    Great video, and you are so right! I’m a very experienced modeler but haven’t built anything in many, many years. This shouldn’t have been my first kit back, but I could not resist. Always wanted to do the Scammell, but never wanted to pay for and tackle the Accurate Armour kit.
    New modelers heed this video. This is a pretty tough build, and thought I would start easy with the trailer ... even that proved to be a tough job. This is no Tamiya kit, you must pay close attention to the alignment of the pieces before they dry.
    Thank you for posting this!

    Interesting video. Of course the huge attraction to these Scammells is there are some still around in civilian use as recovery vehicles and fairground vehicles. Thus there are a wealth of variants you could model with these, never mind the military variants.
    In the mid-60s, any commercial recovery operation worth it's salt and at least one ex-Army Scammell. Even Leyland vehicles had a fleet of ex-Army ones and they could have built themselves new ones such was their reputation as being indestructible.

    Think the transporter will be my next build, something to carry the Matilda that is being painted at the moment. Am expecting it to challenge me but, at this time of more spare time on my hands, need something to push me

    Hi Nigel, just a quick heads up for the tank transporter. If you are not aware already, the jack handles are show in the instructions as being fitted to the jacks, in actual fact they would not be fitted unless raising or lowering the trailer to remove it from the tractor unit. The handles are kept in the large locker under the trailer, as are the winding handles for the ramp lowering winches. The guide rails on the loading ramps are only fitted when raising or lowering he ramps. The instructions show them as horizontal bars with the ramps in the up position, totally wrong. I love the wood effect on the kits, you have inspired me to have a go at it.

      Gedii W thanks pal. I was aware of this thanks. I will be drilling mine out to add to the realism. There’s another issue with the trailer, the ramps need to be slimmed down so they fit in the underslung rack.

      The jacks are also missing the pressure release thumb screw. Search TH-cam for the original WW2 Scammell training film, it’s a bonanza of close-up detail shots. If you cut off the jack handles, make sure to add a short section of hollow tube, just like modern bottle jacks.

    Cant find any age restrictions on these models in the instructions or on the boxes. Content is fine and clear of child involvement or advice to children.

    I'm building the scammel and trailer just now not a fan of Thunder models the injection pin points you have to fill and the seam lines are pretty bad don't think I'll build another maybe try an IBG see what the moulds are like! The foot rest is missing from the driver position next to throttle I'll have to scratch and the rifle racks

    Nigel, I was watching the original Scammell footage here on YT and noticed the winch sitting square on the chassis vs at an angle like you have it. Is this an option to show that the winch pivots on the chassis a bit? 🧐

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheSaturnV hello. To be totally honest I don’t have a clue?? All I do know is that all three are the same so I can only assume I got it right and if there’s an error the kit is wrong??

    • @TheSaturnV
      @TheSaturnV 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NigelsModellingBench Thanks for humoring me. It was just the angle or something in the footage that fooled me. I found a couple of threads online about real Scammell Pioneer restorations and it's clearly installed on the chassis at an angle. Thunder got it pretty close!

    Hi Nigel, I have the tank transporter in my pile to build. Can you tell me how you achieved the wood effect on the cab floor, please?

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Andy. the woodgrain is all there on these kits, except for the cab underside, which you cant see anyway. I paint the plastic parts in tamiya buff, then give it an acrylic satin clear coat. After 24 hours paint the panels with a dark brown oil paint and leave to dry for a coupe of hours, then as if dry brushing, move the oil paint around and remove excess with cotton buds. Once you are happy give it another clear coat then you can add washes or dry brushing to your taste.
      There are many ways to do the wood, this is my way.

    Nigel, can you help me with the trailer bogies /swing arms. Parts J1 & J2 part J1 has a different offset to the servo units. Does part J1 or J2 go to the outside?
    I know it probably doesn't matter, but it would mean a lot to me to get it right!
    cheers

    • @hoppinonabronzeleg9477
      @hoppinonabronzeleg9477 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NigelsModellingBench I have found the answer - There is a very slight offse brake servo units for the trailer goes offset to the centre of the trailer. Ie J2 to the inside, and J1 to the outside.
      I found the answer in the Capricorn publications AW18 Page 31 Also P9 shows servo offset biased to the inside!
      I am going to attempt your steering mod this week!

      The thunder model kit is much better.

      I've built both and while the IBG version is not of outstanding quality, I didn't come across much flash and the mouldings were crisp. Thunder Models' version had missing detail where plastic hadn't flowed fully into the mould, an indication of poor quality control. Both kits are made from a soft plastic, far below the quality of Tamiya's. Of the two, IBG's is the better.

  • @AFV85
    @AFV85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My Thunder scammels are kinda bad for missing detail the amount I have had to add to them from the scammel recovery videos on TH-cam just silly things like the foot rest next to exelerator peddle the top of the secondary guide gear for the main whinch the top bracket it's missing the top to the guide rollers for front whinch with added chain the spring on the left hand side to whinch there should be an arm like on front wheels coming up with a bar to the gearing wheel to whinch with the cut out cable to engine etc! And then the seam lines and injection points are ridiculous the trailer was really bad! The inside of the roof that I had to fill there and sand the thermostat o the front radiator that's missing inhale had to make from scrap PE! Not to complain to much it's just all this is added in the IBG kits! And hopefully there is a resin wheel set out for it these 5 peice inserts are horrid! IBG again win with the tyres too being solid plastic and these thunder Thunder models are not cheap! At £75 for the tractor and trailer i would expect better! Never had such a bad kit since my old Zveda scout car! I was going to buy the jagdpanzer 38T recovery vehicle from Thunder models but I think I'll be giving that kit a wide berth now! Oh and the frames to the front seats in the scammel was just pointless even moulding plastic on a sprue for them! They just disintegrate when sanding iBG again are bitty thicker but solid i had to redo mine with .3 rod! I'm sending my recovery scammel back and going for an IBG kit now looking and researching them videos god even the back seat rests are horrid I'm so so disappointed on a kit of a vehicle I absolutely love! Its unbelievable the extras I have put into this kit even the engine crank isn't in the kit haha just left with a hole! Em No!
