Thought you would Mentioned the black square on the ceiling. When the ceiling was being cleaned/restored from all the black soot they left a squAre uncleaned to show how dirty the ceiling used to be. It is to the right in the corner as you enter GC from the tracks.

Not only is Grand Central not the busiest train terminal in the world, but not even the busiest in New York, with Penn Station actually being busier. The busiest in the world is Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, and 47 of the next top 50 busiest are all in Japan.

Jon..You forgot to mention the hole in the ceiling ( near midpoint) which is a result of a display missile's nose piercing it. This event traces back to the mid 1960's when the USA and Russia were in a cold war. The missile was on show to promote American Space technology . Also, there's a small, black rectangular shape on the ceiling near the south staircase ( opposite Apple store) just at the end of an arc . After having cleaned and restored the ceiling, this black mark was purposely left as a reminder of how pollution from cigarette smoke covered it's entirety.

The Roosevelt tracks and his train car are definitely still there. I also got to see it on the tour I did!
I think the tracks were most recently used for Obama when he was still president.

I have worked for Metro-North/Conrail/Penn Central from 1967until my retirement in 2006; the majority of time worked was in Grand Central Tower service. I have worked in Tower A and Tower C which together comprised the entire upper level. (The upper level loop formerly controlled from Tower F was remotely controlled from Tower A) Given that, I would like to point out that the "presidential car" is a complete fallacy--an urban myth.
To begin with, that particular car resides on Track 65 not 61. (Did Dan Buckner, who is the source of this tale, labeled it track 61 in order to give it the mystique of area 51? Who knows?)
The "armor plated car" is nothing more than a heavy weight baggage car circa 1925; one of which several dozen were built in that era. This car was part of the GCT wrecker. The consist of this was a self propelled (third rail capable) crane and a tool car.
The crane is now on display at the Danbury Rail Museum in Danbury Connecticut and the tool car still resides on track 65--still functioning as a tool car that hasn't been moved in decades.
There is a grain of truth to a VIP platform with access to the Warldorf. This platform is track 53 which is located east of track 65. During my "glory days", this stored M of W equipment and material.
And......just for the record, it is Grand Central Terminal not Grand Central Station.
Reminiscence: When I first hired out I committed the cardinal sin pf saying Grand Central Station. Among the dirty looks and groans, a grizzled old timer came up to me and said "Ehhhh? Lissen, kid. I'm gonna tell you sumptin an yer gonna remember it for the rest of yer life. Grand Central station is a POST OFFICE. Dis here is Grand Central TERMINAL. An don't cha ever forget it".

  • @GIJew

That 1 minute rule isn't necessarily true. I work in the Stationmaster's Office and we'll usually get a radio message that "train X is on the move" about 15 seconds after the scheduled departure time. The doors will usually close promptly upon the clock hitting the scheduled time and leave a few seconds later. The only time they may wait another minute is because of an uncontrolled reason, like a passenger in need of assistance, equipment trouble, etc.

I went to art school in NYC in the late 70s. Grand Central was where I caught trains home. It was filthy and the ceiling was nearly black. On one trip, while I waited for my train, I realized that under that grime was an illustration of the zodiac with lights for stars. What a discovery. I thought it was my personal secret. It's so beautiful now that it's been cleaned. I'm happy to share my secret with everyone!

Sabotaging the power station would NOT have interrupted 80% of troop movements! Those troops were assembled across the Hudson river and upstate in Rockland County NY and left for Europe by boat. There were MANY railroads the soldiers arrived on, probably the minority came through grand central. Those generators probably only supplied grand central and the park avenue tunnel. At the most, to the Bronx.

I hate to be "that guy"- no, wait, that's a lie, I love being that guy - but Grand Central is nowhere close to the busiest train station in the world. Tokyo's Shinjuku Station hold's that record, with 3.5 million people a day. And if you count it by the number of passenger arrival/departures (without including people just visiting the station), Penn Station is actually busier that Grand Central.

    • @HereBeBarr
      @HereBeBarr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You're not that guy at all. Grand Central is the busiest terminal in the world, not station. I should have made that clear, as it's the final stop . I did use the word "terminal" but yes, Tokyo is wayyyy busier overall !

When you say "largest piece of Tiffany stained glass", do you mean single piece, or largest art piece? Because there are larger Tiffany skylights, e.g. the Brooklyn Jewish Center, installed c. 1922. It has since been removed and sold to some synagogue in TX. But those are composed of many smaller segments of glass.

It's Terminal because it's the end of train lines. Same with subway : for example on line 1, Rector St is station, the next, South Ferry, is a Terminal.
