We're glad we were able to help you out with the connectors, and we enjoyed hanging out with you and the guys for a few minutes. Sorry to hear about the injury and hopefully the recovery will be a quick one. Welcome to the Datsun community! You'll find that the old Datsuns are nimble and fun to drive. Enjoy!
Talk about stirring up old memories. I was stationed in Charleston in 1972 Since my Malibu SS in CA, I ended up getting a Datsun 510 for transportation. Basic 2 door, L16, 4 speed, and not much else. I drug that thing around over the years... Charleston, Rota Spain, California, Hawaii, and back to SoCal before finally traiding it in on a 1977 Datsun 620 pickup, with an L20 and a 4 speed. Trashed the 4 speed, and upgraded it to a 5 speed. Good memories with both of them.
Love this episode, it has that strong OG Roadkill feel. Mike you have always been the driving force of that show from day one. Wish you would do more like this one!!Mad❤ and respect Bro!!!🤟😎👍💯💯💯💯💯
The older the car - the more latitude you'll get. You know it's real bad when they are bringing you free hot dogs, coffees and drinks. Ask me how I know 😂
Brings back memories. My first car was a 1978 510 with a 1980 grille and headlights. 2L engine out of an 83 240Z with dual Weber sidedrafts. Went like a bat out of hell! Brock rally edition red/white/blue paint and 50 series tires all around, cornered like a rock! Would give a body part or 2 to have that car back again!
I used to have a 1980 Datsun pickup in high school. It had a 280z motor and trans swapped in it from a wrecked 280. I had a blast in that pick up. I ended up totaling it hitting a deer coming home from work in the middle of the night after I painted it. The deer wouldn't have totaled it if I had the front bumper on the truck. I had just painted it black with two mustard yellow stripes still had tape on the mirrors. I was going to put the truck back together the next morning at home. I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I'm 40 years old now and I still think about that truck often. I've always wanted a 510 to go with that truck in the driveway. Maybe some day. Congrats! The car is beautiful!
I had a workmate who owned a 70's 510. She had it all tricked out and was an SCCA racer. It was her daily driver too. She had a lead foot for sure. LOL. I knew folks who had down draft dual Hollies on those cars . They liked them better then the side drafts. The Datsun side draft carbs were notoriously cold-blooded on start-up. I had a 72 240Z and those carbs were tuned and they still had cold start issues. Get the Hollies for better running overall. Get well soon Board Runner. Hope it heals fast.
When we had Raver Motorsports, my old partner Vern Brunges had THE recipe for a killer L23 using all stock parts. We tore apart so many VG30Es to get the connecting rods out of them. I could still tear one down in my sleep...lol.
Correction Mike. The 55 mph speed limit started in 1974, the year I got my license. Major bummer. I had a year of a restricted permit to know was I was missing, and plenty of speeding tickets, because I didn't like it.
Sweet ride my dad had this exact Datsun when I was a child so many memories ,I would have probably paid a whole lot more then 12 k because they’re so rare and the emotion connection I have for these cars cool car great content 🫡💯
My first car at 16 was a 1971 510. It was given to me by a friend of my older brother. Being a northers car, it was full of rust! I wrenched on that car a ton and learned a lot. It looked like crap, but was fun the drive.
My best friends first ride was a mid 70s 210 it was brornge in color brown/orange and had dimpled hubcaps and we had an absolute blast rallying that thing. He got it from his grandparents and his grandpa had some crazy carb setup on it and it got like 40mpg and in the mid 90s he'd fill it for like 10$ and drive forever
I soooo miss my 510's!!!! they were such a blast to drive the curvy mountain roads! oh! and comfortable with velvety caddy like seats squished in her! lol & Summit Point great memories!
Well, it's about time you bought a cool car!!! Now all you need is a 2 litre twin cam with ITBs, 6 speed manual, slightly upgraded suspension and brakes. Making around 300hp and it would be PERFECT 👍.
You have a Datsun pickup shift lever in that 510. Find a 200SX lever which is shorter, and curves back and towards the driver. Also, you need ~1" spacers between the trans mount and the body to keep the trans from hitting the tunnel.
WATER BOTTLE FIX---Bought an 04 Ram w/5.9 Cummins did not have an overflow for the coolent.. put a rubber hose to a thick water bottle and it's worked for over a year!😂
@@FinnegansGarage the “why didn’t it blow a fuse?” Isn’t a 510 thing it’s a Datsun thing, my roadster has the fuse block with a burnt hole. Get a new fuse block with newer fuses and redo it. I’ve rewired 1/2 my car to melted plugs. Hope this helps
Hey Mike! Everytime I see one of those Nissan L series engines, it reminds me of my Mum's 910 Bluebird. It was an '83, built here in Australia with an L20B and a 5 speed. She drove it from '92 until 2002 but only because the back window was gonna rust out. My sister learned to drive in it and I got to start it up a few times. I had to learn in the 1991 Corolla that replaced it.
appreciate you bringing light to the fact that not all old hot rods are from the big 3. I love my classic american cars but I also have a soft spot for olds toyotas and datsuns.
I would say a big shout out to Jason for being a great car guy is due ! Thanks Jason. Mike try to pay attention when carving and good news about your leg and I hope everyone else had fun and now can we please get back to building ProMod Street cars, thank you and good luck.
Epic. Glad you got to bring your kid along. Mostly so he could learn the ways of the Roadkill. I did a similar thing with my dad as a teenager. When on winter vacation in California visiting relatives, we were on the beach one day and rented a car the next day, and drove to the mountains and skied. There was a decent snow storm on the way up. The authorities tried to turn us away because we didn't have snow chains. My dad replied, "we're from Michigan and this is nothing". Somehow, pre-GPS, we found our way around the roadblock and had an awesome day on the slopes. I will never forget that day!
In the early 80s I had a 510 station wagon with a 4speed, cam, headers, carb and a glass back. The body was seven different colours, and had rust and lots of body damage, but the motor ran great, and I had tall good winter tires, it was my winter beater and ski machine, when I lived in Canada. We made a wooden box on the roof, just screwed it on to the roof, for the skis, and with the extra space of the station wagon four of us could load up our gear and go skiing. When the roads got really bad, I had a full set of chains. It was a great driving winter beater, it was fun to drive and I hated selling it. BTW, I’ve broken both fibulas skiing. Cheers from Tokyo
I don’t know if you’ve seen this… 1157 bulbs can be forced in backwards which switches bright/dim around. Also 1156 bulbs (with only one contact on the bottom) can be forced in too and short the brake and tail and marker lights all together. Easy to check.
Never owned a 510, but have been in, driven and helped workon dozens, plus all the rally cars here in Australia. Quick point, the L20 was the OHC inline 6 cyl which won't fit in a 510, the L20B from the 710 and 910, and 620 and 720 pickups, do. A little trick I was told when I had my 720KC, with L18, was to use the pickup's split exhaust manifold, gives you 4-2-1 headers with nice long primaries.
The click click starting issue is a ground problem with the factory harness. The starter solenoid is not seeing enough voltage to trigger. The only true way to fix it is to build a new harness. It's probably possible to chase down the gang clamped grounds in the harness and repair them but it's as much work as building a new one. Simple fix is to mount a Ford solenoid on the firewall as they will trigger at 9v.
Boy , that little car brought back memories of my youth, especialy the touchy ignition switch. Driving my girl friend's 510 once I had to fiddle with the key more than usual one time, a couple blocks down the road I noticed the key said Yamaha on it. I put my bike key in it by mistake and it worked.
Hey Mike. Long time Datsun 510, 240z and 1200 owner and Rcaer here. Regarding the Side Marker light. Thye have bullet connectors for the Positive and Nnegative side of the Circuit. But the Bulb Negative side is also grounded to the Metal Housing of the Lamp. On a rewire you can get the Positive and Negative wire connectors backwards. That will give a direct short. Doesn't always happen right away, as the ground through the Lamp body is not always 100%. But hit a bump or Railwya tracks.. and the Magic Smoke gets out. These cars also have a weird issue with feedback through the Brake Lights. They take 1156 and 1157 bulbs. Get them mixed up and they will feedback the Tail light circuits.
I broke my fibula the same way during my first deployment, it was diagnosed as "high ankle sprain" (no, the PA didn't order x-rays) I NEVER got it wrapped or even crutches, it was quite painful to walk on for the first 3 weeks. I didn't actually find out it had broken until 5 years later during my exit physical The big bummer, I was getting into cross-country running, after the break (which did NOT fully heal) I no longer have the stability to take on un-even terrain Glad yours was diagnosed and does NOT need surgery!
Sorry about I-26 coming into Aville it still sucks ... back in the day before snowboards we rode Snurfers .. took them to Beech and Sugar Mt -- got kicked off
I had a Datsun B210 back in the day. I found a 1981 710 pickup with 2400 ORIGINAL miles but it sat and rusted so im restoring it. I also purchased a 97 Suzuki Carry with a dump bed that I use around the property and to plow snow.
That little thing brings back so many memories. I bought a 1970 510 in 1976. It was a blast to drive. My friends and I would pile in to go hunting in Winter. When we'd get stuck we'd just either push it or lift it out of the hole. Mine had the 1600. Just one of the many cars I wish I still had.
Mike, dude ! .... Broke leg a' walkin' ! .... well anything to get the "Proud Dad's" shot ! A family from church had an older jeep and knew my family needed help with a vehicle.... it lit up under the dash whilst driving down a fairly busy 2 lane road ... so while pulling over onto the shoulder I was grabbing the wiring and trying to smother it with my "drywall hanger" toughened hand and by the grace of God it melted one of the wires through..... whew ..... super props to all the helpers in this one !
I checked out a B210 "Honey Bee" back in the 70's and the air rush through the carburator was louder than the exhaust. When I punched it in 1st gear it felt like it was going backwards.I bought a '74 Celica GT 18RC and I loved that thing. I drove the wheels off it.
WOW, and I thought I was having a bit of bad luck. Must admit I did think you were hogging that fuel pump but with no one about, except you Knight in Shining Armour I suppose it was fine. I am a great believer in doing good by others will help you in your Hour of need. Well with a bit of luck anyway 🙂Hope you heal quickly, good to see you all enjoying the Snow.
You took me back to my youth with this one man. A bunch of us piling into lowered Datsuns and Volkswagens going to the mountains and getting hurt. This is one of my all time favorites. Cheers.
John Morton is the guy that drove, total dominance in 71 and 72, I've owned my 71 2dr sense 1986. Put 140k miles on it. Love the car, collecting parts for an all aluminum V-8 (Olds 215, worked to 266 inch). Lighter than any other swap engine, and a V8 sound track. Plenty of haters for this swap, but I'm the second owner and it is my first car, 38years of love!! Congrats!! Great cars! Have super fun!!!!
As a long time Datsun 510 owner, I can safely say that is a nice one! But, that truck shifter is garbage!! We used to run the shortest ones possible, or just shorten and thread them for the knob. The harness can be a real Jekyll and Hyde deal, if they are uncut, they will last forever, but, once tampered with, they can be a nightmare! I currently own a '72 two door with a Nissan Xterra VG33E V6 and a 300ZX 5 Speed. Almost out of the garage. But those L-18 engines are hard to beat! They will run forever with the proper care. Congrats and Welcome to the 510 Cult!
FUCK YESSSSS! FINNEGAN is a 510 guy! I love it. I'm rebuilding one right now. 69 2 door. Bump it up to an l20b, put the adjustable camber kit for the rear in it. Zx brake upgrade up front. Rock that shit. Fun, fun, fun cars!
I have pretty much converted to the M12 and M18 stuff for our tools. The 1400 impact is more powerful than all my air stuff, almost combined. Love the Milwaukee AND your 510. Thanks for sharing Mike.
Grew up racing Datsun 510s in SCCA in AK. Such a great car and love the episode! Some racer friends pulled the 2.7 inline 6 out of a 280z, notched the firewall in a 510 back like 12 inches and installed the inline size. Insane little righ. Wish you could get hold of them these days would love one as a project car!
I paid 2000 for a new 510 in May 1970 while in the Navy. It vacationed at Bob Sharp Datsun in Ct. Trans upgrade, better springs and alignment. Yowser this baby honked. It has a world class greenhouse. Hitting a gator is like hitting a tree the same size. Ask me how i know...
I learned to drive with ‘76 620 pickup and experienced everything you did will owning it. Electrical issues were common with the Datsuns of that era. Those old wire harnesses had fuse links that burned out all the time. Great memories. It had the Webber 2 barrel carb, Thrush exhaust header, and exhaust. It would burn rubber in all 4 gears. Wish I still had it. It got t-boned by a ‘86 GMC Jimmy. The little truck saved my life. 😢 A buddy of mine had a ‘74 B510. Ah, the memories. 😊
About 15 years ago a friend of mine blew his knee out on that same upper loop around on Sugar Mountain and had to walk the whole way down as well. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
That is a factory wiring loom that has been hacked and put back together. All just to relocate the battery. All the wire colours, relays, and plugs are still factory Datsun. Though the fuse box has been updated.
I had a 79 B510 hatchback with a push button and toggle switch to start the car, no key or ignition switch. It ran for 35,000 miles with the cobbled electric system. till one day the whole underneath of the dash board caught fire. I bought it for 75.00 for Weird Wally's in Lincoln NE in the late 80,s was a great beater for a couple years. It was a mustard yellow under years of rust and road grime.
In the day Datsun Violet, as was known in UK, was driven in rallies, well. Lookup East Africa Rally. The preferred version was the 4 door, the body that bit less floppy than the 2 door. But these were nicely balanced cars. As long as it didn't rust in the warranty period. The construction quality was very good, just paint technologies not being to the same standard in the day.
We call them Datsun 1600 in Australia but we never got the 2 door ones unfortunately, a few mates had them, most were rally cars with the L18 or L20, those gearboxes were call option one boxes great for rally as you go from 2nd to 3rd so much and it’s super easy, and never really had to go back to 1st. I was driving my mates turbo L18 one and watched the speedo go past the 120.
My 2nd car back in the early 80's in high school was a baby blue 510. Had a lot of fun with it! My older brother had a 70 510 with dual sidedrafts, then sold it for a 2000 Roadster. A few years later I bought a 75 280Z in candy apple red and a 2000 Roadster. Miss them all!
My first car was a 510 back in 87. Dual side drafts , ported and polished head, flared rear fenders , stainless interior ( I think it was an ex track day car) It was so much fun to drive, much like a go cart. I started sliding it around thinking I was a race car driver and curb shot it , after only 3 days. Im still pissed at my younger self . Would love to have that car now
I had a 510 Station Wagon that I used when I owned my own business. That thing paid for itself very quickly. It was incredibly reliable and fun to drive.
What dude would not be jealous of a day in the life of Finnegan. Even breaks a leg and has a great time!! Thanks for sharing y'all's talents and adventures!! You should name the car "break a leg".
1974 is when they lowered the speed limit to the double nickel....I remember it well, as I was just starting to drive. Good luck and have fun with the 510 !
Had a '79 280 ZX 2+2 LOVED it babyed it, but NY winters got the best of it and one year when the car was getting the state inspection a few minutes after they put it on the lift I could hear metal cracking and the floor let go and the right side of the lift disappeared into the car
My first car was a 1969 510, pale yellow, bone stock except for a set of American Racing alu slots. Bought in 1976 for $700 of summer job money, which was a couple of summers back then. All my muscle car mad friends though I was crazy.
The 510 is awesome, always wanted one. I wanted to point out the evolution of the Roadkill videos. In the early days there would have been flashlights taped to the hood (if it still had a hood in place). Now they totally legit fix the wiring, diagnosed and repaired to a point that it can be safely driven, easily fixed fully later on. Kudos.
Stock went up for sure with the snowboard skills… it’s funny being from New England it always blows my mind that mountains exist down south… I heard you Wakesurf too and have a solid boat.. be a lot cooler if you ditch the Wakesurf board and wakeboard 🤘🏽

You legend! Beautiful datsun dude!
Thanks!
Have a white 1969. I'd love to say as nice as yours!!
A Z260 is nimble??
LoL
Peace!
Wish I had B210 back
Beautiful 1600!
Pro-Tip: Use a Gatorade bottle for the puke/recovery bottle. The ribs in the bottle help it not slip out of the zip-tie. 0:03
plus it can take a bit higher temp then the flimsy water bottle
I like Vermont maple syrup bottles - the little.jug handle is great for a zip tie 😂
For years he will hear” turn off the car, Jordan!” Lol. Glad everything worked out. Cool car.

Jordan with the reflexes of a jet lagged sloth there! 😅 "Turn off the car Jordan!" and "Open the trunk Jordan!" 😋
37:33 in the dump trucks defense, you completely ignored that there was indeed an entire right lane for turning you chose to ignore 😆😆
yeah i didnt even notice the turning lane until it was too late.
I would have cut that part out. Whoever edited this did him dirty lol.

I am shocked the people at the gas station didn’t give you a bunch of grief about turning their pumps into a repair shop. Good on them.
Yeah I was surprised no-one came out to ask what they were doing. Didn't look busy though.

I broke my fibula the same way during my first deployment, it was diagnosed as "high ankle sprain" (no, the PA didn't order x-rays)
I NEVER got it wrapped or even crutches, it was quite painful to walk on for the first 3 weeks.
I didn't actually find out it had broken until 5 years later during my exit physical
The big bummer, I was getting into cross-country running, after the break (which did NOT fully heal) I no longer have the stability to take on un-even terrain
Glad yours was diagnosed and does NOT need surgery!
Love my old datto's had a 120Y 2door wagon, 1600, 200b paddock bashers. Use to buy them for $200 20 years ago. Now they are worth a mint
From the UK, small 4 cylinders are the norm....that sounds just right fellas
Nice pick up. John Morton was BRE's driver. A legend in his own right.
I think Paul Newman raced one as well. Another INCREDIBLE car from this time is the 1973-75 Toyota Celica!!! Same thing and THEY LOOK GREAT!!
It’s the quintessential British engine swap.
Congrats and Welcome to the 510 Cult!
awwww... sorry bout your leg man!! looked like a great trip though... except for rewiring an engine.
I had a Datsun 510 back in 1980. Loved that car.
Welcome to the 510 brotherhood!
A buddy of mine had a ‘74 B510. Ah, the memories. 😊
I love that you were totally unfazed by removing and repairing an entire wiring loom on the ground in the middle of the night, miles from anywhere.
Cool car. Cool kid. Good buddy with a road trip and time with your kid.
In 1989 I had a 1972 Datsun 1200. Little car got incredible mileage.
Buddy of mine had a 510 4 door grey car dual carbs with an automatic still fun to drive
Datsuns, road trip, roadkilled, snowboarding, injuries, ski patrol, doctor shenanigans. I loved every minute of this. Feels like home. #unclefinnegan
Props to y’all for fixing that electrical issue in a parking lot! Helpful car people are the best! Heal soon.
Busted his leg and took it like a champ. My man MIKE! Glad the Dotsun worked out pretty good on the way home.
In the day Datsun Violet, as was known in UK, was driven in rallies, well. Lookup East Africa Rally. The preferred version was the 4 door, the body that bit less floppy than the 2 door. But these were nicely balanced cars. As long as it didn't rust in the warranty period. The construction quality was very good, just paint technologies not being to the same standard in the day.
my old man had a '78 Datsun 510 wagon, with the 5 sp., used to love driving that thing, especially when a lil snow on the roads
I love BMW 2002s, but Datsun 510's are definitely more my style. Great buy Finnegan!.
I was driving my mates turbo L18 one and watched the speedo go past the 120.
lol those cars always melt the headlight wiring, headlights are permanent hot and grounded by the switch at full amps!
It only caught on fire once. Best day at work ever!
We have Bear World in Idaho. Some cool animals like an Albino Elk.
Yup... gettin' old sucks! Sorry about your leg. Glad you're gonna make a full recovery. And, I really miss snowboarding. 😢
I have had a few 510 in my life. I only have one now.
Great fun cars!!! Welcome to the community . 21:02
Would love to have that car now
I had a '72 240Z. Miss it, Mike! It had good leg room, but yeah, kind of tight side to side. Love that 510!
Totally enjoy the kids are recording for you haha freeish labor
I had a 510 Station Wagon that I used when I owned my own business. That thing paid for itself very quickly. It was incredibly reliable and fun to drive.
What dude would not be jealous of a day in the life of Finnegan. Even breaks a leg and has a great time!!
Thanks for sharing y'all's talents and adventures!!
You should name the car "break a leg".
1974 is when they lowered the speed limit to the double nickel....I remember it well, as I was just starting to drive. Good luck and have fun with the 510 !
Had a '79 280 ZX 2+2
LOVED it babyed it, but NY winters got the best of it and one year when the car was getting the state inspection a few minutes after they put it on the lift I could hear metal cracking and the floor let go and the right side of the lift disappeared into the car
Your wife is so cool ! Every gearhead needs a woman like her ! She’s the BOMB !
You own a yellow firebird
My favorite car if any of the others on the channel!!! I love everything about the Datsun!!!
My first car was a 1969 510, pale yellow, bone stock except for a set of American Racing alu slots. Bought in 1976 for $700 of summer job money, which was a couple of summers back then. All my muscle car mad friends though I was crazy.
My big brother had a Datsun pickup. Ran ok, ratled terrible and was one of the most fun vehicles ever.
Kudos.
Tune in later for more adventures with "crash and smoke"
I'm not really a datsun fan but, I do have a soft spot for those fairlady ragtops.
Stock went up for sure with the snowboard skills… it’s funny being from New England it always blows my mind that mountains exist down south… I heard you Wakesurf too and have a solid boat.. be a lot cooler if you ditch the Wakesurf board and wakeboard 🤘🏽
