  • This is the first part of a series where I am working on my 1952 Model R Diesel. In this part, I disconnect everything from the Pony motor so I can remove it from the main case. I then tear it down to reveal the source of the rear main seal leak.

I have model R myself. Magneto stopped working years ago, never chased the problem down. Pull started it with a 4010 every couple years just to keep it running. I am interested in know more about the magneto system was it complicated? Hard to time?
Your video gives me inspiration to get running properly.

The magneto is pretty simple actually. Yes very easy to time if you look at my video (part 7 I think?) where I reassembled it you will see how to do it. The john deere A and others used the same one actually so parts are pretty easy to come by if you want to do it yourself. Or there are guys that will rebuild for you.

Any chance you may have the specs or drawing for the crankshaft? I contacted the company you sent yours to and they requested a drawing for specs…….I’m rebuilding the pony on my Model R as well….
Keep up the great work with your videos!

I had a 720D and a 730D years ago, the 720 was a pony motor start, the 730 was electric start. I had issues with the flywheel coming loose from the crank shaft, and a flyweight coming off the governor of the 720. That could have been from poor prior maintenance. I think I would add an oil pressure gage to the pony motor, and possibly a bypass oil filter. You will have to determine if there is a port for this. If I remember correctly, both main bearings bolt indirectly to the case, make sure they are not mounted offset to each other. I have dealt with pumps that were .030 out this way with similar results. My pony motor was the V4, its weakness seemed to be the Wico magneto. I used 2 Harley 6v coils to keep it reliable. Have fun

Do you have any ideas where you can find a Fuel sediment bowl for the R\80\820\830 Tractors? I have a 1957 820 and the sediment bowl exploded on me a couple months ago. I've contacted several antique dealers and no luck. Bought one with an IH cross-reference, but the glass is too thick to fit the housing. Ended up making a steel bowl last week, as I want to use the tractor and the pulls are getting close. It seems to be working but I would just like to keep it original if I could. Thanks

When removing the pony engine there is a lifting lug hole in the top of the motor that allows you to lift it with a screw in eye and picks it up perfectly level. Hope this helps someone watching this video.
