A beautiful song, personally I consider it to be his best. I tear up when I hear it, remembering the family and friends, the simpler times & the love I lost (but not she's not forgotten) in the late 70s.
Going through divorce more than a decade ago I was listening to this song. Every sentence in the lyrics of this song hit me hard at that time. I’m glad I went thru that hell and am in a happy second mariage. Sedaka is a prolific and genuine composer.
I remember this song from the final minutes of the Legendary 208, Radio Luxembourg. When DJ Mike Hollis spoke the final words...
"It kind'a says it all.... allright everybody, time to say goodbye Luxembourg"...
. What an epic moment and a fitting song to be the penultimate in the history of the great 208. I still get chills when I put on the tape and listen to the final broadcast ... this song, and the very last one, being Marion Montgomery's "Maybe The Morning" from '72 is forever etched into my brain... a sad moment in history, but what a moment, and what a genius choice of music to end an era....
Also Portsmouth's Radio Victory played this as their last song when they ceased broadcasting on Saturday 28 June 1986 at 12 midday, after they lost their broadcast licence to a new company called Ocean Sound...
Always see the magic 208 on the dial plate of my 1971 hacker sovereign mk2 in my view the best British translator radio ever made still packs a punch now Turning that dial cord brings back so many memories and long gone station names I will never sell it
This is such a truly beautiful song. It will always remind me of an 8 year old girl I met in Lourdes who sadly passed away three weeks later. That ginger hair, freckled face and that cheeky smile.
Neil Sedaka wrote so many excellent songs. My mum was a real fan back in the 1970’s and took me along to a concert in Brighton. I also got a chance to meet the man himself at an event in London, had my photo taken with him and met his wife……Such a nice, down to earth human being. His music is as fresh today as it was back then.
The Lyrics were written by Howard Grenfeld as were most of Neil's hits. He wrote this to mark their first parting of the ways as collaborators. As excellent as Neil's arrangements were, I don't believe that Howard was ever given enough credit for his work.
Always loved this song . . . it's like a final farewell to the good times of our youth. I saw NS sing this at a concert in Blackpool (of all places) back in 1974 (I think) and it had me, like a lot of the audience in tears.
Strictly a UK hit, (you lucky Brits) I was just cruising through the UK charts for Sept. 1973 and saw this song, never heard it before, but it won't be my last. Great song I rank it right up there with "One Way Ticket" and "Oh Carol" as favs. Hallowed ground. Neil has written many of my all-time favorite songs Heartbreak love songs he was a "Little Devil" true Neil was the "King of Clowns".
Got this a gift for my 21st birthday. I asked my sister in law to buy it. She was horrified being a truly hard rock girl but bought it anyway. 10CC (Godley and Cream produced the album on my doorstep in Stockport)
Surely the most prolific and amazing singer songwriter of all time, just look at the endless list of songs he has written, produced, sang, etc. Amazing, God bless you Neil!
Absolutely agree TOTALLY! Neil has a back catalogue of around 1500 songs to his name and he still performs today and still sounds AMAZING! this has to be one of his most BEAUTIFUL! songs too
What a fabulous song , what a great melody line , written by a musical genius ! starts off, following the circle of fifths . and comes back to the beginning again . just how a great song should be. add a great lyric and you have a classic song . music that will last forever .
First saw Neil Sedaka on my fifteenth birthday at Batley Variety Club.My mum and dad took me, along with my 72 year old Grandmother (who was a very good pianist herself and used to play piano for the silent movies). Several years later I took my future wife Carol to see him. Carol was also a very good pianist. I remember once singing On Carol to her at a Karaoke night at Bradford City Football Club. She was a bit embarrassed.
Brilliant lyrics by Howard Grenfeld. If you listen carefully, he has incorporated references of the many Neil Sedaka hits he wrote the lyrics for. This song was meant to signal their parting of the ways as song collaborators.
This was the last song Sedaka composed together with Howard Greenfield as he (Sedaka) prepared to move to England. This was the ending of their partnership, and thus the title and subject.
This is a very important song for the great writing/performing due Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith and they wanted to have this track used at the end of the beautiful 'Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room' (if you have seen you know why)
Ironically, this song was indeed supposed to be the last song co-written by Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield but their another last song "Love Will Keep Us Together" become their biggest hit when recorded by the Captain & Tennille in 1975; so Sedaka & Greenfield resumed songwriting partnership in 1970s which culminated in their last hit, "Should've Never Let You Go". Interesting how fate twist and turn in real life.
A beautiful song, personally I consider it to be his best. I tear up when I hear it, remembering the family and friends, the simpler times & the love I lost (but not she's not forgotten) in the late 70s.
I’m going to have this played at my funeral. So loved Neil and the 4 tops. In the day….
I had this played at my late friends funeral. Everyone began crying, including the vicar
I'm having this played at my funeral. Hopefully a long time from now.
Beautiful choice. Meaningful choice.
this masterpiece evokes memories of a simpler time a long time ago.
I had this played at the funeral of a very treasured friend of 24 years. I still miss my old friend and employee
This song always makes me think of my late brother, who produced the album. ❤️
This should have been a big hit in the US. Underrated and one of his best!
Big hit in the UK where he is appreciated.
Going through divorce more than a decade ago I was listening to this song. Every sentence in the lyrics of this song hit me hard at that time. I’m glad I went thru that hell and am in a happy second mariage. Sedaka is a prolific and genuine composer.
I know the feeling pal😎
Helping my wife move out this weekend. To say this is resonating with me right now is a bit of an understatement! Fabulous songwriter
What happened.... I hope you are coping well.
❤️

At last, someone else who remembers Fabulous 208.

One of the most beautiful soings ever written and sung by the brilliant man who wrote it.

Neil still had a career in the UK when he fell out of fashion in the US.
i remember playing this song on a jukebox in a pub at dinnertime on the last day i worked for a firm in january 1974!!!
Brings back memories of the 70s The past everything but dead and gone.
Nice song I was one year old at time of release and now at 50 year old it’s a classic ❤
One of the most beautiful songs ever. And its two songwriters saying goodbye to their creative partnership, Sedaka and Greenfield.
Had this at my mum's funeral 4 years ago miss you everyday.x
Happy memories of this beautiful song from this brilliant pianist & songwriter when I was a wee nipper, aged 7, in 1973 😊
I’m with you there. Same age, same memories.

absolute Legend and hes dong daily Medley s in these tough times
It's a shame the younger generations don't take time to listen the great music that came before.
What a fabulous song , what a great melody line , written by a musical genius ! starts off, following the circle of fifths . and comes back to the beginning again . just how a great song should be. add a great lyric and you have a classic song . music that will last forever .

I like Neil Sedaka's compositions but not his voice.
