Wow! Love that BMD has been so focused on making workflows seamless and integrated, and not just for those who can shell out big bucks. I can only hope this mentality starts to carry over to other companies.
Absolutely! Also I'm really enjoying your videos Avery, (loved the monkey sort film) especially the ones where you try to emulate a look (like the stranger things video) and would be really grateful if you could do one on "It" (2017) as I just can't quite get it for the life of me. Awesome!!! This is a hugely positive development for the industry. I hope the new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K gets support for BlackMagic RAW without delay. A Big Thank You to the entire team at Blackmagic Design.
Sony already has a compressed raw codec and it works very well. Blackmagic RAW is going to be a Blackmagic-only product, and what is unique is they had to navigate through a bunch of RED patents in order to legally design their raw codec. Now BM seems to have patented some things, so this looks to be a BM only product/technology.
What I am getting from the info so far is that It will be fully open for software companies to implement reading of the codec in their editors etc, but if manufacuters wanted to put the codec in their cameras I think they would have to ask blackmagic and probably pay a licence. Otherwise BM would give away an exlusive feature of their hardware product and not even get anything for it. But hopefully other camera companies will see it as worth it. Panasonic for example are very video oriented. They have probably shyed away from raw becasue of the headaches outlined in BMs presentation video: (cinema dng not containing sensor info, being a folder of still files, hard to edit etc. ) This codec promises to get around those problems, so I hope it would make life easy enough that they would go for it.
Blackmagic is the single company in the entire universe that deserves to have fanboys after this. I mean how the hell am I supposed to remain objective after this? They can delay the pocket a month more and I would still love them to bits!!
Nah i mean even their first 4K camera from 4 years ago, the BMPC blows that out of the water. And you can get one of those used for the same price. You should never be able to get a used camera from 2 generations ago thats better than the current gen at the same price.

Canon take some note, please. You can have this RAW built in your camera or ProRes RAW. It won't hurt you. I'm getting BMPCC 4K for sure. RED no longer has the best RAW implementation out there.
I 100% get the apprehension when the P4K was announced about Prores Raw. This takes all the benefits of that....and then kicks it's butt while making it open to other camera manufacturers and editors AND is OS agnostic. If you google issues folks have with other codecs you begin to realizes this solves nearly all of them. I am so freaking stoked about this!!!!!!!
This guy really isn't doing the best job at pointing out the advantages of Blackmagic RAW vs ProRes RAW. Blackmagic already had a lossy RAW compression that compressed at similar ratios to ProRes RAW: 3:1 and 4:1. The difference was that lossy CDNGs were a constant bitrate and in a folder structure (which has it's own advantages) while ProRes RAW was variable bitrate and stored in single files. Blackmagic RAW's least compressed option is 3:1 which obviously is comparable to PRR HQ and CDNG 3:1. After that the options are 5:1, 8:1, and 12:1 which are all MUCH smaller sizes than PRR and lossy CDNG AND there are VBR options in the form of Q0 and Q5. With 8:1, 12:1 and Q5 we're essentially talking about shooting 12-bit RAW at 30fps at under 400 megabits per second. At 4K DCI 24fps in 12:1, you're talking about RAW at 25.6 MB/s or about 207 megabits per second. If you combine it's added versatility to the fact that it's free to implement and Blackmagic essentially made ProRes RAW obsolete before it really even got off the ground. Does that mean it'll definitely be more widely except than PRR? No, not really but I feel like the odds are in it's favor.

BRaw can't fully do that because part of the demosaic is done in camera. 2. PRR is non proprietary. While BRaw could possibly be that way but it again is sensitive based. All PRR needs is to have a connection powerful enough to send the data.
I'd like to shoot an outdoor night scene in an extremely low light situation with a URSA mini Pro which is not meant/known to be the best camera for low light situations. Can you guys explain whether shooting Blackmagic Raw can help with the image quality of a low light scene while keeping the ISO low?
I talked to blackmagic support and they said that bringing this functionality to older cameras like the BMPC and BMCC which are still stuck on CinemaDNG was one of the first things that they thought about. But they said they don't know if its physically possible yet and it will be a while even if they do.
9:15 I am assuming he misspoke on the data rates being megabits and meant megabytes. They are not interchangeable words, but a lot of people seem to think they are.
Yeah, if shooting high quality RAW was really only ~127 Mbps, we'd all be there already. What gives it away that he misspoke is when he starts talking about how much recording time you will get on a card: 256 GB being ~23 minutes of UHD. It can't possibly be the megabits!
@@ArcticPathway not true. The common way it is spoken about is Megabits (Mbps). The A7 III highest data rate is 100 Mbps and the GH5S is 400 Mbps. His misspeaking of saying 127 Mbps is actually 1016 Mbps which is almost exactly what a C200 RAW Lite file size is. I would guess less than half of people would know the difference, certainly not everyone.
Jeff, your forgot to capitalized the B in 127 MB/s. Plus he was wrong about the data rates as well. 127MB/s would be around the size of 3:1 RAW. Blackmagic RAW supports 3:1 as it's minimum fixed compression ratio while it's lowest is 12:1. It's lower bit-rate VBR mode, Q5, seems to support between 7:1 and 20:1. So at 24 fps at 4K DCI, it can be as small as 25.6 MB/s (204.8 megabits per second) and in Q5 it would range from about 19.5-45 MB/s (156-360 megabits per second).
@@myownfriend23I was basically quoting him, which is what he said Mbps, not MBps. Blackmagic released a video produced in their studio a few hours ago talking extensively about the new RAW. I just hate this new missleading marketing. COMPRESSED RAW IS A PARADOX ITSELF! It's not raw, end of story. RAW is the new big thing, people get attracted like flys in to a light bulb. Let's create a product and use some key words to get opublic attention. 10 bit, 12 bit, log, High Dynamic Range, extended dynamic range, bla bla bla! In the end some of them are worse than 8 bit codecs.
Sorry but that is factually incorrect. RAW doesn't mean "uncompressed". RAW has ALWAYS been compressed. Uncompressed RAW is impossible to deal with even for Hollywood workflows.
Under your definition losslessly compressed CDNG also wouldn't be RAW despite the fact that there is no image degradation. That doesn't make any sense. Also Red, BMD, and I believe Arri have had "visually lossless" compressed RAW codecs for awhile.

@@CineD some people will never get it. By his logic, iPhone 4k and Canon C200 RAW Lite footage are on the same level because they are both compressed.
to be fair the C200 RAW lite is essentially what they are doing here, blackmagic is just offer more compression methods.
Under your definition losslessly compressed CDNG also wouldn't be RAW despite the fact that there is no image degradation. That doesn't make any sense. Also Red, BMD, and I believe Arri have had "visually lossless" compressed RAW codecs for awhile.
James Jackson Films
Blackmagic and Red had compressed RAW with ratios similar to RAW lite before RAW lite existed.
