  • In this video, Gav gives us a look at a group of the birds of prey known as Red Kites as they swoop for bacon scraps outside a cafe.
    This was shot at 2500fps (100 times slower than real-time)

    For anyone who's curious about the tag on the birds! those are used by ecologist to help track the birds for reasons such as migration, population and nesting!

Yeah the tags have been very useful and they've been well looked after, trained to help hunt going into wild and have been seen across the UK now instead of localised to a small area of Wales

    1:21 to 1:33 . You can see the feathers on its back rippling up in the turbulent air, while its slowing down. I wonder if feathers help produce more drag when the birds form is in that configuration. The birds back looks like it's surface area is increasing, thus increasing drag. Versus when In forward flight those feathers lay flat and smooth, which would be a lower surface area with lower drag.
    It actually reminds me of certain race cars that have panels that open up to produce drag under certain situations. They open when low pressure areas are formed. maybe something similar is happening?

      +Terrance Storey You should read up on stalling. I'm pretty sure that's what we are seeing on the back feathers there. It is, as you said, detached flow on the top side of the "wing", due to a superior angle of attack than the critical angle of attack, which is particular to every wing shape.Cheers!

      I know I'm answering this 6 month old question that you probably forgot about but in stock car racing(ie Nascar) there are flaps on the roof of the car that open up when the car is moving backwards or at a side angle at a high rate of speed. They both slow the car down by increasing drag(similar to the dive brakes on an old dive bomber) and force air into the holes to increase pressure to force the car to the ground in order for it not to flip. The more you know

    It's amazing how these birds have successfully managed to bread again. They were becoming extinct from the 16th century right up to 1800s. Due to farmers complaining about loss of game and people fearing they would take babies causing people to cull them. They are scavengers they would very rarely take live food. They were protected in 1903 and are to this day.They are a magnificent bird and should be respected.

      Totally Incorrect information that you stated there regarding them being injured birds , sorry
      , - they are a species that was being successfully re-introduced to UK using donor birds from European stock mostly, - and as such every bird,adult or juvenile, is tagged on the wings , injury is not the reason and various different colours of tags etc denote information such as male/female etc
      Anyway - I think Koe Seer was just making a joke, not really being serious. . .

    • @Tyler-Bravo
      @Tyler-Bravo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know he was making the joke. I don't live in the UK so I wouldn't know, I live on the East Coast in the USA. Maybe they are tagged for different reasons but I have taken multiple birds to "clinics" not a vet but, similar, and they fix the birds problems then let them out to the wild again. They put tags on them that look exactly like those, that's the information I stated. Sorry if it was incorrect, as I said I don't live int he UK.

    • @SharpeICE
      @SharpeICE 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So there is bread there, that doesn't change the fact that red kites, don't eat bread. If you watch closely then you can see they do not pick up the bread, but the pieces of meat, in this case bacon, which was the entire point of my comment, so there was no point for yours.

They're basically bird people, some having wings and arms, some just having wings, but they're all pretty interesting. While looking for what to make mine, the red kite looked like a pretty nice species! Sadly, most pictures I find are low quality or a picture with an angle that makes reference a pain. Since I'm making a semi realistic costume, the variety of angles in this video will be very helpful! (Not to mention, it's gorgeous to watch them in flight. Kinda reminds me of a swift and agile vulture. But the pretty cousin.

    It would be cool if you filmed a barn owl in slow mo. Their flight is very unusual and has been compared to a butterfly. Their flight is virtually silent. You could start by building a barn owl nest box by a field and then film them flying in and out of the nest. The breeding pair will consume at least 2000 mice in one chick rearing season. Talk about eliminating Lyme disease vectors.

    Look after 1:34 - bird keeping it's eye fixed on the target all the time until it is grabbed. Swirling feathers are another good example how nature can provide us opportunity to learn something in aerodynamics - more than any wind tunnel, and airplanes in it.

    Around 1:25 to 1:35 you can see the air pattern change across the top of the bird. Change in attack angle (bird starts a flare) you can see the feathers go from fairly smooth wind-swept, to swirling around violently across the top. Neat to witness the "stall" across the wing. Only other time i've seen this is watching flight training videos. There is a video available where they attach streamers all over a fixed wing, on stall.. the streamers go from smooth to the same swirl pattern... (no lift generating from the airfoil). Awesome video guys, fantastic! EDIT: Found the video th-cam.com/video/WFcW5-1NP60/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you so much for this Gav. I've managed to persuade the kites to swoop down into my garden and pick up chicken drumsticks but they are down and up so fast I've got no chance of getting a photograph. Amazing birds.

    It would be pretty cool if you were to get an "Aaron's Dragon" and do the hydrogen experiment with it (Fill it with hydrogen... mess around with it a bit, then ignite it!), and film it in slow motion, that would be amazing! Please do it!

    Fun fact a red kite can reach 50 kilometers an hour in just 2 seconds btw not full capability though, just enough for it to catch a bird from 50 yard, it's reactions is so fast that it takes half a second/ 50 milliseconds to spot it's prey while dodging a obstical blocking the view of it's prey

    You know Kites eat meat right? Also feeding birds bread is bad as it expands in their stomach. And....they look nothing like an Eagle, let alone a Bald Eagle LOL.
    Great pics nonetheless.

    Did you know that red kites use the thermal (warm air between mountains or hills) to rise circlingly? As soon as they have discovered their prey, they plunge down almost 200 km / h!

    People are just feeding bacon to these birds? That's a waste of precious bacon! I don't care if you're giving them to birds or something, people could be eaten that bacon and not just children in Africa!

    My only quibble with this vid, is that they are being fed on sliced white bread, which contains very little nourishment. Furthermore, it swells inside their stomachs and inhibits their appetites so that they do not feel the urge to search out the high-protein diet that they need.
    Their natural diet consists mainly of carrion; dead animals that they are able to find, as threy are too weak-footed to kill any prey much bigger than a small rabbit. They will also feed on chicks, small mammals and invertebrates such as beetles and earthworms.

    Gav and Daniel; you should do different emotions in slow motion. Like scared, exited, startled, sad,etc. That would be totally fun to watch

    You wanted to tell something to people and you do it in a WRONG way. Now people hate more about what you believe. Because of this reason your comment here is a sin actually. Because even if there was a hope you have decreased it by pushing people. If you don't know how to do it don't take a responsibility for that. Just take care of your own responsibilities for your religion. P.S. I am a muslim.
