The fact that Phil Collen went out on the G3 tour recently knowing Vivian’s true capabilities blows my mind! The Holy Diver solo alone earns him that spot! Don’t get me wrong , Phil is great but back in the 80s-Viv was the real guitar hero. He quit producing impressive playing after Dio unfortunately but still has it in him.

Def Leppard too. Imagine a book. Drummer loses his arm. Builds an electronic kit and plays one handed. You'd say it was stupid. But I'm sure one day there will be a film about them. I read an interview with Vivian once saying that he gets a new Les Paul and rips the frets straight out and puts jumbo's in. It sounds savage, but it's his tool.
Great sounding, and equally great looking guitar. Vivian Campbell inspired me to want to learn to play the guitar from the second that I heard him on the first Dio album, and I still feel inspired to play every time I hear him play, even today.
What a joy to see him healthy and recovered again 😀

He’s an all out badass and great musician. The first rock star I had the privilege of shaking hands with. I’ll never forget seeing Def Leppard in Camden, NJ. Day of the show I bought tickets, front row... at the end, Vivian walked right up to me, leaned down handed me a guitar pic and shook my hand.

Go Vivian. Creator of some of the most awesome hard rock/metal riffs/songs, part of one of the biggest Rock bands ever - he even beat fuckin Cancer. Legend. Oh, and now he’s got his very own killer gorgeous Gibson Les Paul 🤘
They either edited out the rest of his story about the gold les paul or he didn't mention it. He ordered a goldtop standard but received a wine red deluxe and didn't the color so he painted it black and changed the pickups. Something like that he has told the story before.
And still plays that guitar in all his stuff outside of Def Lep like Thin Lizzy, Riverdogs and especially Last In Line

Because he doesn’t play Gibson’s anymore. He left them for Dean guitars and Gibson is still salty about it. That and Michael would have to be willing to go back to Gibson and start playing them again too.
dirkworld ESP made a japanese version of the block inlay black and white V under the "Edwards" brand, but I think they were fairly limited, and they are expensive if you can even find one.
@@crazytrain591 That's the reason he left Gibson. They weren't willing to let him have a signature and weren't willing to work with him at all. He had a nasty divorce and lost almost all his instruments of value. Dean stepped up to the plate and that's how it went. Sad Gibson didn't recognize his loyalty. Of course, then they offered a Rudolph black and white

Vivian is one of the 80's rock and metal masters. His work with Dio, Whitesnake , and Def Leopard is timeless, I remember he was the first metal guitarist I ever saw use p90's in a metal video. Gibson got it right on his guitar too. I don't give a shit about these trendy fools always talking trash about Gibson when they get it right nobody does it better.

I was 14 in 1984 and the Holy Diver album is what brought me into the Metal community. Vivian was my first guitar hero. I still listen to those albums.

Congratulations dude! I have a question though. Is it really the Dimarzio Super 3 in the bridge and the Super Distortion in the neck? Only reason why im asking is because I've looked up the specs before on gibsons website and a few other websites and they say its the other way around. I just think if it is the Super 3 in the bridge and the Super Distortion in the neck its a little odd considering they are both primarily bridge position pickups.
@@timtomasello4529 Sorry for this late answer, but honestly I don't know. Both of them pickups were too hot for my setup, so I changed them for Burstbucker Pros, which I like best.
This will not help you, I'm afraid.

The specs say the pickups are Dimarzio Super Distortion and a Super 3. I've never seen a Super Distortion of any stripe with slug and screw poles. Makes me curious.
Beyond the fact that I love his playing he just seems like the coolest dude!

When you can remember each note in o long solo some body has done a great job composing, I’m not sure it’s something that can be learned.As a guy who doesn’t play that well for the time I’ve been at it, I am in awe of these guys. Campbell, a truly amazing person to meet and know. met him back in the 80s at vesleys drum shop. very humble guy, and i believe he kept leppard alive and pc jealous. but they kept him seems like on the outs for years, then finally realized hes a part of the music family. a true legend to rock n roll. lost my pic i took with him back at the randall guitar amp thing he put on back then. Gibson is lucky to have such a signature artist model guitar. I would buy it in a minute. wondering what it fetches in price tho? i got some cool memories of this era and meeting all these guys and almost going to work with a major band.
I wish I can afford this in future Mr Campbell to me youre riffs are legendary.

He did. I hated it. Respect to Def Leppard and what they have achieved but I never dug their music. Pop rock, not very intricate or technical, not that that's the most important thing. I just never felt there was any depth. I couldn't believe he joined that band after his phenomenal work with Dio.
I like Def Leppard's music up to Adrenalize. But sadly after Steve's death, it became the Phil Collen show guitar wise. Which like you say is sad to see, as Vivian is definitely the better guitarist and should feature so much more.
Vivian I’m sure was secure enough in his own ability and accomplishments to LET Phil have at it.
And as all playground kids know, Phil was there first anyway.
Isaiah Marquez I can agree that seniority runs in bands and newcomers have to take a more back seat. Phil is good but no way can he carry of the same sound and technique and charisma that Vivian can and does. Here’s hoping Vivian has a successful recovery and continues to give this world the pleasure of hearing him play.
whats a dimarzio sh3? is it a Super3 w/screws in it, as I see that his Super D has screws as well.

I was 12 when Holy Diver was released, i was taking guitar lessons at the time and my guitar tutor and i put LP on and our jaws remained on the floor for the 40 minutes or so.
Loved Vivs playing since. The only Dio guitarist of significance and a really humble guy despite what people think....

I would have thought his signature guitar would have been a replica of his black 77 Deluxe with humbuckers. That is what was used on the DIO,Def Lep and Last In Line projects. But its his to choose what he wants. Rock On Viv

Luckily, mine doesn’t have the mini -tuner. And that brass, zero fret was a joke! The slots cut in it weren’t finished, strings kept binding in the nut.
Edward Van Buren My 2017 Les Paul doesn’t have either of those things. I do love the push pull pots though.
That guitar is so badass, the only thing I would change is the corian nut or however it's spelled. I don't like that stuff and it's a pain in the ass to change out Gibson nuts these days they purposely install them in a way that you have to send it to Gibson to get a different nut installed. I figured out how to cleanly remove and replace the new nuts but it takes about an hound a half. That's a job that usually takes me 20 minutes and thats cutting, shaping, fitting, and slotting the new nut as well. I just prefer a bone nut with the slots aimed at the tuning machines and cut perfectly, nothing beats that sound not even rollers.
I like his Nighthawk though, and did I hear him right? The bridge pickup on this Les Paul is a DiMarzio SH3?
I Think He said it wrong in the video...the hs-3 is a single coil "strat" pickup....I think its a Super 3, and a Super Distortion in the neck
I guess not, DiMarzio has a HS3, HS stands for humbucker in single coil size, which was developed for YJM many years ago, whereas Duncan SH3 is Stag Mag humbucker, not familiar with this model but I would say DiMarzio SD in the neck would be way too hot, but there are no hard and fast rules for that
I just checked the Gibson site, and I was right...its a Dimarzio Super 3, with a Super Distortion in the neck. You are right....depending on the bridge pickup, a super distortion in the neck can be very hot and unbalanced,....but considering they are basically using 2 super distortions, im sure its a balanced set. The Super 3 is basically a "hotter" super distortion.
JJ Collins thanks for the efforts, Super 3 is a bright sounding humbucker, DiMarzio use DP for their pickup codes whereas Duncan uses SH, so thats some confusion

Great player, I loved the Dio era stuff. One thing I can't understand is if this pickups are "super distortions", then why don't they have "hex" polepieces?
Both the original SD and the Super 3 come with hex poles, and these pickups seem to have slug poles and fillister screws, like a Seymour Duncan?!!
I'm sure this affects the tone, as the hex pole pieces seem to keep the low end tight. They must be custom versions of those pickups, although it doesn't say it anywhere.

First thing I noticed is the bridge is low. I love that. Hate when the angle of the stop bar to the bridge is so damn steep. Neck set and bridge must be low. My preference. Nice guitar. Not sure about the color.

@@ericthompson3394 no he's from Ireland born and raised until he joined Dio at I think 18 and went to LA, then joined to Def Leppard and played with Thin Lizzy, he's lived in LA since I think the 90s so he's accent is fading more American than Irish

Great player and a legend in this part of the world (N.Ireland) especially. No doubt PRS, or Fender, or some other big guitar company, will buy Gibson guitars when they eventually fold. Hopefully whoever it is will address the problems in QC that modern Gibsons have, and and make the brand great again.

What a gentleman.
I met him and took.a photo w \ him last year. We talked about both of us being cancer survivor s,both Irish and both le s Paul players and last but not least our hero - Gary Moore . He is laid back but cool in a way .He definitely blows away Phil wanna be cool from de f leppard on the guitar for sure! Vivian does not take his shirt off in front of little girls in de f leppard.He does wail on the guitar when he jams out dio tunes,quick fingers!
