    This might be my favorite whiskey review format. no bells and whistles, lots of bottles thoughtfully reviewed. it's a great value for the time it takes me to watch.

    Awesome work Roy! I look forward to these so much. Today I saw it pop up in my feed and honestly, I couldn't wait to get home and watch it on the big screen. Thanks so much for taking the time to share these thoughts with everyone!

      Aqvavitae yes! One and the same! (should probably change my TH-cam username 😂) - did try messaging Julie @ GWC after your suggestion, couple of times now via Twitter, but not heard anything - I’m probably doing it wrong! Our whisky tutor (John Lamond) thinks it’s possible the GWC has a waiting list 😮

    Entertaining and educational as always. Aimee and I watched this on my lunch break, on the TV the day it came out. I had to convince her to wait for me! Roy I really wonder what your neighbors must think if they ever see you outside talking to your recycle bin. If anyone ever hassles you, let us know and we will take care of them right away. Thanks again. Keep ‘em coming!

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi George and thank you for your continued support! Yes, my neighbours have asked directly what I'm up to but it's more curious fascination followed by incredulity than anything resembling hassle, thankfully. It can feel a bit silly standing at your bin talking to a camera! Thank you and Aimee both for being around - it's very reassuring!

    It's people like you and Ralfy that burn holes in our pockets with all those delicious whiskies! I was writing down a list of next buys, and now you've made me add about another five to that list Roy! :D
    Really like AnCnoc 12, I had it at last years Hogmanay, I let it sit with a couple of drops of water in it for about an hour until the bells rang, and when I had it, it was glorious stuff. One of these bottles that gets better the more you go through the bottle!
    Had Spice Tree sitting unopened for about a year now, really need to get that rectified!
    Heard from a reviewer about Tomatin Legacy a while back being good value but forgot all about it. Seeing you liking it here too, reminds me I have to buy it now; it's always on special in the shops.
    Great vid mate, keep it up!

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you fella and yes! That Spice Tree won't disappoint - it's a lovely, well-crafted and tasty dram. The Legacy is a good guilt-free every day sipper!

    Well done Roy! You did do a great job again with this one! Great fun to watch and very informative at the same time! You invented a complete new whiskyreview format! Perhaps you should do this with mini bottles the next time, then we would'nt have to wait so long for the next one! ;-) Slàinte!

    Fantastic once again Roy! Well done and thank you! Now, I've noticed you had a bottle of Glenfarclas 25 (maybe it was the 21) in the crate as well... Are you replacing that bottle as well? ;-)

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow!! Really I wondered if anyone would spot that! Amazing! Yes - after the shoot I realised I'd reviewed 16 bottles (actually it's a good plan for future shoots to do that should I mess one up) so on this occasion I dropped the Glenfarclas 21yo as I'd done the 10yo already and last time I did the 25yo. That's a sharp eye right there - I feel like you should win a prize! Cheers!

    Got to say, I have yet to have a bad GlenDronach, hopefully I can still get a hold of the 8 year old. The Legacy is a great whisky for the price, nice and tasty. I am not sure if you have had the Spice King by Weymss? It is very similar to the Spice Tree, it would be good to compare the two. As for the Kinninvie 17 and 23, I haven't had the 17 but the 23 is one of my favourite whiskies of last year, I have kept a little dram of it for further down the line - like you said, I wouldn't buy it again due to the price. A real shame about that Royal Brackla, not one I've tried mind you and don't think I will now. Another amazing video Roy, looking forward to tonight's vPub, cheers.

  • @lanalex4826
    @lanalex4826 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Loving this format so far, a major concern of mine though is how long it takes to get an episode of this as you basically need to finish 15 bottles to do one of these.
    I'd try suggesting maybe going more in depth for each bottle so you'd do about 10 bottles/episode and not get stretched too thin?
    GREAT review as always!

    Oooh would love to try that Glendronach Hielen 8. Also, totally agree with you on the Nikka Coffey Grain. Do have a Kinivie 23 sample coming - can't wait. I feel bad for you on the Brackla 16 =( ... You're definitely not the only one who feels that about Jura's official bottles. Thanks for sharing Roy, and hope to see ya on the air sometime soon.

    Amazing video as usual Yoda. I have only had two Jura's and they were both terrible. I was suprised with how much you liked the Hielan and the Nikka Coffee Malt...time to make a trip to the liquor store:) I love Spice Tree...the Extravaganza edition is magical if you haven't had it.

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hielan' was a challenge on first opening. In time it became quite different and all the better for lots of air. The Coffey Malt is very bourbon-esque in style. I bought that about 3 years ago now, I wonder if it's still as good. Look forward to your thoughts. Both should be pretty affordable. Thanks for stopping by buddy!

    @eivindkaisen6838 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In an earlier video you tried (failed) to find a redeeming feature in The Dalmore, and here you have similar problems with the Jura. They are, if I'm not mistaken, made by Whyte & MacKay’s Richard Patterson. Could that be the reason?
    BTW, loved the improvised cork popping!
    Great stuff. Eight and a half out of ten. maybe more :-)

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha. thanks Elvind!
      I never judge a whisky based on the maker - only by the experience. In the past whisky has taught me not to pre-judge. You're correct about the owner of both Jura and Dalmore. They also own Fettercairn and Tamnavulin, and I'd only consider independent bottlings or single casks of those too, the official bottlings don't appeal. Always, I encourage people to try for themselves. If people are having great experiences with these whiskies that is absolutely valid.

    • @travisfaircloth
      @travisfaircloth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Octarine is also sherry and bourbon matured 8yr but looks darker than the Hielen. Most say it is better and more sherried. It was discontinued a few years ago. I'm assuming the Hielen was it's replacement. www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/26495

      Funny story. That was water. I'd been filling bottles with water and chilling it to drink alongside my flights and I obviously forgot to drain that one fully! Now - may I ask you - where do you think I got that idea from? 😜 Yes, Quig. It's actually your fault and I give you full credit for it in a Patreon-only video I posted. Great video again! As someone young and relatively new to whisky I find your videos great for recommendations aswell. I just picked up a Jonnie Walker (yeah, that new) Gold 18. It's absolutely delicious. I got given a Hakushu 12 for my 21st recently, and I've found myself enjoying the jonnie walker even more, keeping in mind I've drank less than 100mls of each. My question is, should I put aside the Hakushu for a few seasons until I've expanded my palate or will I come to appreciate the Hakushu more as I make my way down the bottle?

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hakushu is probably not quite as accessible as the JW, but yes - give it time. Better to buy your next bottle before finishing the existing stuff, then you get to contrast and compare - that's when it gets really cool! Enjoy the journey ahead - it's pretty awesome! thanks for the nice comment and stopping by!

    Wow I love these reviews! Such a great format and your comments are excellent, my whisky wish list is expanding rapidly! I loved the Hielan, even preferred it to the Glendronach 12yo, found it sweeter and enjoyed the additional Bourbon influence. Keep the videos coming 👍🏼

      Thank you Mark - great comment to read and welcome on board! The Hielan grew on me over time and I loved that Glendronach decided to put a confident 8yo age statement on there. Look forward to seeing you around!

    Thanks Roy, pretty much in agreement on every one. But I don't have the RB16 in the collection, nor have I tried it (well for 15 years or so). I almost bought it today -- $130 US -- but just couldn't do it based on reviews. It's frustrating to have a hole in the collection, but especially after your review I'll just have to wait until they (or an indy) comes up with something better.

      Thanks Walt! I kept holding out for that RB16 to develop, and it never did. Some drams are delicate and reveal themselves over time, but this stayed so...plain. In a flight it was a disaster and tasted watered down. Not bad whisky - just... no engagement. Maybe try a bar pour or try the 12yo (which I thought was ok) or 21yo (which I've yet to try).

    Craigellachie 13 didn't work for me. After what you say, maybe I'm still too much of a beginner or the 0.1L sample wasn't enough to get to know it. But that weird note in there that I suspect is from sulphur in the casks spoiled it for me. On paper it looks quite good though. Seeing the prices over here it shouldn't be more than 40 quid right?
    The Coffey Malt was already on my list, gained a few priority points. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
    Glenfarclas 10 was probably the most positively surprised I ever was of a whisky. Not because it's the best there is but for what it does for its price - not even close to 40 quid (below 30€).
    What's your opinion on the Jura Superstition? I actually thought it wasn't bad for the price. Rather chocolaty, but it also reminded me a lot of fried vegetables, could understand if that throws people off in a whisky. :D (It also got a lot better over time in the open bottle.)
    I'm wondering what a whisky has to do to get a bad grade with you, if you still give 7/10 to whiskies you didn't like. :D Still always enjoying these videos though! :)
    PS: Loved the Nikka "cork". :P

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comment deserves a little thought...
      I have a friend who loves Jura and the superstition - I know there are stacks of people who do. If I slate a whisky out of personal dislike I am pretty much telling them that the wonderful, positive experience they are having is somehow invalid. Which of course it's not. It's completely subjective. So - although it's hard - I try to keep the scores in context and based around quality. I try to score whiskies based on their genre and try to be as objective as I can. 7 out of 10 for an entry level malt should theoretically match a 7 out of ten for a £200 20+ year old bottling... I feel they should be judged against their peers and, if possible, try to keep it about quality rather than personal preference. But, since this is a human thing - there's no official calibrated system for scoring whisky so it needs to be just fun and used as a guide.
      Jura has often had odd notes for me. Overly honeyed, overly sickly, or sometimes just a bizarre aftertaste, What's worse is they can sometimes be utterly bland. Not all. But most of the OBs. Independent Juras can be great. I'll keep trying them because I once hated Deanston - and I just voted that my distillery of the year last year! Whisky has taught me never to say "I don't like". It always catches me out. Hence the lack of backbone with the scoring 😉
      I will be very relieved if that somehow made sense. Thanks for commenting buddy!

    • @Everest314
      @Everest314 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you say "I personally dislike this whisky", there's nothing wrong with that. As long as it is clear that it is your opinion. I have this with Oban. Lots of people I know love it, I sort of hate it, but I make sure it is understood that I'm not doubting the quality of the product, it just doesn't work with my personal taste. Same with the Craigellachie (my girlfriend quite liked it, she hates Oban too though :D ).
      You sort of did slate the Royal Brackla, but with good arguments. But if you compare that against its peers either by price or age (or both) it seems to me that especially then it should fall below 7/10. But yes, it's totally subjective and I listen more to your description than the points anyway. Besides, it's your video so you do whatever you like ... and if it's splashing yourself with Glendronach. :P
      After having watched your other videos though, if you said "(I think) this whisky is shite", I would never think that you say that out of an unfair bias.
      I will also always keeping trying things out when I can. Not sure if Talisker would be my favourite distillery now if I had first tried the Skye, though. :D I'm also doubting if I can still say that, but opinions on whisky changing is a good thing no? Keeps us exploring new stuff... I still have to meet my Deanston moment though. :D

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree. Although I love Oban! 😅
      This is the first time I put a disclaimer in the description of a video about scoring. I never intended to get caught up in scoring - in my first ever "Recycled" I even said "I don't like scoring whisky!" and yet - here I am. Ho hum. My only concern is folk who take it to the absolute letter...
      If we ever get a dram together - I'm gonna slip an Oban in blind 😀

    • @Everest314
      @Everest314 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, we definitely have to have a dram (or a few :P ) together some day (or days :P )! Please do try that with me, I just hope you will remember then and I won't. :D I've actually already challenged one of the Oban lovers to pull that trick on me but I doubt that it will work because we've talked about it too often. I'm just puzzled why I have such problems with Oban, because with all other whiskies I didn't like I could put my finger on something that I think was wrong with it and I would be very happy if someone tricked me into an Oban and I ended up liking it. :D (At least part of the explanation will be the fact that my first Oban 14 I had in a pub on Skye that was positively opaque with smoke and next to an unpleasantly drunk Scotsman ... :D )
      Don't worry about the scoring issue. I hope it didn't sound like a complaint and I hope you didn't put the disclaimer because of me. Just wanted to exchange opinions and maybe tease you a wee bit. ;P

      I think it's still fair to appraise a whisky on a sample or a bar pour - as long as the reviewer is open about the context. I think of a sample as a first date - you make up your mind on whether or not a bottle purchase will turn it into a relationship or not. 😊 😜

  • @crow468

    One of my favorite single grains out there is the Nikka Coffey Grain (I have also tried the malt which I liked well enough). If you hadn't already tried it, it's pretty remarkable (especially for the price!). I've had two bottles of the Spice Tree and one of the Extravaganza. Amazing. My favorite Glenfarclas is the 15 (really hard to find anymore in the states though :( ). I'll have to try the Deanston 12! I've liked the Virgin Oak and the 18. I agree with you on the Jura standard bottlings (a shame). Totally agree with everything you say about AnCnoc (I so miss the 16).

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every time I meet someone who has felt that way about the AnCnoc 16 I feel a kindred connection with - it was wonderful wasn't it?
      I have tried the Coffey Grain and liked it very much, but that Coffey Malt could take rum, bourbon, vodka and cocktail drinkers and turn them into whisky fans. I was accused of adding chocolate flavouring once when I pointed out the note! 😜 It's a bit sweet in the long term for me personally, but given the idiocy surrounding Japanese malts right now it's a good prospect.

Out of curiosity, I opened this same bottle last night and had a complete revelation ( not quite an epiphany ) ... completely changed my mind about this Whisky. Really looking forward to these reviews in the future! Love the music and all. Going to have to try the anCnoc 12.
    When my local liquor mart 1st got Glenfarclas they accidentally gave the 12 yr the same price tag as the 10. Talk about good value! That was changed soon after, not before I could get a bottle(although I should have grabbed 3).
    I tried a Tomatin sample pack that had the 12, 15, and 18 year and was disappointed. Nothing stuck out and they had a very safe, generic flavor. Perhaps the little 50 ml samples didn't do them justice.

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could also be the previous versions of Tomatin - they had a hike in engagement in the last 2 years. That said - they're malt-driven and can be a little hot for some palates. Maybe have a look at Aberlour for good value Speysiders like your Glenfarclas 12.

    Appreciate your passion (expressed in a very restrained way). Personally I don't even look at blatantly overmarketed non-integrity bottlings like Jura and Dalmore, unless maybe at serious discount. Perhaps they'll eventually hear us, certainly sounds like it's starting to work with some producers. They can easily spend their marketing resources on educating the casual consumers about cloudy whisky, higher strength, adding water, colorant, etc. That can all be the "story" instead of the various viking legends and other stuff like that. Maybe even include a 10-pence bottle of purified water that distillery uses as a gift packaging. If you must charge for water, just include it separately. PLEASE.

    What does anyone think of Shackleton whiskey, the standard and the anniversary one?

    Someone from Japan gave me the Nikka Coffey Malt and it was very smooth and, yes, chocolate in the tasting. Too bad SWA said barley malt couldn’t be distilled with this process. I’m imagining how Golden Promise would taste with the Coffey still.

      I agree - could be heavenly!
      However, as I understand it - they are permitted to distill malted barley through a coffey/column still - they just can't call it Single Malt as that requires pot still distillation to be called "Single Malt Scotch Whisky". If they distilled malted barley through a coffey/column still it would need to be labelled as "Single Grain". There isn't a provision in the definitions to define the type of grain used.
      Short-form definitions available here (sorry Hoyet - you probably already know this!)
      www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/media/12744/scotchwhiskyregguidance2009.pdf
      "2.3 Single Malt Scotch Whisky means a Scotch Whisky produced from only water and malted barley at
      a single distillery by batch distillation in pot stills.
      2.4 Single Grain Scotch Whisky means a Scotch Whisky distilled at a single distillery but which, in
      addition to water and malted barley, may also be produced from whole grains of other malted or
      unmalted cereals. Excluded from the definition of “Single Grain Scotch Whisky” is any spirit
      which qualifies as a Single Malt Scotch Whisky or as a Blended Scotch Whisky. The latter exclusion
      is to ensure that a Blended Scotch Whisky produced from Single Malt(s) and Single Grain(s)
      distilled at the same distillery does not also qualify as Single Grain Scotch Whisky."

      Aqvavitae So they could do something similar to Nikka Coffey Malt, just have to call it Single Grain? You listening Compass Box? 👍
