The 2016 AFF Championship, or the AFF Suzuki Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the 11th edition of the tournament, ran from 19 November to 17 December 2016.
The group stages were hosted by Myanmar and the Philippines, marking the first time that both countries hosted the group stages of that said tournament.
Also, just as applied since the 5th edition of the AFF Championship in 2004-05, the knockout stage is played over two legs on a home-and-away format. Thailand won the tournament after beating Indonesia 3-2 on aggregate, thus winning their fifth title.
It is the last time that the old format applied during the tournament, as in March 2016, the AFF was mulling over changes to the tournament format due to the failure to attract big crowds for matches not involving the host nation. Beginning with the 2018 edition, a new format would be applied. The nine highest ranked teams would automatically qualify with the 10th and 11th ranked teams playing in a two-legged qualifier. The 10 teams would be split in two groups of five and play a round robin system with each team playing two home and two away fixtures.
