    Finally someone who gets it! Thank you Professor Messer for your videos aimed at those of us who are struggling to even get noticed for an IT job interview. Your videos and channel are always very informative and filled with positive commentary, which goes a long ways for those of us who are feeling defeated every time we put in a resume. I just wanted to say thank you for this video, the information in it was very useful and will help me rebuild my resume. I am leaving a L O N G career in retail to change over to IT and at times I often catch myself saying "Whats the point". Your videos really help boost my morale and keep me going. Please keep up the great videos Sir!

    Point 1 reminded me of an issue I've been encountering when trying to get started in professional software development: Almost every "entry level" job listing has a requirement for 4-10 years of (non-college) experience in the exact field entering, and requirements for expert knowledge in a dozen tools that you would never use outside of that field.
    I've seen a few places saying that there's a systemic problem with software companies leading to the listing having "requirements" that far exceed the actual requirements laid out by whoever makes the actual hiring decisions. I've still been very reluctant to apply for such jobs.
    The only legitimate entry-level jobs are from a neighboring country -- one which requires you to pick up work permits in person even if you're going to work remotely. Travel restrictions make it impossible to pick up the permit.

    • @professormesser
      @professormesser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Someone's getting hired for these jobs, so they either have the experience listed in the job posting or they are being hired without the experience. If you feel that you're qualified, you should apply regardless.

    Question: If you don't want to put age race and stuff on the actual resume why do employers make questions like that mandatory when you fill out the next form before or after uploading the resume.

      @16ft2in 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This

    • @Techhead777
      @Techhead777 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the time they aren't mandatory but voluntary. Employers must comply with Government regulations to hire a certain number of people from an ethnic group. I have found by not voluntarily disclosing your race, sex, race etc can hurt you because it shows you could be hiding something. Logically if you don't disclose such information, and the employer decides to bring you in for an interview and finds you aren't the race they need to fill to comply with regulations then you've wasted yours and their time. I have actually been rejected through the application process and couldn't continue if I selected prefer not to answer. Every company has their algorithm with hiring. Also if the company doesn't ask for it, you don't want to call attention to it by putting it on your resume.

    Great info! So with regards to rejection #1, what kind of information would you put in if you want a job that doesn't align with your previous work experience? For example, I have a civil engineering background but I want to change career paths and work as a Network Engineer. How am I going to stand out among recruiters if I have zero experience in IT?

    • @professormesser

    Great video Professor Messer, however I do have a couple of questions. What should we do if we have our resume on LinkedIn and we've applied to various jobs that require a different customization of our resume? Would that be cause for concern if the employer were to find a difference on the LinkedIn version? I have experience in sales, management, and tech support, and I will apply to all of those roles if I match what the recruiter is looking for.

    Great advice. However, I don’t agree with adding the full home/mailing address. With the advent of google earth, maps etc. it’s very easy to see where someone lives right off the bat. It can potentially introduce another element of discrimination. Eg. the recruiter might have a bias against someone living in a certain neighbourhood, assume certain social economic standards of the applicant etc. One would hope that a recruiter doesn’t do that, but why chance it? It’s the same as putting age, race, gender, marital status etc. most job applications forms already indicate the location of the job or if it’s remote. So it’s assumed that since you are applying , you’re ok with the location. Besides, in the HR screening interview, it’s one of the first things the recruiter will ask.

    • @rpruneau68
      @rpruneau68 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He did state to add the city and state at a minimum, the rest would be personal preference. You would have to choose whether you determine you may get rejected more so from a personal bias on what neighborhood you reside or the possibly the ATS doesn't recognize complete information on your resume to process and store. Personally I would go with satisfying the latter.

    • @demejiuk5660
      @demejiuk5660 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have no idea why you would say that to someone you don't even know unless your ego was so sorely bruised. You really that fragile? Is that how you'd respond in the workplace? Or because you have the anonymity of hiding behind a username you think that's a good reason?
      It's not. This is a learning environment. There are no stupid questions and every input is designed to help someone. My suggestion to you is to delete your comment so we can keep this space a sane environment for people to learn and better their lives. • @professormesser

      Your resume is not your social media profile page. Adding a picture to a resume is not commonly acceptable, it creates potential issues with the application tracking system, and it can be much more of a detriment than any perceived advantage.
