Who doesn't love ukuleles made on the amazing tropical islands of Indonesia. Indonesians have a great music culture which goes back a long time with features like Gamelan Orchestras. They have plenty of good wood available at a lower cost and excellent wood workers as well. Some of the woods are not well known in the rest of the world. Starting in the low price ranges with Mahalo Ukuleles made in Surabaya all the way through a range of instruments to the Olis made just under 500 miles away in Bandung shown in this video. It would be interesting to see HMS take a look at the technology and sound of the current ukulele industry in Indonesia, just so your customers can see the sub-$500 and or $200, even the sub-$50, product to compare with the Chinese product that is being marketed in the USA Market. Of course here in Australia, we can already access a range of great instruments made in Indonesia.
We had problems with other factories in Jakarta years ago. Things change and advancements are made but at this point Genta is like family to me. They're musicians and luthiers. Most of these companies... you're dealing with businessmen. There's talent within but it's a colder experience and details aren't appreciated or understood (just my experience). Plus I don't think I could handle making a cheaper line because it would frustrate me too much. 100% on Indonesian culture and people! (not to mention the food!) My friend Roger might be bringing the 'Oli line to Australia so hopefully you can try them out soon. Mahalo!
Fantastic playing, Matt! Happy to see you make it back to HMS HQ. Great lineup of ukes, Andrew-got my eyes on the Spruce Waru baritone.
I love the mahogany soprano!
I'm excited for you these oli's are going to be well received at theNAMM show can't wait to see the L2 limit editions/tone wood combo's coming 2025
