I've never been good with my eyeballing things and for me it is much easier to drill a hole in the center of the end cap, insert a pin with into that hole and then solder it in place. Makes my life much easier...
I always appreciate when someone shows the mishaps and then how to recover from them. My day job is as an historian, and I always share mistakes and process with my students. When all one sees is the end result, or the process that works perfectly the first time, then it's easy for students to get discouraged -- or never start at all.
