    Very detailed explanation !! Thank you so much!! It's the first time I work with ERA5 reanalysis. Question: Exists a limited quantity of download times? Something like you just can download whatever information from Copernicus "cds" a limited times?

    • @climateunboxed
      @climateunboxed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you can ask for the same data repeatedly. If you don't have much local storage this is helpful. Just retrieve when you need... Thanks for the nice feedback

    • @climateunboxed

      I forgot to mention that there is a data limit however. That's why it is useful to learn the API so you can download data in loops. See my other videos to learn how to do this

    hello sir , is there daily data from ERA 5 for temperature or just hourly ?

  • @gus_siles
    @gus_siles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very useful video! Congratulations and many thanks. I've been working with single and pressure levels ERA5 data since last year. More recently, I've been trying to download model level data from MARS servers with the aim of having more tropospheric level information. Do you work with these data? In my experience, it takes a long time downloading for a single site.

    • @climateunboxed
      @climateunboxed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I've worked with MARS a lot, in fact, exclusively before the CDS came out, and especially as I worked in the RD section of ecmwf for 7 years before moving to ICTP (the 5 phase prognostic cloud scheme was my last development for the model before leaving). You are correct that model level data takes a lot of time, is a lot of data! Probably better to download a region and then extract single sites offline in CDO. The other option is to try out the toolbox, although I'm not a big fan since the caching wasn't working too well last time i tried.

    HI sir, I want to download the ERA5 reanalysis global data from 1950 to present.when I trying to download the data it shows data is too large reduce your selection.Then I selected only 10 years but it takes more than 4 hours to download. Is there any other way to get the large data from ERA5. Thank you sir.

    • @climateunboxed
      @climateunboxed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are attempting to download huge datasets and I'm afraid that this will take time. One thing you can consider is to cut down the region to the area of your interest. This can reduce data volumes by an order of magnitude or more... Good luck!

    thank you very much Sir. Is there any way to extend ERA 5 monthly average data on pressure levels from 1979 to present backwards to 1969? My need to get the data starts at 1969.

    • @climateunboxed
      @climateunboxed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YES! :-) there is a beta-release back extension now to 1950, it is available in a separate link while under going evaluation : cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dataset/reanalysis-era5-pressure-levels-monthly-means-preliminary-back-extension?tab=overview
      I hope that helps, and please spread the word about the channel - Recently I've been buried with a heavy teaching load and paper deadlines, but I will be uploading new material soon...

    • @Rainstorm121
      @Rainstorm121 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@climateunboxed Thank you sir. I wish the extension data is just connected to the previous one that ends at 1979. Sure, this channel will be spread by me to my colleagues and I believe it will grow soon. It would be helpful too if you can teach us students the typical analysis that specifically targeting sectoral level. E.g. If I know the coping range of temperature for survival for crop A, then what type of climate analysis should I do to the temperature change in model data (say, present and future data), to detect any significant changes to the survival temp of this particular crop?. In the other words, should we present the information at different risk levels for the decision makers? This is what i called from climate science to services and is still missing from my perspective. A TH-cam video on such would be very very useful. Sorry for my mouthful :)

    • @climateunboxed

      Hi Lee. sorry, somehow i missed this reply. At the moment while this remains beta you need to do a separate download and then merge with cdo mergetime . Regarding your second question regarding surviving temperature, basically this is a question of threshold exceedance and I have a video now in the pipeline for this which I will release soon. The frequency statistics will need this new video combined with my temporal statistics video. If you subscribe hopefully you should get a notification when the masking video is published soon. Best wishes and thank you for the great feedback
