It's pretty cool to see this old video and then see how far he's come since then: his own product line, over 2M followers. Pretty amazing.
Yesterday I did a full wash, clay, and wax on my car. I was able to do all of that correctly because of your videos Larry and I would like to thank you for putting all the time and effort that you put in your videos. A month ago I had no clue about how to clay a car or wax one. But with your videos I was able to. Once again thank you and best of luck to you.
I did just mine yesterday, looks nice doesn't it? I bought a $40 orbital polisher for the wax/polish. Well worth it.
i just clayed the paint on my 02 bmw, it was covered in all sorts of junk, tar and stains.. looks like a new car now after a wax.
great vid ammo nyc
9 yrs later and this video still helping people! Hope you are doing well!
You’ve come a long way, Larry.
I got a clay kit as a bday pressie and did my car yesterday. Can't believe how quick the process is! Thanks for the tips, watched some of your other videos too and they're all very helpful :)
You clay a car to remove contaminants in or "on" the surface of the paint. Waxing is done to "protect" and add shine to the surface. Two very different purposes. Thx again for the comment. -L
True. Good point! Thanks for the comment Nick.

Just did my first detail job today on a 12 passenger E350 van. From a man down the street. It was white in color did the exterior and interior for $50.00. 4hrs to do both. If you think it's easy. Think again. What people make detailing is worth every penny! It felt great to do my first detail. More job's coming. Shawn
Just bought some Griot Clay and I love it! Great value for money and works wonders. Its also a little softer than Meg's or Mothers, so its very easy to work with. For storage, I use a little car wash and water in a spray bottle and mist the clay and knead like every couple months to keep from drying out. Also, you could prob reuse 1 section of clay if your car is not that dirty or maybe if it takes more than one day put the used clay in a ziplock bag and mist the wash solution on it and store.
This vidoe gave me all the answers I needed to begin claying my car, compared to all the other videos. good job.
Yes sir been claying for 20 plus years while washing clay the same time good job
Excellent, no nonsense easy to understand explanation. Great work Larry.
WOW its been 11years already? need a refresher vid on this mate
Really nice videos!
I like your way of not trying to sell stuff but actually give good, honest Information, one doesn't find that every day.
To the Video: I still don't understand how the contaminants don't scrach the paint, even with soap as a lubricant.
Also it would be really nice to see a video-turtorial on how to get a decent look and care for your car without being a professional.
The last question, altough I would understand if you dont answer: How much does detailing a car roughly cost?
Like the bob ross of detailing
awesome to hear that you can use a good quality soap instead of a clay lubricant as thats a great way to cut cost
You are so informative, you make it fun to watch. Thanks for all your vids
You look exhausted my friend! Time to get some rest... Smh you're going to work yourself into the dirt! Jk I love your videos. Keep up the hard work. Much appreciated
I was baffeked as to which clay lubricant to buy, thanks for great advice.
What's the deal with the sound? It gradually faded away completely after a minute?
azurebluemach the contamination makes the noise ,when u clay it -> the contamination gets picked up and the paint is smooth again. That's why the sound goes away.
I hope that makes any sense! Have a nice day!
Larry, why are you making a constipated facial expression when you were rubbing the clay? Does it really require a lot of pressure to clay? I used clay on my car and it was sliding with ease.
haha. No pressure when I use clay bar. The sound of the rough paint is like nails on a chalkboard for me. :)
If it sounded like that, the paint must have been pretty nasty on the surface! I sometimes rub the back of my hand on the hood of my car after washing and am amazed how it ALMOST feels like very fine grit sandpaper!
Every human being have facial expressions, i think his personality is very important to feel what he is saying to us.
Thx Ellery!
I watched this after I had my vehicle clayd. I didn’t understand where all this weird residue was coming from, as I just bought my new 2020 vehicle a couple days ago. It felt like I had just taken it back from the beach. So a guy clayd it and man, the paint and texture of the car is so damn smooth now. Great video to reflect on after the fact of the issue haha thanks!
can you use regular car shampoo with the clay bar to Remove Contaminants ?? or you need instant detailer spray with the clay bar ?
Hi ammos. my car has a panoramic glass roof, can I use the clay bar on the glass. Keep posting videos, really imformative.
Hi Ammos, tried the clay bar on my panoramic sunroof, it worked a treat, many thanks.
Nickhead87 leloodallasmultipass you two have provided me with a good laugh! I hope you both have a great night, happy detailing! #IWorkForLarryToo

can you fix the audio?
edit, not sure if you fixed it or it was my audio... if not, thanks...
It is so worth it!!
howcome the dirt you gather while claying isnt scratching the paint? I guess not all dirt is getting inside clay... some stay at surface while using it.
Hey Larry, been watching your videos over the past few days - I really enjoy them and am picking up lots of tips! One question that popped into my head when you mentioned doing this car in a rush is; roughly how long would it take you to clean and detail a car like the BMW which is obviously covered in paint contaminants & may have scratches/swirl marks from improper washing and day to day wear? I spend days detailing my small car and if I had more spare time on my hands I could spend longer!
Do i need to remove any protective coatings before doing clay bar. Or can I just foam cannon and clay bar
You are an artist! Thanks for the videos, and tips!
Hi. So is it completely safe to use normal car wash as a clay lubricant like you did here? I plan to wash the car, throw out the dirty water, dilute more Meguiars car wash and use that as a lubricant before drying, polishing, and waxing.
How often I need to do this procedure.? Twich per year? Then after claying I need to double wax the car surface? First with sealant two aplycations? And then 2 layers of wax? For extra protection?
Vasileios Petropoulos
Depends on the area you live. Where it’s parked etc.
Clay will strip any protection so yes waxing or sealant is a must. 2-3 coats of any good wax or sealant will be fine. I tend not to mix products. Also wax will not bond to a sealant
Basically, after a good wash, run you hand on the surface (dry or wet) to feel any surface roughness. Claying removes the bonded grit from paint, but in my opinion, doesn’t add to the protection already there from a sealant or wax. Therefore, I wouldn’t bother claying more than 1 per year. The whole process of claying, then iron removing w spray, which is washing the paint 2x, plus a deep cleaning of wheels, then applying a sealant plus a ceramic spray 2x w 24 hour curing over the sealant is like almost a day’s work. And you don’t want to work in the sun so you typically only have a 1/2 day out of the sun to do this. And I have 2 cars, so 1x clay and de-ironing is enough.
Good demo!!
Keep it up!!
Would clay bar be the best thing to remove pine sap??
Hi. I just saw your informative videos and love them. I have a few clay bar questions. I saw that you used soapy water as a lubricant. I was told to use detailers spray. Now that spray is expensive. Why would people say no to the soapy water? Also does clay take away the clear coat?
+thurm101 The only way clay would take off your clear coat is if you had a rock in it. The clay itself is perfectly safe for paint.
Id love to work with you for a few days. You have a knack for teaching. Thank you for all of your videos, I hope you live well and your business goes from strength to strength.
Do you clay every car you "detail" or is it extra? How do you figure what to charge? I'm seriously looking into the auto detailing business, but I have a ton to learn it looks like.
You clay if the car needs it, in another he explains this by comparing claying as going to the emergency room.
Thank you , so you can just use the wash water and soap for lube ?
So you throw away the clay after every 2-3 uses ?? Does the residue you pickup "scratch" the other areas ?
Hi Larry great videos! i have learnt so much since watching your videos and have started detailing cars myself! quick question about claying. if i clay, polish and wax a car, and then a couple of weeks later they wanted it clean again if i have to clay it again does it take of the polish a wax protection ? many thanks jake :)
I have a quick question. First, Great videos. I've always had a passsion for cleaning cars and had no idea i could make a career out of it. Your videos have become like college for me. Second is it possible to buy just the clay. Without having to buy clay kits in hopes to save money.
Do u know a special spray or u can use water and car shampoo? Also can i do the whole car with one clay bar
After removing all contaminants from the car is full hand wax or high speed buffing required? I've heard different answers from detailing shops.
Love all your videos!!
Hey Larry, what are your thoughts on clay mitts?
Can you clean the clay bar after using it or do you throw it away?
will johnson's baby shampoo mixed with water suffice for lubricant?
I clayed my 15 year old car today for the first time. I had some items from Detailers Domain in my online shopping cart but was impatient and got a Mothers California Gold kit locally so I wouldn't have to wait for the online order. The clay didn't get dirty. Was my car relatively clean or was the clay that I got inferior or both or something else?
I'm new to the detailing world but I like my car and would like to take care of it.
How often should I clay?
And how to wash my car when it is waxed so I wont take that wax off?
i use dawn soapy water and it really does the same thing as the clay lubercant.. i even think the soapy water is much better because its kind of annoying having to spray that lubercant all the time. chemical guys says the clay falls apart if i use soapy water but i havnt had a problem with mine.. may i ask what clay you are using? do you make your own?
hello, I was just wondering, once you wash a car, then you clay bar it. but that's the part that confuses me. I remember you saying in one of you videos of washing a jaguar that no matter how good you are at washing that car that there is always dust in the air that happens to land on the paint. so this means that after you wash it, then you clay bar it, so the light debris that would be on the car would be rubbed in the paint causing scratches??????
That's why you only do one panel at a time and keep on folding and twisting the clay as you go along with the car. That way, you won't rub dirt into the paint. Also, make sure to go in up and down/side to side motions, instead of swirling motions so that way, you can completely prevent scratches.
I just bought a new car that has overspray on it from where they repainted a fender after it got dented in the sales lot. it's on the body and the glass. I tried to clay bar but that didn't work, im guessing because it was stuck to the clear coat with no wax in between. My question is, do i have to compound the overspray off, and what's a safe way to get it off of the glass? Black 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth.
Hhhh I like your face when you just getting start claying the car and you feel the dusts is comming out with you
What kind of pressure are you applying with the clay bar? It looks like a fair amount. I was under the impression you should just glide the clay bar over the paint.
You only need to apply minimal pressure on the clay bar to get the results. I let the clay bar do the work and if a light clay bar doesn't pick it all up, then move to a heavier clay bar.
hi Larry, are you putting a lot of pressure while claying? Cause the face you make while doing it makes it looks like so
Hi I was wondering how you prevent microfiber scratches when washing your car and how to make them less noticeable if you alyready have them. if im not using the right word i mean the little scratches that you can only see in some light. also how do you prevent and remove water marks on paint. im picking up a sportscar in a few weeks and i dont want to mess with the paint im without a doubt going to bring it to your shop to get it detailed this summer thanks
2 Mistakes you can make: claying, when it's too cold, or adding too less water, it can cause bad scratches.
Hello. If I clay the car and the clay gets stuck in the car, what do I do!
I will save a lot of money now, thank you.
How is the Griot clay? I'm thinking of buying some because where I live you get way more clay vs meguiars or mothers and its cheaper
The face he makes while detailing is awesome...lol
To remove surface contaminants
Can I clay only the areas that I think it needs (fender flares and side skirts)? Or should I just clay the entire car?
Do dust accumulated in Clay can scratch the paint ?
Are your products available in Australia? Thanks
So like sand in play doh ...how do you clean out grit and dirt to reuse clay or is it one time use !
From what I heard several places says yes. It will remove your wax from the paint so rewax ASAP
Is it true I must wax the car every time I clay the car? and can I just use car soap and water as lubricant? or must I buy lubricant in order to do this?.. I want to do this for he first time but want to do it right and safe for the car paint.. thanks
you shouldn't clay the car that many times throughout the life of the car. If you remove all wax, then clean the car as normal, then clay the car and then wax and seal it properly, you wont need to clay the car. because any containment's will sit on top of the wax and be easily removed with a basic wash. If you are finding you are having to clay the car often then you are parking in a bad spot and may need to park the car in a spot that wont cause whatever is getting embedded.
Thank you, Sir
First time claying and i fucked up bonet full of scratches ... i washed the car, i lubricated the spots that i was working every 5 seconds with water and car shampoo mixture ... one thing im suspicious is i maybe added to much pressure while claying
@AMMO NYC good video Tks 😊
no sound! love the vids but no sound. this has happened a few other times with ammo videos, not sure why
+Colonel Dubois It lost the sound for me too. I paused and dragged the time pointer back to the point it lost the sound and hit play, then the sound was back for the rest of the video. Must be a TH-cam bug in their software.
I just got the Optimum Opti-Eraser (Grey, Aggressive version) and I was wondering.. If I use an aggressive clay/"eraser" on my 2000 Integra that is in pretty good condition but has some oxidation/acid rain in the paint, will I have to do anything other than wash/dry after using the aggressive clay?
i recommend griots clay. it gives you a lot of clay for the same price as the others
What do you do with the used clay? Do you wash it or what?
You fold it and press open it until you can’t get a flat 3 x3 surface that is clean. If you drop it on the ground, it recommended to throw it out because it has grit that will scratch the paint.
How much soap should I use to have a well lubricated clay bar?
i cant see why there would be a too much scenario with soap, just add as much water/soap as the bottle says for washing cars.
hey. I have a white mercedes and unfortunately there are blood stains on the paint that dont go off at all . I tried soap and everything but it didnt come off. do you know what will take off the blood stain? thanks
Dampen a micro fiber cloth with hydrogen peroxide first. Apply to blood and it should *bubble* when the peroxide comes in contact with the blood. Let it sit for a minute or two and if it doesn't remove it with some water or a clean, wet micro fiber cloth, rinse and repeat. This is if it's relative fresh blood, if it's old blood that's been baking in the sun for a while or few years than you might want to invest or rent a buffer (then use 3M medium grit or McGuires compound). I've hit a few deer up here over my years living in New England. And you all thought this was going to end badly. Shame on you....LOL
It shouldn't. I wouldn't let it sit there for any length of time though. Once the hydrogen peroxide hit's the blood and it bubbles for a minute or so, wash it off with soapy water ASAP.
Do you use the clay all over the car ? . and I wanted to know I wash my car but there is still a sign of bird poop on the hood can clay take that out or what would I use
Larry has a video on this channel detailing how to remove bird poop stains - but it's probably something you should practice before trying on your pride and joy as it's fairly advanced. Clay won't get rid of stains in the clear coat if that's what has happened, you will need to go to something more extreme, buffing as a minimum, worst case wet sanding. And yes, if you are claying and haven't done so in a while then it would be a good idea to do the whole car - generally you would only do one area if it had a specific problem like over-spray or some other kind of localised contamination and the rest of the paint was smooth.
emmanuel quiroz If you have access to the equipment it's worth getting an old panel from a wrecker and having a go at it - it's quite fun. I've had a mess around with a rotary buffer years ago and loved it, but quickly decided I suck at it (as I burned through the paint on the practice panel even with an experienced guy showing me!), so I wold leave it to an expert too - but now I've seen the new technology DA buffers and microfiber cutting pads, I'm keen to give them a go as they seem to almost eliminate the risk of stuffing things up. Unfortunately for a good one it's around $400, plus at least another couple of hundred for consumables - and my paint and the paint on my wife's car are pretty good at the moment, so I'll leave it until I feel one or other car needs some special attention.
+emmanuel quiroz I polished mine and they came out about halfway which is good enough for me considering the next step would be wet sanding.
Thank you. I learned a lot.
How many do I need for a full sized SUV?
OMG!!!!! you have the best clay video ever realy man i love yours videos, i whish i have the money to buy all of these stuff for the perfect detail its 10.00PM right here and im gonna wash my car hahah.
What products do you think are good by her price im talking about less expenssive products sorry for my bad english btw
do you use the same piece of clay all over the car , when do you cahnge ur peice of clay
Thanks for sharing brother
thanks I will try that.
what is the point of claying? Better than Waxing?
Why is this so much fun?
That's why you kneed the clay as you use it, also, to do a very dirty car, you'll need many bars of clay to finish a job as a single bar will get dirty quickly and render it useless.
Never go in circles
The daughter of the Mercedes car collector he was working for that day is how I picked it up. I assume he was there to detail a Merc and got asked to do the owners daughters BMW whilst he was there.
You got it! I really appreciate your comments. means a great deal. I'm working on a few new "Ride Along" videos I hope you will like. If you ever have any detailing questions, shoot me an email at my website: AMMONYC.com
Thanks again! -Larry
Nice 👍 Thank you!
A VW dealer once over-sprayed my entire car while they painted their building and didn't take care to move the cars. I spend like 6 hours removing it myself then threatened to sue the dealership and go paid $100. an hour eventually.
When you use clay should you do the hash tag methods
that's true with all forms of washing.
Man you look young Larry
who is this really young man?! 😝 we’re all getting older, Dude. I have to wear special under garments now, so I don’t trip over my own t-sac
Actually, good soap will act as a perfectly good lubricant. The truth is...manufacturers like to sell "lubricants" for clay because its has insane margins and people feel they have to use. Do there "clay lubricants" work...YES. Does quality soap or spray work as well...YES Its sometimes easier to use the products you have instead of buying more. But, there is no right or wrong answer. They all work. Clay lubricant just sounds better and subsequently sells better. Thx for watching!
Was searching around to see which lub to use, then I said let me check you out before I look any further, you answer my question before I even asked it. Thanks for all the good work and info you provide, when I get better on my skills I'll buy your products.
Exactly... this idea helped me so much ... and most amor all Dave a couple bucks
This video has aged sooooo well, Larry. “Clay lubricant” products are just rebranded detail spray!
Personally, I think if you're a one - or two man show and doing low volume, using soap would be more economical.
However, if you're doing high volume with a large amount of staff, it's very convenient to have a clay lubricant that's dedicated, easily accessible and identifiable. It's easier to standardize.
I watched this awhile ago, and was pretty sure you could use soap from a foam cannon as clay bar lube! Glad your video popped up again!!! You're right, quick detailer is insanely expensive!
