japan. It was my first base, and I replaced the bridge with a Ken Smith. It sounds awesome with new Rotosound strings if you play rock or do covers.
It reminds me a lot of the Kramer Striker 700STB bass, but with better materials. The pickup switch is something I really dig with P/J basses, because concentric pots drive me crazy...I like 500K on P-basses, and 250K pots on J-basses, and don't like Blend controls. So the switch is a cool thing!
Thanks for the review man. Love that you have flats on it, I’m a fan of duff but I just need a good bass for a lot of things. Jazz concerts, school pep bands and even just for playing and recording. Thanks man
I actually realised after writing this that i was in fact going through an Orange AD200 and a 1x15OBC (You can see in the other MXR pedal video that we did that day) We shot another video coming out later this week using the AD200 and an 810!!!! (Orange gear rocks)
he actually does use his fingers when he plays live atm, saw a recording and he was using his fingers! pretty awesome, surprised you replyed actually :)
Just looked up a recording from their 16/17 tour, He still uses a pick. Its what he does, its how he gets his tone. Sure he'd sometimes use fingers, but that would be cause he dropped the pick, haha. He uses yellow dunlop picks, they get slippery when sweaty. Regardless, end of, hes predominantly a pick player, always has been, always will be.
Thanks for the demo but would be much better if the sound quality when the bass is sounding would be better. Being GAK maybe you could use other microphone to capture the bass rather than the one of the camera? Cheers
Hey. It has a little of all those things! You can just use the p pickup and get a chunky precision sound. You can just use the jazz pickup and get a poppy jazz sound. OR you can use both and get the real Duff sound.
Hey man something that might help you guys sell some guitars is using lemon oil on the rosewood fretboards. Other than that great review and can't wait to order mine
Barely a minute of playing, really doesn't show off what is a brilliant bit of kit. Most of this video was telling us what it looks like - we can see that already! Git to demo-ing! :D
the origonal was actually a Jazz Special, Jazz neck with a P body. duffs specific bass had a factory mistake on the neck thats why his signature is more unique than the regular Jazz Specials
theres no way in hell you can pick up a guns n' roses instrument and not lay down some classic riffs, i say do another video and fire it through a gallien krueger 2001 stack with a chorus and play some classic guns ;D also its based on an 80's jazz bass special according to duff and the fender website, even though this is marketed as a P bass haha

Nice bass of duff makagen!😆😆😆!
He needs to get a pick and dig into it.
+Mike Jones
Picking is for guitars and noses only.

Tell Paul McCartney that. He has ALWAYS used a pick. You must be new
Edward Walker John Paul Johns
wysiwyg248 dumbass
AMAZING BASS ! Keep up the great work!!!
Hands down the most beautiful bass ever.
Not even close
Love that tone.

I have an ‘85 of that model, black body, neck, and headstock, it’s beautiful
I was going through The Orange Bass Terror 1000w hooked up to the Orange OBC410. Really great amps!

It was 'Feather Witch: Errestas, Errestas' by 900 Spaces :)
Why would you play a Duff Signature bass with fingers.. if Duff is a renown pick player?
Because music is about freedom.
not to burst your bubble but duff actually does play with his fingers haha
dtp056 As any bassist I'd say he most definitely could, but all the albums he's been on, say appetite for example, were all played with a Pick.
he actually does use his fingers when he plays live atm, saw a recording and he was using his fingers! pretty awesome, surprised you replyed actually :)

based on the jazz special i believe, correct me if im wrong
Are you adding any effects to it? Or does it just sound that good.
It's just the bass. It does sound that good!
You guys ever going to do a review on the ESP LTD FB-204? I'd really like to see it be reviewed. Thanks!
Thanks for the demo but would be much better if the sound quality when the bass is sounding would be better. Being GAK maybe you could use other microphone to capture the bass rather than the one of the camera? Cheers
What about that special tone control that the bass is supposed to have?
Does Duff's bass have sound like normal precision or jazz bass? Or just that Duff sound?
Hey. It has a little of all those things! You can just use the p pickup and get a chunky precision sound. You can just use the jazz pickup and get a poppy jazz sound. OR you can use both and get the real Duff sound.
Duff needed to demonstrate his signature...with a GnR song.
What's the song called he plays at 1:53???
Did he just say McKagan wrong, the only person I’ve ever heard say it wrong ;(((!!
I f you are doing a review lets here some detail on the specs and and let us hear more of the bass you were tickling the thing !!!
How much money does it cost?
Hi Joe, seems a silly question how do you know so much about the bass? is it just experience or did you study at university?
BentheBassist 92 sit down in his room, turn on his laptop and googling it
@@bertsonder true dat
you have used drive?
Whats the cost of this bass.
Not even one song from appetite! Shame on you
That would cost $$$ or earn them a copyright strike.

active or passive?
Passive

It is Duff Mc KAYEGAN NOT KEGN
It's all by accent, it can be stated in many ways.
Sounds almost like Gibson TB
None of my Thunderbirds (I have a '76 Bicentenual model, a 1997 one and the 50th anniversary version) sounds anywhere near that
It is not jazz bass, its PJ boxer 555
The title says P bass and he says jazz bass.....but it is none of the 2, it's a P/J......
the origonal was actually a Jazz Special, Jazz neck with a P body. duffs specific bass had a factory mistake on the neck thats why his signature is more unique than the regular Jazz Specials
@@nebpenney8010 which factory mistake make his signature more unique than the Japan original PJ ??
He keeps saying mckagan wrong

The Steve Harris bass smokes every bit of it.
You look like you're going to try and sell me watches...
Duff is great but the bass
Worst demo
Not even a gnr song wow...
am i the only one who sees seymour duncans as nothing special at all?
yes
The bass of Maroyu's singer!
(A bolivian cumbia band)
Hes not even playing they are all miming
