Great advice ,......I'm new to the sport , just got my A at 61,.......I was reading your book during my first training and it was an inspiration to learn to fly. A lot of what I do each skydive is straight from the philosophy and mindset that I was inspired by in your story. Thanks for the inspiration , I have some near future goals and I know that we can achieve them ,.......old guys , flying around like we dreamed about when we were kids ,....I'm loving it !
Great presentation! I had my first jump in '81. I have never had a reserve ride, but I have always been a regular in the training harness -- despite the ridicule and laughter of many other skydivers (most of them more experienced than I was). If everybody would listen to BC, we wouldn't need fatality reports anymore. One reason I've never had to go to my reserve -- I ALWAYS pack my own main.
Well said! Very good wake up call for a lot of skydivers, I have been 6 years in the sport with only 122 jumps, which is nothing, and still acting like passing my AFF licence. Safety first as with everything. Look, locate, cut away, reserve, arch is drilled in my head. Every single skydive I practice three times before I exit the air craft. All ways have the plan and follow it never change during the flight. And of course have a B plan! Be safe in the sky!
Like Dan, I made my 1st jump over 40 years ago. But I only know what I know so when somebody like DBC talks about safety, I'm listening real carefully; you should too. Complacency almost buried me 17 years ago; after 500+ jumps on a cross-braced canopy, I thought I had it "dialed in". The truth is, my Velo was flying me, not the other way around. Know your limits, stay current, get coaching, attend Safety Day and ask lots of questions. There are no dumb questions when it comes to safety. It's better to be the "conservative kid with the big rig", than the "cool kid with the microdot container who is walking on crutches".....my 2 cents. Be safe y'all! Michael

Shout out to Skydive Perris! Dan is still there. He pulled me aside to help me with my rsl after I did my first hook up of my canopy and risers to my container.
I am trying to get back into flying airplane s and get my Piolets license and i did a tandem jump omg! Best experience ever! I watched every fatalities video and skydiving gone wrong the night before, i was pretty shook up. But as soon as i got into the plane i felt absolutely calm and accepted my fate. Once we jumped i was surrounded by a glowing ball of love....crazy as that sounds. Yes Air is scary. But i really love flying and now jumping out of airplanes..
Dan, among many other things, good stuff at 13:03...id est., if you've landed, BUG OUT of the LZ. NOW! Nothing worries me more than being on final and seeing campers in the landing area! We KNOW you're excited about the jump and want to chat about it but kindly contain your enthusiasm until you are safely out of the LZ. There are others above you who still need to land safely... I've had to shout "HEADS UP!" many times when on final. Thanks!
if we underestimate our readiness and overestimate risk we are on the only rational mind statement and we know what to do; do not skydive; its serious risk of losing live; other way: we are commiting suicide jumping from aircraft and trying to save our lifes under parachutes (main or reserves); we are putting at risk our lives for NOTHING aka 30 - 50 secs of freefall; OK - nothing is similiar to freefall experience but its only past experience; it ends and there is nothing - adrenalin??? maybe; but, who has more infos than someone, who think about things, survive more than 30000 jumps and is in sport from 1980.. lot of time... lot of... sorry wasted time; this is my opinion after 12 yrs in this sport and 750 jumps, three stupid cutaways and 29 saved lifes after good reserve packjobs; not too much, but I was thinking everytime, when I sat to aircraft.. what the hell am I doing here :( thanks God.. im idiot.. be safe, good luck

what an incredible saying "there's no safe skydiver, only a safe skydive". Puts the onus on the jumper to prove he is safe every jump
