I am speechless....this yanks at my heart with such incredible longing and sadness...where Dmitri sings it with the anger and passion of youth, Riezen brings a nostalgic quality, almost a resignation, to this beautiful song.....amazing...
Sorry for the omission. The pianist, Vladimir Khvostin, made with Reizen the two LP set and TV program including these songs, as well as a 1975 LP of Tchaikovsky songs. He recorded with other famous artists including live jubiee of Zara Dolukhanova. I was told that unfortunately this talented artist died relatively young. I was unable so far to find more information about him.
A miracle! Heartstoppingly beautiful! One of the greatest artists ever, anywhere, at any age! The only thing his age brings is a deeply moving sensitivity that comes from experience, wisdom, and reflection - nothing that isn't beautiful. I'm overwhelmed. Thank you so much, Mr. Han. Can't stop watching this.
Absolutely beautiful, Reizen was a truly distinguished artist with total vocal control. No one today can come up to his level. This posting is very much appreciated. Thank you
This is marvelous on so many levels. A great artist singing late in his life but this is a splendid performance not a mere curio. I’ve watched it over and over and it moves and thrills me.
Thanks for the great comment, quite right an amazing performance for any age. I noticed anoung your playlists, the "complete" Khovanshchina 1959 film with Reizen. This online video is missing a scene, with Marfa, Susanna and Dosifei. I posted it here: th-cam.com/video/m3cXwig6nu4/w-d-xo.html
One can think of just a handful of bassos in our time that, at age 85, could sing this well. The legato, the breath control, the profound musicality, the soul that bReizen brings to this Rachmaninoff warhorse makes it so fresh that one would swear one's hearing this song for the first time!
Victor Han Indeed so, Victor! Among the few - very few - I can recall singing into their sixties (let alone their eighties!) there would be...Hans Hotter...Gottlob Frick...not very many...Jose van Dam retired not too long ago in...what...his late sixties? In any case, THANK YOU for sharing this with us!
Thank you very much, Victor for posting this magic belcanto and belartisto lesson by greatest classical vocalist of all time in my opinion. Hard to believe that 85-year-old bass could sing that romance way more colorful, expressive, romantic and passionate than 30-year-old Hvorostovsky. What a miracle he was!
Thank you Boris. Comparisons are not always useful. Reizen is in his own class next to the likes of Callas and Caruso and perhaps Schlusnus. The best of what the public sees today is what they see today.
You are not the first to ask about the pianist, and you are right - he deserves credit. Please see modified information, also comments of one year ago.
And he was not finished. He issued an album with Russian amd Ukrainian songs at 87, then came back on stage to sing Gremin for his 90th in 1985. (see video) He died of a very sudden stroke at age 97 in 1992.
I am reminded of the old saying spoken by a man of taste, on observing a pet walking only on his hind legs:"It is a miracle that he does it...but the real miracle is that he does it so well"!
Thank you very much for having posted this video clip to share it with us. Mark Reizen is unbelievable, and the pianissimo at the end is just fabulous. May I ask you to put your very good website up again? I regretted not having downloaded your entire website while it was there. It was a fantastic representation of Russian singing.
Mark Reizen died on November 25, 1992 in Moscow at age 97. He had a distinguished and very long career. This song was recorded for a TV show at age 85.
The lieder texts data base has translations from Russian to English and Spanish: I added the link in the video description I cannot reproduce it here because of copyright.. Have fun. It is a beautiful song.
one of the saddest performances you are ever going to see. the way Reizen depicts the meaning of the song is masterly, and it is a real shame there is not a translation here (I had to compare it with another version).
I am sorry, vhan2007 ! Could you change the tags and write Khvostin's name down as well in the performances you already posted? I know how important for a performance is a real good partner. People could find things with him also.
Einfach großartig und sehr berührend!

A life justified.

Me da esperanza, es posible cantar bien hasta la muerte. tengo 77 ahora y canto, todavía.. Mark es una maravilla.
Astonishing. Top F# at the end of a long phrase, without a breath.
From a bass.
Who's 85 years old.
Astonishing.
No end to this man's legend, a gleaming star in the sky of Opera.
Amazing; what a musician. And that at 85. Glorious!
This is a miracle before my ears!
85 ans? Chapeau !

Astounding, one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard by anybody of anything!

Thank you, Victor. I do love the Khovanshchina film! It is so difficult to find copies of it!
@@JefRoberts you noticed the link to the missing scene I posted for you

Achingly beautiful, to the final remarkable note.
Не поддаётся эпитетам и объяснению. Невероятно!
Indeed , nothing to add...for any age :-)

Wonderful singing.
Lo impresionante es que aun a esa edad tiene voz, no la misma de años anteriores, pero si la musicalidad y la intenciòn!.
Gracias por colgarlo.
Mark Reizen-Rachmanino is fantastik
grazie vhan, molto gentile.
Stupendous singing!Bravo.
Amazing! Wonderful voice, wonderful technique, wonderful interpretative intentions!

Unbelievable! Kudos and bravos!
Many basses never can sing F# , with breath... :-)
Amazing.
grazie a lei!
Outstanding singing of the highest order! 85?

I know how important for a performance is a real good partner.

One of his major teachers was Italian - surprise, surprise.
