Flashback deserves all the recognition, the acting that Dylan has pulled off in this movie is just insane, this man deserves an Oscar! 🤯💯👏🏻
flashback is the most insane movie i have ever seen. it is so complex and intelligent and it really cool. dylan’s acting is OUTSTANDING as always and i love that this movie plays with the idea that u can exist in multiple realities at once. i love this movie and i can confidently say that this is 100% my new favorite movie.

@@helenadamnjanovic8976 short version: it’s a movie about choices. About how every moment we make a decision it impacts the way our life turns out. The merc / multiverse is simply a vehicle for the message.
But really there are lots of different ways to interpret it. Nobody should watch it simply because they like Dylan O’Brien, he is amazing but these existential crisis / alternate reality movies are definitely not for everyone. This is my interpretation of the story explained chronologically for anyone who had no idea what was going on.

We meet the adult Fred in one version of reality at the beginning.
When teenage Fred is totally flipping out on merc in the squat house, he is experiencing all of the different possible lives he could have, but he can’t control it and is basically od’ing. During that trip he travels to our adult Fred’s ‘current’ time. Scar face appears to our Fred in the timeline we’ve started because he is trying to guide him back to that night in the squat with Cindy so that he doesn’t OD. This is why scar face appears right before the first two flashbacks which both have Fred temporarily coming back to that room with Cindy freaking out telling him to come back to her.
There’s a bunch of other stuff / metaphors / lessons / clues that happen in the middle but for simplicity sake I’ll jump ahead to when the 3 guys go back to the squat house as adults.
This is when he realises he never left that room as a teen and is actually still on merc, he follows the scar face kid and experiences a ton of different realities / times at once (including the ones we saw at the start when scar face first appeared), he freaks out completely and whacks the kid with the lamp in an effort to make it all stop.
But he’s still on merc and experiencing these two different realities (the adult and the teen) simultaneously hence the OD scenes in the bathroom.
Next day he thinks it’s all over but when he freaks out at work / school he realises again that it’s still happening and that he is still simultaneously a teen, an adult, and in that room on merc.
Then he realises he can change what happens by going back in time and changing his choices (which he can only do because he’s still on merc). So he goes back in time a little, leaves work / steals mums car and heads for the squat house, flicking between both timelines to get back to Cindy and the original night at the squat house.
Now he understands what’s happening and chooses to explore with Cindy.
They do this for years, with the beach house / travelling etc whilst in the original teen timeline they are living as bums and hooked on merc, which is what allows them to keep exploring their alternate realities.
It seems he hasn’t really had a relationship with his mum at all (there are no memories or suggestion of any time with her between teen Fred and 30 year old Fred. Every flash of her face he sees are either young or old, not in between)
He visits her as a bum and realises the screaming face he sees when he shifts realities is hers. This is when he decides to live a linear timeline and deal with the highs and lows as they come (breaking the necklace and Cindy saying it doesn’t matter because they can just find it again, represents how choices have more meaning when there are consequences and you can’t just jump to another reality). He also doesn’t want his mum to remember him as the bum version.
So he says goodbye to Cindy and goes back to the time prior to meeting her and consciously chooses the life where he can spend it with Karen and have a relationship with his mum until she dies.
When I say trip I don’t mean like an acid trip. The alternate realities are real, but he needs to keep taking the merc to be able to move around them.
That’s my take anyway. I loved it, and I love that different people can take different things from it but it made perfect sense to me (after a couple of views) and every time I watch it I discover more about the story and change my interpretation slightly.
i just finished watching flashback and all i can say is woowwwww. his acting was PHENOMENAL. hes so underrated and he deserves an oscar for this movie seriously ! i’m so proud of him :’))
That was like the shortest interview ever and so suddenly over, and the clips are kinda distracting. But maybe I'm just nervous because the movie is out now and I'm so not ready for it.. 🤯 But it's always a pleasure to listen to Dylan, that cutie. His reactions to some of the questions, just aw..!

He's such a good person and such a good actor, and like he said in 2014 at Giffoni Film festival, the two things are related; in everything he does, he proves to be the best.
He is so perfect in every role he plays that you couldn't even imagine anyone else doing them.
He knows how to convey the emotions and the feelings of his characters so well that even the viewer can feel them on his own skin.
He deserves the best!! 💙💙💙
