- Black Canary had an interesting start to her time at DC Comics. Arriving at the tail end of the Golden Age she was initially brought in to revitalise the character of Johnny Thunder. Instead she ended up bumping him out of Flash Comics. Just what was it about her that made fans gravitate to her? What did she have that Johnny didn't? Find out here on Casually Comics!

Johnny’s so clumsy he accidentally knocks other people out? He’s like a reverse Hal Jordon.
I have done that in dark souls
@@davidmallette8079 That’s impressive. 😂
?
@@lennyfiasco9834 yeah I missed the key(using a keyboard) healed by mistake, three jump attack one misses two bounce off each other and the fourth I had already dodged(?). One of them may of fallen off the map.
I liked that the Thunderbolt introduced himself to Jakeem with “Let’s just say you ain’t never had a friend like me…”
Extremely iconic. On the nose I’m a fun way. Can’t help but to think of genie. I already like the aesthetic and fact that he’s an obscure legacy character
Poor Johnny Lastname, if only he could pull off fishnets he wouldn't have lost his thunder.
😂
Fishnets on Johnny? Let's not get all Jimmy Olsen on him now!
Sasha: "What's hot?"
Me, Watching Her: "Er, uh, hoo, wow, oh boy, you'll never believe this, but..."
Global Warming?
Yah. Been there with Sasha too.
How Johnny Thunder is represented in the Stargirl TV series shows that modern writers on the show have more respect for the character than the folks writing the comic back in the day.
Johnny was DC's original "weirdness magnet."
Agree! Everything you just said, PLUS! The choice of actor, the dialogue, and wardrobe choices. Same for Wildcat in that scene. It was a refreshing surprise! And the show keeps going…
@@jpboursaw4469 oh, very much so! I cannot wait to see the show use these characters more, and see how they move the story forward!
Stargirl really is the best show on The CW. Best DC show in general to me. Not my favorite, but I think it’s definitely the best.
Johnny Thunder is kinda like a proto-Jimmy Olsen. Some guy in a bowtie who gets swept up in crazy adventures outside of his control and is friends with a far more competent superhero.
Except that Jimmy Olsen is himself far more competent than the hapless Johnny Thunder. More intelligent too.
@@anonyarena Not to mention that Jimmy's relationship with his hero is based in his own merit as a person(Supes wouldnt give the signal watch to just anyone), while Johnny got his genie by sheer luck and a specific number of condintions that were completely outside his control. Boy, was Johnny Thunder the luckiest man on earth (in everything other that having a popular comic).
@@pedrovallefin8406 I agree with you 100%. It's yet another reason why Jimmy Olsen was such a popular and relatable character, that he was even given his own title! It's not only that Superman likes him, it's also that WE like him, and so we can see the qualities in him that makes Superman like him. We don't feel this about Johnny. If anything, he feels annoying. If Superman is top-billing and Lois is co-star, then Jimmy is basically not even the second but the third-banana in the Superman triad. And how many third-bananas grow to be so popular that they even get their own TITLE? I'd guess not many. It speaks right to Jimmy's likeability and relatability that this could be achieved. But, I see Johnny Thunder relatable to practically nobody. Jimmy is super-relatable and Johnny is unrelatable. Who has such low-self-esteem that they see themselves as this much of a clumsy oaf? And yet simultaneously sees themselves as so LUCKY that they always win in the end?? I have read all the Johnny Thunder stories in the Black Canary book that I have, and I find Johnny as difficult as I find Black Canary herself to be fascinating. Black Canary is truly a very mysterious and compelling (if woefully underused) superhero. And her look is, of course, iconic. Johnny Thunder doesn't even LOOK interesting. Strange, isn't it?
@@anonyarena While all that being said is probably right (i havent read enought Johnny stories to know for sure), i still think the concept has potencial to work as its own thing. Without necesarily having to be a less likeable Jimmy Olsen. Though maybe that would only work without the character itself. Cause, as you said, Johnny is too much of a cartoon (and not even a funny one) to be relatable or even interesting. But, consdering he already has a well stablished legacy character that inherited his gimmick, it wouldnt be that hard to update the concept with someone else (Jakeem) in the center. This kid with the weirdest luck that always lands him in the most ridicoulus scenarios that he tries to solve using his all-powerful genie, only to complicate things further. Maybe the mayor update could be that once the genie fails to resolve everything inmediately, Jakeem has get out of the situation using his own wits, with or without the genies (most sudued) help.
@@pedrovallefin8406 I wholeheartedly agree with you. Johnny Thunder, as depicted in his Golden Age persona, was really very much a "one joke too many" kind of character. But the refurbishing of him in the way that you suggest COULD work. The concept was never the problem, it was always the execution of that concept.
'Johnny, you were never a hero. You were always just a weird guy we put up with 'cause ya had a "pet" thunderbolt.' Al Pratt (the original Atom) summing up Johnny Thunder's time in the JSA in The Golden Age #2.
*There* it is.
I knew _someone_ would drop this reference. *"The Golden Age"* was the first - and _only_ - time I'd ever even heard of Johnny Thunders... until *now...*
Ouch, poor Johnny. Robison had no mercy in that one.
"Is singing at you hot?" Depends what it is- if it's a sultry song on a piano, yes. If it's an aggressive sea shanty probably not (but then your fathoms may vary).
Also your personal skill at singing probably helps
@@ALunarLight This is a fair point.
Either way, Aquaman would know for sure…
...and if she's singing "Never Gonna Give You Up", well....
I don't know I love aggressive sea shanties
I loved how Johnny once said, "Say you idiot, do something!" Then the thunderbolt could do something.
I would like Black Canary in Stargirl. Odds are they do her more justice compared to Arrow.
I was gonna say that it would be complicated to do worse that what Arrow did, then i remenber the Birds of Pray movie and i have to shut up.
@@pedrovallefin8406 I stopped watching it halfway. What a gross movie
@@gabbar51ngh I have yet to watch it, but isnt neccesary to note how bad of a adaptation of most of its characters it mades (Huntress seems prety alright).
Arrow botched the Black Canary so many times we ended up getting two good characters out of it.
I once had an idea for a complete reimagining of Johnny Thunder where he's a native Badhnisian who's aware of his powers and uses them to fight against colonialism
The 90s Justice Society comic had a girl Kiku who was the "last Badhnisian" and she could summon the Thunderbolt (the 90s JSA comic was also the series that introduced Jessie Quick). Unfortunately Kiku got forgotten in favor of Jakeem, who was originated in the Kingdom Come mini-series before getting brought into mainstream continuity.
That sound like the beginning of a great Elseworlds story. Keep going!
A native Badhnisian fighting for colonialism is way more interesting. Cause colonialism is awesome! 😈
Yeeeees. Please write this. One day, even if it's a short or one-shot, it'd be cool to see.
When steal your girl becomes steal your comic.
Who has it worse, Johnny Thunder or Harold Hamgravy. One lost his comic to the guy who stole his love interest, the other lost his comic too his love interest.
So far all I know is that johnny is basically the " why's gamora?" Scene from infinity war personified
Black Canary is my favorite DC character, and reading her golden age appearances was really interesting for me. For one, Dinah loved being Black Canary. One time, Dinah went on a date with Larry, where she makes up an excuse to leave, and comes back as Black Canary to finish her date. Golden age Black Canary is second best Black Canary (Birds of Prey being best).
Is such an iconic character that dc is finally noticing
@@miksobrado if it wasn't for wonder woman then black Canary would have been DC's main female character.
@@gabbar51ngh maybe but in the case i dont complain. Dinah was created for men and until simone, Taylor and flechter she was seen as a male fantasy. Diana was created, written and thought for women theres a huge diference.
@@gabbar51ngh the issue is that dc la pretty doubtful on the rotating jl members. When its a woman they are still figuring out who should be in the seven original members. For us the fans is obvious that is should be black canary. Is dc the ones are not seing it
@@miksobrado because wonder woman isn't male fantasy somehow. Sure.
It's ok Sasha. We are still here for you. As penance, you have to do the history of Hawkman!
I just can’t believe how popular Shazam was in the golden age. He was more popular than Superman and Batman in the 40’s. Today Shazam is like Johnny Thunder and an obscure fifth wheel character. It’s crazy to think how Shazam’s popularity over shadowed just about every other super hero in history.
The original Captain Marvel was published by Fawcett Publications, which was a much bigger company than National Periodical Publications/All-American Comics in the 1930s and 1940s. They also published paperback novels as well. Fawcett Publications got out of the comic book business, because they lost the lawsuit over being a "Superman" imitator, and also due to the pressure from the public after "The Seduction Of The Innocent" was published. Instead of trying to create a new set of characters, under the constraints of the Comics Code Authority, Fawcett decided to stick to just publishing paperback novels.
I once heard a Bob Newhart stand-up bit on Superman where he clearly got his outfit confused with Shazam
With movies Shazam is gonna be popular once again.
Shazam one was pretty great & sequel looks fine.
The OG Vigilante (Greg Saunders). They kept trying to replace him with ski mask knockoffs but the OG Cowboy keeps on coming back. Just glad he's back in official canon, hope they do more with the OG Seven Soldiers in the future. They were the second superhero team in DC history.
Stuff, his sidekick, was meant to be a (1940s) critique of the racist stereotypes of Chinese people, especially sidekicks, because instead of being a racist cartoon with broken English. He was a hothead Asian-American who spoke in American slang and proper english. It was the 1940s so there were plenty of other shoddy things as well, but it was a genuine attempt. He was also the FIRST superhero to ever get a tv show. It was not accurate to the comics, with a white man playing Stuff, and Vigilante being a federal agent, but it was The Vigilante.
I did not know this about Stuff.
@@LinguarumFautor Oh, Stuff was badass. He did more hand-to-hand fighting than the Crimson Avenger in the 7SOV stories, and he relished it.
Who else do we need? Dr. Mid-Nite, Hour Man, and original Sandman! Need reprints of their Golden Age adventures!
It felt like Johnny Thunder was like Archie without the Riverdale cast of characters. Well now I'm dying to know what the error was with the sound.
With all 7's, I either thought something biblical, or Fairy Tail.
Singing to impress someone seems to only work in musicals and music video plots.
I... Actually like what Johhni Thunder was doing there, seems visually more interesting than the others.
Kid Eternity was a golden age character that I always enjoyed reading. He was revisited as an agent of Chaos (as opposed to Doctor Fate and the Lord(s) of Order) in the 80s/90s. The interplay between him and Mr. Keeper was fun, or creepy as the cases may be!
The Johnny Thunder stories never really found their groove. I'm honestly surprised they lasted as long as they did.
That origin, in addition to being super racist, is also super weird for what is essentially a supernatural comedy series. They seemed to walk it back pretty quickly, too, since in its second appearance Badhnisia is only mentioned as the Thunderbolt's homeland. But that story also involves it being invaded by Imperial Japan (!) so still kinda racist. It still pops up from time to time, like in Tom Taylor's run on Suicide Squad.
Did they ever outright say Johnny Thunder has supernatural luck? Because it sure seems like he does.
As a side note, All-Star Comics №6, the issue where Johnny joins the JSA as an official member, is great. The JSA hazes him by sending him on a wild goose chase. Also, there's a panel where he calls himself Dr. Fate's boy friend.
Hey look, it's Peachy Pet, in what I'm pretty sure is her final Pre-Crisis appearance! She is actually Johnny's daughter, albeit adopted. Eventually, she marries the Thunderbolt's son, making Johnny and the Thunderbolt brothers-in-law. It's a bit of a shame we don't see much of her after the Golden Age, since I really like her. I tend to find the "bratty kid" archetype endearing. I wonder what would have happened if they'd brought her back earlier. Maybe she could have joined Infinity Inc. and we'd have had Johnny Thunder passing the torch earlier?
Older or more obscure characters? Well, I just wrote a whole paragraph about Peachy Pet, so I'm probably her number one fan by default. I am also really fond of the original Atom, Al Pratt. He did the "mild-mannered alter ego" bit really well. And I always like it when I see Dan Garett, the first Blue Beetle, show up. Yes, even the edgy Rebirth version. Speaking of Blue Beetle, and getting away from the Golden Age, Countdown: Arena from 2008 was a terrible miniseries, but the Blue Beetle designs were fun. I especially liked the one that looked like a xenomorph.
Ma Hunkel. Well, you asked for obscure character requests. Red Tornado's past is a mystery I'd like explored.
I have always felt that Jimmy Olson with his "Superman signal watch" was the silver age version of Johnny Thunder.
I just wanna know why Johnny Thunder stole Jimmy Olsen's cloths. He accidentally kills someone, steals people's cloths ... who is this guy???
I'll never forget an old 1940's ALL-STAR COMIC where Johnny Thunder gets a cold, so he can't make it to the JSA meeting. So he puts a PERSONAL AD IN THE NEWSPAPER that was all: "SUPERMAN, please take my place at the next JSA meeting. I have a cold." The guy felt that his replacement in the JSA while he's sick should be SUPERMAN!
Makes sense, actually. For the duration of one hour after saying, "Say you," Johnny can make literally anything happen that he wants to. Superman's one of the few people out there who can compare to that kind of power. There was also Dr. Fate and the Spectre, but they were no longer around because I guess "they just didn't end up catching on" as well or as successfully as Johnny Thunder did.
Say you? Cei-U? So Johnny Thunderbolt was the Earth-2 counterpart of Snapper Carr!
You want a suggestion for older characters? How about Adam Strange, DC's take on the Flash Gordon/John Carter concept?
Also, I totally want to see an updated take on the Metal Men, maybe adding some elements that were overlooked back in the day. ("Bismuth, meet Tungsten and Nickel.")
I second Adam Strange.
And a retrospective on the Rann Thanagar war would be interesting 😄
@@thedon-e6514 Which one?
Nickel should adopt a Siberian accent.
How about a commentary retrospective on what Tom King did to Adam Strange. Who likes it, who doesn’t? Is it compelling enough to to be built on in years to come? Or will it be retconned in the next DC Big Bang Bash-It-All. Is it canon or cannon fodder?
@5:41 I'm tempted to make a spreadsheet to enumerate when Sasha introduces herself in her videos, because I'm a data geek, but there's now 356 videos (at the time of this recording 😆)
Lol I introduce myself when I remember to
@@CasuallyComics As if we’d forge-wait, who are you again? Seriously, though, 356? Wow, you know you’re going to have to cook up something extra when you hit the 400 mark! Maybe another suggestion box. Pretty sure the first ones stuffed full. Just a suggestion…

But what about when you write in Sharpie?
@@PsiNorm Oh, so that's what happened to the villain The Eraser.
Speaking of Star Girl, how about talking about Shining Knight and the Seven Soldiers of Victory?

The audio gives old-school TH-cam vibes, it weirdly makes me nostalgic
15:15 - on Black Canary - "She was brave!"... and Bold?? Eh eh eh... I'll show myself out...
"Daisy Darling?" Why that's kind of cute.
I knew about Johnny. But I didn’t know The Black Canary debuted there. See I made sure to put The in there.
It is an important distinction, ya know! Just ask The Bat-man! 😉👍
You showed a picture of the Golden Age Red Tornado. Ma Hunkel needs some attention!
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son! That immediately put the Iron Maiden song in my head.
I don't know if Cissie King-Jones/Arrowette is obscure, but she definitely needs to be used more.
Considering she mostly just apeared in the YJ series back in the 90s, i would say she fits the term quite well. Thst said, she was adapted for animated series in more that a one episode rol, so she isnt as obscure as Johnny or Secret from the same series.
I didn't know Johnny Thunder had solo stories. I've seen him in JSA where had often been referred to as the team's mascot so I assumed he was just a part of the old JSA series.
I'll second that DC should do more things with Jakeem Thunder
And I recently read the Johnni Thunder Mini and would mind seeing more stories with that character either. Maybe a vertigo series.
I honestly did not notice the audio until you pointed it out with the insert.
About a quarter of the way into this I got Josie Cotton's "Johnnie Are You Queer?" stuck in my head and the story arc itself is making that stay just on humor alone with how Johnny Thunder is asa a superhero.
it really reminded me of The Spirit by Will Eisner, in Canary's costume and Johnny's comedic antics, your mileage may vary.
Another young Lady that pushed out the lead of a comic; Merry, Girl of 1000 Gimmicks stole the Comic of her 'Brother', The Star Spangled Kid!
You know what? NOW I want to know about that last Johnny Thunder solo story!! Bring on that missing issue!
I've always loved Johnny Thunder and the Thunderbolt. I first discovered them in the seventies when I would read those Justice League/ Justice Society crossovers. As for obscure characters, could you do one on Phantom Lady?
Thank you so much for explaining how Black Canary was a villain whose publisher ended up making her into a hero. I really thought that was a Marvel thing, like Wanda & Pietro leaving the league of evil mutants to become Avengers. Maybe I missed it, but did you say whether she started as a natural blond versus being a brunette with a wig? And she did start as a normal person who evidently gained the "canary cry" later on (golden age? silver age? later?)
She had her canary cry around the original jla comic issues 73 or 74 then joined the jla in issue 75 with her canary cry it was later explained in the 80s that this version was the daughter of original and given a canary cry from been an infant
The little girl was Peachy Pet and I believe she was Johnny's adopted daughter. Not sure when he adopted her and what happened to his original/girlfriend fiance`.
As The Grand Archpriest of The Church of the Algorithm, I bless this video with a comment.

Ohm. Ohm Shiva. Ohm
BLOOD! BLOOD AND SOULS FOR MY DARK LORD ARIOCH!!!! Oh, crap. Did I say that out loud? Sorry, should’ve read the room…
...was ...was Johnny Thunder the first Jojo?
He's pretty similar to a Jojo! The Thunderbolt is basically a stand that can do anything you wish for
In hindsight Black Canary had more story potential than Johnny Thunder did.
Not really. They had equal potential. She stood out though because of the design.
I'd say Johnny might have more since he dealt with low level crime but you could put him in more fantastical stories.
But black canary didn't have anyone who looked like her. Johnny is a generic suit guy.
That scene of them hiding in the gas tank is kind of unsettling. Just makes you feel like they are about to be lit on fire any moment after they get out of it.
Wonderful review, as always. Black Canary reached her peak with the early birds of prey comic by Chuck Dixon. And rode the wave of success in the Justice League cartoons.
When it comes to older and obscure characters, *they're the best.* It hurts thinking they'll stay in comic book limbo.
Yes, but Johnny Thunder is a great "idea" for a character that was never properly executed. The concept: A clumsy, awkward kid who by chance happens to get an electrical genie, and so he uses it to thwart crimes, is COOL! The actual development of a relatable and interesting character from this great idea was so poorly done, it was not a surprise to me that Johnny not only failed in his own stories, but he even failed as a member of the Justice Society of America! While it might be common for heroes to fail in their own solo stories because they're just not strong enough to carry top-billing, it must be uncommon to EVEN fail as a member of a super-team! That is REALLY something. It means he could not even cut it as just another-face-in-the-crowd. And that's like..."wow!!!" I suppose it is possible that with the right writers his character could've worked out pretty well. I feel the enormous potential was clearly there; but, something just wasn't gelling with him. The writers did not seem to be able to overcome the problem. When they brought in Black Canary to "help" Johnny become more popular, and she got such a positive response, I feel like it must've seemed like a no-brainer for them to ask themselves; "What are we doing? Why are we still lugging this dead weight Johnny Thunder around? SHE'S the star! We gotta dump Johnny and give the readers more of Black Canary." And she's lasted all these years, for 8 decades, she's the second most recognizable DC female hero after Wonder Woman! I mean, who isn't some sort of a female counterpart to a popular male hero (as is Supergirl, Batgirl, Hawkgirl, etc) and so, for Black Canary to have lasted this long solely on her own strengths, she must be doing something right.
I hope you know how _unbelievably_ funny that first Johnny Thunder joke was
Not being sarcastic, it caught me off guard and I laughed
Johnny Thunder is Dennis the Menace with a Genie in a world full of Wilsons :P LOL
Anything doing with the JSA or its' members would be welcomed by me!
Johnny Thunder seems like he'd be a fun character, with the right writer. I'm a big fan of Johnny Thunders, the guitarist and song writer of the New York Dolls (and later solo stuff, and eventually being dead). ANYWAY, I had no problems with the sound, your Black Canary inspired outfit was great and the makeup was ON POINT! Fantastic!
And before Johnny Thunders of the NY Dolls and The Heartbreakers in the 1970s, there was another Johnny Thunder in the 1960s who recorded for Diamond Records. He had songs like Loop de Loop, Everybody Wants To Dance With Johnny, Don't Be Ashamed, Outlaw, Zoo-Lee-Oh, The Rosy Dance, and Constitution of Love.
@@anonyarena Gotta check that out! Thanks!

I think Deadman, The Atom, Metamorpho, Adam Strange, Rip Hunter, The Phantom Stranger and The Black Orchid should get more recognition. I would also like to see more of the Doom Patrol and the original Justice Society of America.
What you said. Plus the 7 Soldiers of Victory.😉👍

@@painvillegaming4119 That is a hard choice, between The Phantom Stranger, Dr. Fate, and The Spectre.
I didn’t notice anything wrong with the audio - I was distracted by the magnificent wiggatry.
I always liked Jakeem better, to be honest. Johnny always seemed like he was just allowed to hang out with the JSA in a kind of patronizing manner.
My REAL question though, when is the Stargirl series going to cover the forbidden love between Stargirl and Shazam? That was such a wonderfully awkward situation handled in the JSA series.
That plot was so awkward but also the uncomfortableness of it made sense.

I recall with great fondness finding a new 64 page giant special put out by DC. They leaned on all the near-misses from the Golden Age. They were what made the Silver Age look less silly (to a teenaged me, anyway). Maybe... Johnny Quick? Jabber an equation and run like the wind! Or The Ray? Nearly naked man running around... And, of course: Robin Dies At Dawn!
The most interesting thing I learned in this video is that there are actually people out there who will leap to an impassioned defense of Johnny Thunder.
There's people for everything and everyone. And for every superhero too. Why, in this coment section alone you have a numbee of them. I just read this guy thar wrote a bible ablut his apreciation of the OG Vigilante. I thought all the people who cared about him were already dead, and yet there it is.
I enjoyed the Johnni Thunder series. I read it recently. So this is a great, informative, video!

If anything, knowing you enjoyed the vibe you gave off the first go around makes me excited to watch
The "YZ" name was a late 90s retcon by Grant Morrison to justify the Thunderbolt being from the same realm as Mxyzptlk.
Evidence suggests that All-American Publications' top editor Sheldon Mayer really liked Johnny Thunder. Mayer was more of a humourist (see his semi-autobiographical "Scribbly"), and as the editor on the early issues of "All-Star Comics" was responsible for Johnny being in the JSA stories before Johnny was even a member [similarly the one page Red Tornado gag in All-star #3 was Mayer.]
I suspect it was Mayer who pushed for Johnny Thunder stories to be included in National Publications' "World's Fair" two one-shots.
By the time Black Canary showed up, Mayer had "retired" and All-American was becoming a part of National.
Bob Kanigher always seems like an ass. Then again, he tried to get Dinah together with Bruce as a couple in the one issue of JLA he wrote. It was painful.

"Watch the Birdie!" was a commonplace thing for mid 20th century photographers to say. The "birdie" was there to focus to attention of the people sitting for a formal photograph.
A character who’s name starts with “Jo-“, has a magical entity that “Stands” by him, and goes on “Bizarre Adventures” sure sounds like a fun idea.
In theory, Thunder could have more going for him because he does have more personality than the other JSA members (granted, that personality is "clumsy") and the "hero who is useless" genre has been successful in animation.

I noticed the audio, I support the decision of choosing to keep the bad audio with the good vibes. I'm not in this channel for the high quality sound, I'm here for the vibes.
I too noticed the audio. I too chose to ignore it. Superior work always shows through. And passion. Superior work, passion, and love for the material. (Stopping now, Python does the gag better),
I’d like a focus on any Golden Age characters but always had a sort spot for Sandman. From the silver age I always like The Atom. Also what about the Mighty Crusaders? Just a few thoughts.
I didn't even notice the sound issues. I was too busy being entertained and informed. :)
Ooh yes, I knew a couple of Johnny Thunders. DC reprinted BC's intro in one of their beautiful 100 Page Super Spectaculars around the same time they reprinted Alex Toth's masterful All-Star western adventures of the same name. Ah to be young and broke...
So Johnny was the Jar Jar Binks of his time.
Wait........ Sasha is a TIMELORD (TIMELADY)?........ And when she changes her look, she is actually Regenerating like Romana did?....
Oh my gosh. Sasha doing a sassy diva impression: my cheesecake needs to calm down. 😅😍😂
Just like with Wonder woman, every once in a while, there will be a discussion on whether it's more progressive for Black Canary to wear pants or not.
The answer usually change every couple of years.
That’s one of the things I love about these videos. With terms like stealing thunder, scandalous, and sultry singing, it’s like you’re TMZ. But for comics!
Johnny’s later appearances were definitely better. Especially Doomsday Clock. He finally escaped the Sanitarium when he realized WHY he couldn’t call the Thunderbolt. Read for yourselves, gang.
Another reason the original Black Canary was popular: she was modeled after starlets like Veronica Lake and Lauren Bacall. It was a look. Something else often overlooked was her Post-Crisis confession to her daughter of an affair with Starman. Sure, make jokes that he waved his Cosmic Rod around, but I’m thinking it was the head-fin. Who could resist? Yondu knows what I mean.
Scandalous.
As for unappreciated characters of the time? The Terry Sloane Mr. Terrific. Unique origin. Or the Al Pratt Atom. Here’s a guy that didn’t have much in the way of powers, intellect, or height. Didn’t stop him. And don’t get me started on the Adult Earth 2 Robin…
HAVING SAID THAT: I’m gonna once again issue the challenge to compare and contrast Lucas “Snapper” Carr vs. Rick Jones! Who had more impact? Who copied whom? Who had more neat-o keen kool catch-phrases than Greg Brady? I jus’ gots to kno!
Stealing thunder, indeed.
Loving the Napoleon Dynamite voice for the Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt Genie will now forever be played by Jon Heder in my headcanon.
The whole bad luck that’s also somehow good luck angle. Like Todd Chavez, that’s pretty relatable.
To some degree Johnny is a powerless Greatest American Hero. (That tv show with William Katt and Robert Culp)
(Tips fedora) “M’lady”
Huh.... I never knew this was the Black Canary's origin. Interesting. To be honest - I never really even wondered what her origin was for some reason.
Don't worry about it Sasha, this video looks fine on my television and the sound is also good on the home theater system.
I did not know about the connection of Black Canary with Johnny Thunder. It's her classic romance/partnership with Green Arrow that t am familiar with.
You are right about the _'Stargirl'_ television show showing proper respect to the Justice Society of America.
Ok this is absolutely freaky! I was literally in the comic shop 2 days ago and saw this Black Canary comic on the shelf and read it on a whim and liked it. And now you're doing a review of it.😆🤗
I had a huge portion of All-Star Squadron as a kid, because the local comic shop had them cheap. So, I became acquainted with a lot of obscure World War II heroes from that. I would be interested in seeing you discuss Liberty Belle, Firebrand, Shining Knight and Amazing Man. I'm probably the only one.
Older obscure characters that need respect on their name: Starman, Alan Scott and Vixen all powerhouses with very little respect.
Captain Britain, Hellcat and Quasar in Marvel need steady good writing and a streamline of story.
Stargirl is low key clutch with the legacy heroes.
Also… there’s something wrong with your audio. Just… uh, wanted to let you know. ;)
I think you need a poll:
Black Canary
Black Widow
Mockingbird
Silk Spectre
Ooooo and Phantom Lady
And btw, great video! Highly entertaining.
Sorry but they are all literaly either a copy or a ripoff black canary
I like the lore they added later that the Thunderbolt genie was a 5th dimensional imp like good ole Mister Mxyzptlk, Batmite and Mopee (and a handful of other characters).
