- This was my opinion on the BPT they had on Conroe it had some good and some bad, and maybe an opportunity do do some different things in the future. Before I realized it I need to do a part 2 for sure.

MY PROFILE:
I started fishing when I was just a young kid and instantly fell in love with Bass Fishing. Started fishing tournaments when I was in high school and have been fishing them ever since. For years I fished every tournament I could enter sometimes fishing as many as 45 tournaments a year. I qualified for the Elites when I was 30 but didn't have the sponsors or money to compete so I turned it down. Got sponsor support later and fished the FLW Tour for 2 years and having been fishing the Toyotas since 2006. I’ve won 5 Angler of the Year Titles becoming the only fishermen to have more than 3 AOYs in the Toyota series. Won numerous events along the way that has helped shape my way into working for Strike King as head of product innovation. Along the way, I picked up a camera and started filming my endeavors. As a viewer I appreciate the 3 trails are all on different formats and rule packages. Each have their pros and cons. I will say mlf format keeps my attention through the final day better because it’s wide open. A lot of elite tournaments are over before final day begins.

I love watching the MLF anglers channel and then immediately coming to yours. It's true, they absolutely forgot how to catch fish.
Great videos and while I usually agree with your points, they’ve gotta fish the format they’re given. In 22 or 23 they did biggest 5 with their CWR format and too many people complained. With this format of Every Fish Counts, it’s more beneficial to catch 15 2 pounders than it is to try to catch 5 4 pounders. If they went back to best 5, people would just complain again. Never gonna make everyone happy
I watched and you're totally correct. Those guys caught nothing the 2 periods without. I looked at 4 main FFS guys and after 2 days it was 79 bass with and 12 total without. Crazy
One add.... MLF's #'s tracking will skewed because. Take Gill and Wheeler, they caught 52 pounds in 1st periods with FFS then practiced for 2 periods because made the cuts in periods 1. Maybe only track for last day because those #'s would be legit for with and without because they are trying to win on last day when everything zeroed. Just a thought.
I used to live on Conroe…. The lake has giants but being able to weigh less than 16” fish blows my mind…… MLF has this big thing about taking the lake length limit and average weight for that length fish is the “ variable” minimum…… so how they settled on 1.5lbs for this tourney is beyond me…… it should have easily been 2-2.5 lbs……

Loved the coverage. A good blend of techniques. I think going to one period helped the really good scopers even more.

Tours should all be 5 fish. Especially on a lake full of big ones. That would have been a completely different tour if it was 5 heaviest fish. I was happy to see the drastic contrast of fish caught with and without FFS.
I love the idea of MLF breaking down and posting the stats for each tournament!
And, I totally agree about scoring keepers. That's my only beef with MLF since the beginning. When they come up here and fish Lacrosse, well over half the fish are not keepers according to state regs.
They do record every fish caught online under the anglers name. You dont need them to break down periods because you can tell what period they scoped. just look for jig head minnow for lure type.

I personally was just happy to see that it wasn’t just me, and that even high level anglers and more experienced anglers struggle on Conroe. The SJRA could do a lot to help that lake both from a silt level and a grass level if not for the HOA’s. I totally agree with you Todd that the 1lb 10oz bass being weighed was a little disingenuous. But I think had they had a weight limit congruent to the average 16” largemouth on Conroe it would’ve resulted in far less fish catches and therefore far less excitement or participation from the public, which is the overall goal of any community bringing the national tournaments to a lake. It’s really a lot more akin to your city or county bringing a small carnival to town to setup shop in your local strip mall than anything else. Conroe can be fun but it can be cruel and I think they missed on highlighting that.

Similar issue to dealing with the slot at Fork. Bassmaster went to catch, weigh and release for Fork tournament to make it more fun and interesting. Any lake with a slot can be frustrating. Many people will not fish Fork for that reason. Hate to throw back a 23” 8 pounder.
Same. I’ll fish Fork and Bois’d arc for fun but fishing a tournament for unders sucks.
I've never heard an angler say on day 4 of a tournament, damn, I wish the whole field was fishing against me. The winner still beat everyone in the tournament. Don't care for the zeroing the weights, but it is what it is. More than I circuit to fish.

@toddcastledinefishing5924 I remember people leaving fish because they needed to save them for days 2-3 because you could only keep 5 each day and the school was only a certain class of fish. If you are going to score them all then you should absolutely be able to count them all for the full tournament.
Todd, I am with you about the stats and that was the first thing I went to look at when I opened the web site. I wanted to know who caught what with FFS and who caught what fishing without it.

I totally agree and I watched a lot of it. If a slot size is 16 inches, they should weigh that of an average of 5 fish that are 16 inches and make that the slot “weigh” size for that tournament. Only because BPT has the “all” weight instead of best 5. But that’s “their” rules for their (BPT) tournament series.
I would also like to see the format Change for a day, one day “their, all you catch” format, to the five fish format; I’d love to see the weight differences for the top five of each day… interesting 🤔 !!!!
Then third day, a fish off and the leader gets to pick the format!
Did you read Cody Meyers post after the Leech Lake BASS Open last year? He credits his strong finish to offshore FFS pressure pushing fish to the bank for him. Interesting take but maybe a stronger correlation will be made this year with the MLF format.

My take is eventually the DNR is going to put the brakes on all this bs. They will have to if they truly care about the resources.

The big mistake I think MLF made was the 1 lb 8oz minimum weight for a keeper. If they had made it 2 lb the field would have been a lot closer and decisions on baits and techniques would have been more important. Now more strategy and willing to gamble come into play. Also maybe leaving the FFS area to go off the map to get a few big bites would happen. I think less keepers and bigger bites helps level the playing field FFS vs Non FFS.
It wouldn't be MLF if the rules didn't completely change every year... lol
I was able the see this event up close, living in the Conroe area. I truly like the format and i wish the other trails would follow suit in some way. I do think you beat the full field, because you beat them to the cut line.
Todd, some of / many of them were not great fishermen without FFS. I heard one say he has been fishing with FFS since he started fishing and you never see him fishing without his face stuck to the screen, no way that guy would be a top-ranking fisherman without FFS. Will not happen but if they would ban FFS in all tournaments for 2 full seasons, that would separate real skilled fishermen from hopeful fishermen that call themselves "professionals".

Same here sir, it bored the hell outta me!! It’s kinda like my buddy and I. He throws a Ned to catch 20 1lbrs and I’m firing big glides and jigs trying to catch the biggest fish that wants it. All in all…FFS is boring for the TV spectator.
Didn’t realize Lake Conroe had a 16” limit so I tend to agree with you. A 1 lb 8 oz score-able doesn’t come close. Maybe MLF stands for More Little Fish.
After reading the comments, there will always be suggestions on how a tournament should be run. I guessing there is a minimum length (16") and not a slot on Conroe.
I wish i could watch todd, but damn it takes him 20 minutes to say what should take 2 sentences. His takes are fairly entertaining but damn!
Ive said it a hundred times online, 75% of those fish weren't keepers on conroe. It was actually worse than we expected. Kyle, Ben and I all thought they would have weighed way more 5-7s. Those livescope fish have been there since October but NOBODY is fishing for them because they aren't keepers.

2 Lb minimum shoulda been the standard. Other than that it was a great watch! I hate that scoping is allowed at all, but the blended format brings a unique twist. As an anti scoper, I simply loved it! I totally agree with you! Many anglers are gonna get exposed regarding the lack of “traditional” fishing skills! That’s what brought an interest as well! Choosing the cheater box period is also an interesting dynamic! IMO I have NO interest in the Scopemasters Sportsman’s Society this year! The BPT, for now, has my interest because it’ll show who’s the best all around angler with some scope and mostly traditional fishing!
Who cares if they were non keepers thats not the format they use . Thst was the best toirnamemt ive seen in a long time . The ending was one of the best in a long time . They crushed them and put on a helluva show . 2 different styles of fishing .

I feel the same way about the keepers. They are weighing non keepers in our tournaments but it’s okay for them. It’s the same on lake fork for the elites they can keep everything and show how great the lake is but I go fish a tournament and have to throw back 6 pounders but keep a 10in fish

I get it that MLF chooses weight because they need TV content for the shows
But I personally believe the BPT wants to do catch and release; it should adhere to the state and or lakes size rule first and foremost.
If they catch a legal length fish; then they can weigh it and record the weight into their score tracker.
It's funny that your main gripe with MLF/BPT on Conroe was the format itself (large numbers of small fish to win, stages, zeroing out etc), which has been the main divider of Bassmaster and MLF all these years regardless of ffs. You're right though the different formats of all the bass trails are an inadvertent experiment. Hopefully they do have someone keeping all those statistics, as they definitely would be useful for fish management assuming the people running MLF care about such things and had forethought. Have to disagree about the classic field thing. It's not a cakewalk to fish a whole season well enough just to get there for a chance to win it. If your argument is only tournament winners from that season should be in the classic because they beat a large field, and anglers in on points or exemptions don't deserve to hold that Classic trophy, well I look forward to that video. It would be an interesting idea for sure. Thanks for the food for thought. Hope your next day out on the water is a great one and keep having fun!
I've been saying all along that if you take ffs away, especially the young guns, you probably wouldn't hear from these guys again! The young guys have known no other way to catch fish! They are extremely good with ffs but they spend no time fishing old school!!
Man the expression you hit the nail on the head has never been truer since you made this video!! Even when we fish Wednesday night mason jar tournaments, we may catch a 12-inch fish just to fill a limit, trying to get rid of them ASAP! Half the time my cousin won't even let them in the boat, if we catch one that weighs a pound and 12 inches stretching the hell out of it he'll throw it back in the water. Me too!! To watch them catch those size fish over and over and over again and get accumulated weights for that size fish is hilarious to me. What does that say about the sport and their organization is what I want to know! But anyway, stay safe out there, watch out for the idiots,! ✌️
Todd, I'm sure most of the fisheman would rather it be a 2lb minimum as well. Your animosity toward them is unfounded! The sponsors and owners of the series set the rules and the competitors fish by them. The sport has had dwindling viewership for years and they are searching for the right combination to make it sucessful again. It is about trying to catch (no pun intended) new viewers and the casual channel surfer. Maybe you are smart enough to know this and your post was just a way to get some hits on your channel. TH-cam seems full of hate mostly directed in the wrong direction. Maybe your viewership will follow along and hate with you on the Elite Series Anglers rather than those responsible for setting that stupid minimum.
I watched 15 min of period 1 and 2. I watched 90 min of period 3 when only 1 guy was scoping and he finished last. The last 15 min was great, chatter bait vs a lipless I believe. I agree that the minimum weight should be at least 2 lbs. Will watch anytime its not staring at a screen dominated.
Quick release is the way to go.

But Todd, Boyd Duckett says anlgers don't fish any different for big fish than they do little fish. He would never lie to us😂 I can't stand guys not targeting the bigger fish in a system. "Big" doesn't need to be 10 lbs. It could be 4 lbs depending on the system

Im good with your opinion cause it's yours. You did say "keeper" a lot. Nobody kept fish....they were all released immediately. I know you know that and your point I believe is comparing it to a "5 fish limit" format. Maybe a 2lb min. would've made it easier for you. So I think you want to talk about traditional versus ffs or traditional versus all you can catch format. I believe most of us were raised on traditional 5 fish limit, full field, and no ffs. So naturally it is what we will always compare everything else to. Fyi Im 67 with 45 years bass fishing I have ffs and I watched nearly all of it live.
One of the reasons I don't watch was mentioned below. Use LS in the first period and load up on smaller fish to get their weight up and then ride around for two periods more or less practicing for more LS areas to fish the next rounds.
I think they were weighing none keepers to make it seem like the fishery is thriving. It makes the weights look good.
They get a pass on length limits just like BASS does on Fork
What makes the 80% of fish being caught with FFS vs without more interesting, is that more than 66% of the fishing was without FFS. Nobody could use it more than 33% and some never turned it on. Tells a BIG story
I think bass should follow suit . Don’t allow it first two days then if make the cuts you can use it 3rd and 4th day or just 4th
I struggle like hell on Conroe. I've caught some nice ones from time to time but I have gone many times and might not catch 2 bass all freaking day out there. I think it's a tough lake, super pressured.
So what do you think about the study that was done in Alabama i think, that says all the fish die after you release them? I find it hard to believe myself but they did study it and claim it is so. You think its propaganda?
Totally false. No one that tournament fishes believes that. Like I said how come some of the best places on the lake are release areas. When you do catch a fish there they all used to have cull ring holes in them.

In south Louisiana there is a boat launch that has 100 to 200 boat tournaments in June, July August. I fish by the release area a day or two after the tournaments. Have never seen more than a hand full of dead fish after these big tournaments.
Love 95 %. Full field. Are elites full field? They have 2 cuts in their 4 days 🤷♂️ curious. So dos BPT. 2 cuts 4 days.
Pretty soon on boulder non-voter tournaments. They’ll have a live scope in the back of the boat as well.
Speaking the truth. I don’t like every fish counts. I think it should always be the 5 biggest combined weight. I’ve said it before, watching people fish is boring but watching someone catch a beast of a fish is where it’s at.
@@BassHead1322 I used to think that way, but football doesn’t stop after 5 tds, basketball doesn’t stop after 5 baskets etc….. it’s to score as much as you can……
@ but NASCAR is the fastest and weightlifting is the heaviest. Not saying it can’t be enjoyed it just not the format for me. We all enjoy days when we catch large numbers but we usually hope for a PB each time.
For me, the little non-keepers “counting” is kind of like watching an NFL game where each team automatically kicks a field goal as soon as they get to the 20 yard line….never going for a touchdown. Yeah, 10 field goals will win a lot of games, but it would be pretty boring if nobody was even attempting to score a touchdown.
Also…the effect FFS has for co-anglers is sad. I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and one of my “bucket list” things is that I wanted to fish as a co-angler in a pro tournament. I wanted the experience, and to learn and check that off my bucket list. But because of FFS I’ve pretty much let go of that dream, because sitting in the middle of the lake in bad position to catch any fish doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend my limited days.
I’m not necessarily against FFS or technology…. I’m just being realistic about some of the consequences of it.
LOL! The word "keeper" has something to do with "keeping" the fish- which they don't do, thankfully. Many people feel the same about the bucket brigade hauling fish around all day and dumping them in a marina at the end of the day (also known as a "retread factory'). We shake our head at people still doing that in 2025.
I wonder also if mlf could see the ratings from all 3 periods and see which period had the most viewers tuning in.
This isn’t necessarily a new thing with MLF. I forget the year and who won back when MLF got started (the first couple of years) there was a tourney on Table Rock with a 1lb minimum. The length limit on table rock is 15 across the board (which I know you know since you fish there😉) the winner of that tournament fished a bridge pole loaded with 12-13 inch Kentuckies, catching em one after another and hardly (if ever) catching one that was legal to keep.
I’m with you, I think it’s totally unfair to zero the weights, the guy who crushed them the first 2 days and built up a good weight just to have his weight zeroed out on the last day and then can’t catch them on the last day then the guy who barely made the cut finds the motherload on the last day and wins seems like a slap in the face to the guy who should have won it if he got to carry his weight over .
What does everyone think about Wheeler? Can he win an AOY without it? I think he can and will. It was interesting though very interesting. He has proven he can without it not insinuating his success is do to the tech. I am more interested in the these guys have all have been using it for the most part for a while. It definitely has to play with your head from a strategic standpoint and not in a good way
Jacob Wheeler is the best fisherman of his era. Just look back at his track record before Forward Facing. He is a hammer no matter what you think. Look at what he did down in Australia and New Zealand in the off season. He had never even fished for the species and went down and won.
Totally agree first they need to make 2.5 count or 3 just so they have to fish for bigger fish. I know they are trying but these guppies tournaments are still horrible to watch.
I like the format of only using FFS for part of the day and fishing the rest of the day. But I think that they should put a limit on how many fish count on their limit. Maybe say their 20 or 25 biggest fish for that day. Not every fish. I think that would keep the ones that are not as strong with FFS closer to the pack. And they would fish for the bigger fish not just the dots that are on the screen.
I was done with the MLF when they had the Cayuga tournament out of season in NY. Several states up here NJ, NY and PA recently allowed catch and release fishing for bass during the closed season. PA and NJ specifically stated that you can not have a tournament during the catch and release period. NY didn’t specify and MLF took advantage of that so they could fish for Small Mouth during the spawn. I don’t know how much experience you have sight fishing Smallmouth but they are the easiest fish in the world to catch. You can catch one through it back and catch it again and again and again and again!

@@edwardcowan7012 Catching a fish on a dock is one thing, but bed fishing is totally different. Is that one of the major differences between MLF and BASS? Have you witness this? Did you report this to the TD (if you were there)?
What it did is just confirm how powerful the ffs tech is and how easy fishing is now for those that know it well. Not hating, it's legal to use so have at it, but there is just no other way to see it.
That said, I watched that tourney more than any other BPT the last couple years, and was glued to parts that showed people fishing without it. I want the intuition and anticipation of a bite, even more than the bite itself. Which is the fundamental arguement of ffs vs no ffs. Are you a fan of watching fishing or you only care about catching. No right or wrong answer, but those are the choices.

Can I challenge y’all on something? Based on the data, what could have been changed about the limits placed on ffs that would have let the low performing scopers to win? Other than not counting any of the “scope used” fish at all I don’t think you can. The scope guys beat the non scope guys if you let them use it at all. Maybe let them use it for ten minutes?

You not wrong on how they forgot to just go and fish.
Seems to me, the rules should change based on the lakes slot. If Conroe is 16", they shouldn't be able to weigh a fish that is under 16". Just my opinion.
All the things you said are pretty much why I’ve never had much interest in the MLF stuff, FFS or not. Always just seemed like some sort of exhibition series during the off-season of the real tours.

Still takes the box lots of times to win 5 fish derbies. MLF is not helping it's self with the baby fish weighing. Huge difference in fishing for quality fish over the dinks.
I have watched BASS MASTERS tourneys, their minimum length is always 12”, and the pros weight them in and some of them weighed 14 ozs. Now which is worse, 14 ozs or 1 lb mininum??? You people need to get your heads on straight!!! What is good for one tour should be good for all tours in my opinion!! The only BASS MASTERS don’t use the 12” limit is when they fish LAKE FORK!!!

I felt the same way as to why are non keepers score able. A 16” should weigh 2-2.25 lbs. The BPT should stick to lake regulations they are fishing on. It was a struggle for non-scoping periods.

Kvd new show awesome imo, anyone knocking him for everything he explains as it pertains to using the sonar, haven’t heard anyone knock Kevin show. Tournaments yeah ban it but don’t blame the young guns. They all struggled without it except a few.
Interesting comment about the fish caught on FFS could have hurt the conventional fishing because they don’t bite if they do move up. Would be cool if mlf started tagging all the fish caught just to see how many fish are caught more than once.
Bummer. You would think a bass tournament would use state guide lines for fish to be weighted in. That being said, there have been times I'd love to catch a bunch of 11/2 lb bass.
There is no law/rule stating you can't catch an under size fish. None were kept. You need to remember, the casual viewer doesn't care about size/limit. Just numbers caught.
To me it's a pure format issue. By resetting the weights it will look the same every time people will run out early with ffs first period then take the rest of the day off. Makes bad viewing when best anglers quit after 2 hours of the day.

the dude caught a fish last 45 seconds to win 1st place it was exciting finish. MLF has the best format in pro fishing rn.

I will say, where I lived in Conroe, in about 2 weeks I could win a one day tourney with bed fish….. lol

@@toddcastledinefishing5924 it might could go down this weekend,,,,, I lived in the cove with the lighthouse and caught my pb there off a bed…. Weighed 10-4….. I caught 5 for 32-9 that day just fishing…. No tourney!!!!
