I had a Mk2 that I thought was very nice but I was always envious of the interior of my friend’s Mk1. The older car felt more special, more unique and more futuristic inside and in retrospect I now think it’s the better looking outside too.

Recently bought a 2002 Mk 1 TT quattro 225hp for £1800. No rust, good interior, everything works, puts a smile on your face driving it. As you say, characterful car, unlike so many soulless boxes on the road now.

Just been to a VW/ Audi show today with a group of likeminded people. There’s not many mk1 TT’s. I would recommend going to some shows with it. The scene has some really great people, who have lots of knowledge about these cars. I’ve left today feeling awesome, and seen some really nice and also some rare motors.

Have to disagree. I went to Simply Audi at Beaulieu earlier this year, and the place was littered with Mk1 TT's. Even when there is a TT specific meet, Mk1's dominate, even more than Mk2's , which I'm sure there are a lot more of.

I drive a 2003 225bhp, TT quattro with 80k on the clock. Still does what I want, goes fast enough and still gets compliments ocean blue exterior with aviator gray interior. My wife and cruise all over New England… this little beast still gets 28-30mpg. Drive and enjoy the ride.

Another great video. The 2001 TT 1.8T 180 Quattro I picked up a few months back, after being reintrigued in the TT by your videos, has a lovely 6 speed box - so maybe the 5 speed isn't 'the one'.
I'm really enjoying my TT, it's a 5th car but does get used and it's a joy. I was lucky to get a really nice, full history example in 'Denim Blue' with a matching full leather demin blue interior for £1,200 ... How can they be this cheap?!

    • @itsjoel

I had a 225 BAM. It looked lovely but in this day and age it lacked poke for what you paid for it. Also strange considering its size how heavy it is. Typical Audi numb steering. Just wish it was made of aluminium like the MK2 as I still think it looks the best out of all its MK's.

Completely agree the MK1 TT is a fantastic car and every time I sat in mine I was always impressed with the quality and the style of it.
The beautiful purr of the 3.2 VR6 was heavenly (not so much when visiting the petrol pump) and shifted along with the DSG box. If it hadn’t been killed by some idiot driving into it I’d have kept it in storage as there really isn’t much else around with that package at that price point.

I believe the 1.8t suffers from sludge build up, due to lack of oil changes and rubber degradation - the PCV system gets blocked, prevents oil from getting to the top of the engine and bits start to go flying around the internals. Saab also suffered this problem from 98-03 with the 9-5 and 00-02 with the 9-3, which was widely publicised.. VW's issue went quietly under the radar.

Arguably you could say that about the MX-5, the Boxster and the Z4 though in fairness. I had a Mk2.5 MX-5, and had plenty of 'hairdressers car' comments. Replaced that with a Boxster S 3.2 (987) and get the same. Do I care? not one bit. They are fabulous cars, and the Porsche is definitely a mini 911 with most of the power at a £10k-15 saving!
As you say Joel, people's insecurities are your gain with the TT. It's a cracking bit of fun for let's be honest, really small money these days. Value is incredible in those.

disagree, i'd personally rather drive the TT than the Golf, it's less dull. Also, the 150 is probably the worst engine, not this 180!

    • @timprice5
      @timprice5 ปีที่แล้ว

Arguably it's the 2nd BEST engine! I would struggle to have the 3.2, as much as it sounds nice - it's a heavy front end and I believe it never came with a manual box in the VR6.
The 225 (well OK, the 240 in the QS) is probably the best engine, but the 180 isn't much of a consolation prize to be honest.

I owned a mk1 TT 225 a few years ago. I have to say I hated it. It was mediocre in every aspect. I’ve owned over 30 cars and this one stands out as the most loathed. It wasn’t quick. Engine gutless. Handled like a dog. It lasted 4 months before being sacked off.
To compare these with Boxsters or Z4’s is like comparing night and day. Totally different level. They are 1st and foremost drivers cars. Sure you can’t go to the tip with your garden rubbish in these. But that’s the job for the wife’s car😂
Anyway, enjoy the vids all the same.

I had a 986 Boxster S and Mk1 TT 225 at the same time. With a 240bhp remap and some poly bushes the TT was 85% as good as the Boxster but at 25% of the cost. It was also way better in the winter, despite the Porsche not being too bad in the snow at all.

@@jcg_Yamaha_CM in an ideal world you could have both! The 986 is undoubtedly a mid engine/rear drive proper drivers car. The TT though punches well above what its underpinnings would suggest. The modern take that it handles badly and is slow isn't backed up by either my experience or magazine road tests at the time.
