Yes it's true the Corsair had folding wings, like almost every carrier plane...but that wasn't the reason for the gull-wing design. The gull-wing allowed the landing gear the clearance needed for the massive 13+ foot propeller. An ugly duck for certain, but it was one of the best and fastest fighters of WWII... important and capable enough for the Korean conflict as well.
The gull wing design wasn't for the clearance of the propeller. I thought that was the reason too, but there is a really good video that explains the design process for the Corsair that points out that the P-47 Thunderbolt had a 13' diameter prop too. IIRC the reason for the gull wing was due to the cylindrical cross section of the aircraft's fuselage. The wing root was angled down to optimise the airflow across the section rather than having to have a fairing a horizontal wing root. @@pencilpauli9442 : Excellent information, thank you! Ya know I always thought the idea was off because of the huge propeller on the Thunderbolt as well. Yes, you're one of the few people that got the connection with my username. The Tempest Mk V was one of my favorites of all time.
@@tempestfury8324 Definitely a cool name! Am a big fan of the Hawker stable, from the Hind family through to the Hunter and the P1127/Kestrel /Harrier The Tempest hast a 12' 9" diameter prop, and apparently the 3 blade Typhoon prop was 14' ! @@pencilpauli9442 Excellent! I'd like to see your work! I've loved models and miniatures for decades now but nothing really compares to my passion of the brilliance and horrors of WWII. As a kid/teen my father would take me to airshows, mostly the Reno Air Races...where a Sea Fury there would just be ripping it up! Hey this flew under my notifications radar! lol Luckily Part 2 showed up. Looking forward to watching the game play. I always feel a need for a DVG Leader game in my collection. Good luck Ricky!
I have been playing Leader games since the original Hornet Leader from GMT back around 1990. Also a huge fan of the original Down In Flames system, and like how GMT has taken the better parts from the DVG edition and improved the game in Wild Blue Yonder. That said, I’ve been hugely disappointed by pretty much every Leader game put out by DVG. I almost always run into a rules question that I spend an hour trying to resolve, and sometimes do without resorting to the inter webs. I also hate the INSANE number of aircraft/pilot cards, which require more storage and raise the cost of the game. I also have yet to get a mounted board that isn’t warped to some degree. At some point, I decided to pull out Corsair Leader and give it one more try. I almost immediately went into some corner case that wasn’t explained or noted in the FAQ. And yes, I had the latest PDF of the rules. I play ASL and can answer questions about rules fairly quickly. I can’t answer anything about DVG titles, I really wish they organized them as a learning portion in the front, then reference in the back. Combat Commander had rules more or less like this, and they are still considered to be one of the best rule sets in gaming. DVG uses the same template for all of their rules, and they just don’t work for me (and I was a technical documentation editor for a while). I highly recommend Wild Blue Yonder if you like this but would like a somewhat different system at a similar level of complexity (although without a decent solo game in the box, I just work around it by not looking at any card unless I absolutely have to). You’re a great presenter, Randy, and I appreciate you taking the time to help people to learn to play games that are trickier.
Thanks Doug. The rules have been a real struggle, even with the errata and FAQ... Hopefully this video will help other people to get playing quickly. R.R>
Richard, do you happen to know who makes or sells that large divided organizer you use? I've seen it in several of your videos and have tried unsuccessfully to source it on my own - lol
Hi, Thanks for this video. I bought the vassal mod and I am following along. Can you please check the B-25 Mitchells you chose. In Vassal they are considered USAF. Is this correct? Am I allowed to pick USAF even though scenario says Marines? Cheers
You can; don't worry about whether it is Navy or Marines, or even whether it is US or some other nation; just stick with the correct YEAR and aircraft TYPE.
From sports games to war games, your videos are always great and explanation of the rules very clear.
Let’s also not miss Zero Leader! The newer, Japanese-side version. Glad this video is out to verify a few things…

Veteran of B17 Queen of the Skies here... just love this type of game
Little fact correction, the avenger was the torpedo bomber, not the dive bomber. Thatd be the dauntless
thank you !
I have Target For Today - interested to see how this compares.

An impressive game. I can see why it might feel overwhelming to get into but seems worth the effort. I look forward to seeing the game play.
I can only recommend all of the leader series games. Yes, they're definitely not everyones cup of tea and pricey but I just love them

Interesting... looking forward to see how it plays.
Just bought Zero Leader and the rules are a disaster. Guess they still have not figured out how to write rules…frustrating..
