    EMC. You make some good points about drumming. But you have to remember when you watch a TV show, you are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. They gave us 1 week to shoot the band portion of the show. The producers wanted it to really push Tommy and it did. He really did spend lots of extra time getting help (in the evening) so he could be on the field. I say, "get to be on the field" because it is a privilege to get to perform with the Cornhusker Marching Band. That is not something the staff and faculty take lightly. Nor did the members of the drumline. Ben expressed a feeling that was widely held by the drumline members and Ben is one of the most real/sincere people I have ever known. There was a very real chance Tommy would not perform during that halftime. He had to earn it. As to your point about equipment. We didn't have a new matching set of drums for Tommy to use. We learned about the project well into our season and did what we could. Remember, the whole set-up for the show was for Tommy to be "fish out of water". Putting him into unfamiliar situations and letting things happen. We never had to "redo" anything. They took video as things happened in rehearsal/performance and then edited to what the viewers saw. Nothing was scripted. Was an interesting experience for sure. And yes, we very often put an entire halftime show together in a week. Doug Bush Assistant Director of Bands, University of Nebraska.

      Thanks for your comment and that's interesting as it's really not how most reality TV is shot. Here the basic plot was contrived but the rest sounds like they filmed what happened and it was dramatic enough in its own right.

      I don't doubt that this is true. Look when does not become a drummer of one of the most successful rock bands of their time without being very hardworking, tenacious, and determined. You don't make it to that level without being very serious about the instrument you play. He had to go through hell just to make it to where he's at. There may not be a whole lot but he takes seriously but when it comes to his drumming I'm sure he takes that very very seriously. One can be a drunk, skirt-chasing, drug using hard rock drummer and at the same time be very hardworking determined and dedicated to their instrument that they play. They don't make it to the top without having those attributes.

    To be fair, marching percussion has greatly enhanced my ability to play drum set better. Started out on kit and was decent, but when I came into DCI/WGI that changed my way of thinking and made me much more advanced. I’m also grateful for the fact that I got put into the front ensemble when I went to high school. I used to avoid middle school xylophone like the plague. But because of pit, I played piano literature out of my league like Debussy.

    3:28 No that is ACTUALLY the real time the CMB (Cornhusker Marching Band) rehearses.
    We would rehearse everyday M-F from 7:00 AM to 8:20 AM in the stadium, and then Drumline shows up at 6:30 AM for their daily warm-up. If the weather is terrible, we then move rehearsal up to 7:30 AM to give time to move stuff to the indoor field, which is usually the university rec center field.
    Then on Thursdays or Wednesdays, the whole band shows up at 6:30 AM to meet with their section leadership for memorization checks on the show music.
    And then for home football games, the band meets 5.5 hours before kickoff to do a dress rehearsal, split into pep bands for pep rallies, pre-game concert and then march down to the stadium.

We get up and head to the stadium by 6:30 am, sometimes the drumlin is there at 6:00. We also learn a whole new show for every home game and as usual the visitors fight songs. Even though we might go through all of this, we are all so honored and happy to be a part of this marching band. Love what your doing on your channel, and super glad you did a react to this video!!

    wow, my highschool only had trips, so your worried about Tommy not having the 5th an 6th tiny drums we only had 3 tops. Funny enough the guy that played the trips in my HS his last name was very similar sounding so his nickname was Mark Trippsly. He was a really great guy, he helped me out a TON, backed me up against some bullying issues I had, him already being this 6 foot+ 200+ pound monster of muscles and drum skill was helpful in that. He was a mentor and a great friend. I wish we all kept in touch but me having undiagnosed ADHD and autism didn't help and today I have zero contacts from HS, or from ITT, or from the two universities I attended, or work, or... ok, I don't have any friends, but I can still play the drums.

    I actually challenge the idea that drum set and marching band are two different worlds. When I was in high school I had an instructor who explained that the goal of the drum line was to sound like one person on a drum kit. That inspired me to apply marching approaches to drum set playing.
    In fact, the song featured in those clips, Malagueña, we played in my high school and I adapted the drum line score to drum set. So, I think there are parallels for sure.

    • @ItsABOUTflamTIME
      @ItsABOUTflamTIME ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's more the other way around. The drum set was invented so that one person could play the role of an entire percussion section. And of course there are similarities between drumset and marching band, but I do agree that they really are two different worlds.

    • @OdaKa
      @OdaKa ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They really are different. It's one thing to improvise your own thing, totally different to come from one world and skillfully play the repetoire of the other. They're related, obviously, but they're as different as classical sax, jazz sax, and rock sax

    • @BobbySacamano
      @BobbySacamano ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Parallels, yes. As in completely different shit happens in parallel universes ;)

    March music is a genre with its own qualities. The same can be said if you set a marching drummer to sit in on a jazz band. Some may know how to transition if they took that option back in school. But, most likely a march drummer will never be able to feel comfortable in a jazz session.
    Just enjoy the entertainment value of a rock drummer wanting to explore a genre outside of his world and commend him for at least giving it a try. Hopefully, as a result, other rock drummers may be inspired while they are in school to want to participate in a marching band because of Tommy's exposing them to the idea that it is ok to explore outside of your musical genre.

    • @onewildandcrazyguy9213

      Many rock drummers can play a lot of styles of music. Tommy Lee played drums and marching band in high school. He wouldn't have been able to play that well after a week without that sort of background. He had taken me years off of marching band before he did this show. Well the other people in the marching band had been playing continuously for years before they were on the college marching band. When I was in college, we had marching band M-W-F from 7:30-9 AM then Tuesday evenings. So, starting as the @$$hole of dawn is not that unusual.

    5:29 Lol, members probably were enjoying it unless directors were being obnoxious. I can't speak for the drumline culture at every large university drumlines, but obviously, while they all strive for excellence, most members value having a good time over being good. Inverse of DCI and WGI that respect. Rather than it being it's fun to be good, you're good if you're fun.
    Always finding that balance between having a whole lotta fun and not letting it prevent you from being clean. It's not too hard if the culture is good, but there's definetely more bands without that balance than there are with it, whether that be they mess around too much to be clean or they're just too serious.

    Reality is wheb instructor Ben heard Tommy was going to do a reality show with them he orobsbly sh*t himself. But acted unimpressed for the drama of TV. Takes weeks and months to get ready for a show, not a few days.
    Pitch tuning for quads way higher than set.
    Malaguena arrangement best of old school drum corps.
    He did a good job for a several days of prep.
    Seems like he really applied himself. Not sure many rockstar impressario's would subject themselves to that.
    They def should have let him solo in the pit to feature him for a song. He is a legend after all.
    I see why they did it that way to provide TV drama, but ultimately that's no way to treat a rock superstar.

    I'm a drumset player who learned how to play in a marching band. I fall on both sides of the spectrum. I have pretty good marching chops and technique, but I can also play drumset very well.

    This isn't rocket science and I can respect differences of opinion except on this one. For somebody who hasn't played in marching band for decades to come into a great college marching band and after a week is able to keep up even for a short time at a college football game is a remarkable feat.

    It’s the fact that all the things you said don’t happen in drum line was literally my high school experience. Cymbals at the start of band camp freshman year. Bass drum halfway through. Quints sophomore year with no experience and recreating and writing out all the cadences cuz I wasn’t taught and there was no sheet music. Literally a “Here’s your instrument. Figure it out and do it perfect the first time around. 🙂” Time of my life though. Four years later and I still yearn to go back to ‘18 😩
    Also forgot to mention that we got to school at 5:30am for practice. And had another practice from 3:30 to 6:30pm after school 🫠 so 7am sounds generous af to me

    When I was in Drum Line 1977 to 1981, we played Tri-Toms. For a high school we had a huge band and drum line. Over 200 total in the band and 17 in drum line. Today the “tenor” drums play more complex rhythms, but to me it is boring to listen to.
