I fell even more in love with this song when I heard Bootsy say on a documentary that him and his brother and the Pacemakers played what would become this song during a lunch break the James Brown Band was on, although they did not play on this track because the original band came back from their lunch break and played on the original track, it’s something to know what would be the J.B.’s two years later started in the studio that day while the original band was on there lunch break. Bootsy said Mr Brown worked with them on this song while the original band was on their lunch break, that’s something right there, would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall during that jam session.

I first heard this jam in the late spring/ early summer of 1968. That was a very turbulent time all across the nation. I turned 10 that July of '68, as I recalled JB'S music was very UPLIFTING for the black community coast to coast, such as "Say It Loud I'm Black And I'm Proud!" Many people may not be aware of this, but JB pulled a few strings, etc...and managed to get a tour to Vietnam to entertain our nation's finest.... America's service men and women. MY Dad arrived in country in March of '68 and was assigned to B Co 3rd Bn 47th Inf. 9th Infantry Division....they were a part of the Mobile Riverine Force, and their duty was to patrol the muddy water ways and rice paddies of the Mekong Delta In closing, I want to give THANKS and PRAISE to James Brown for being a TRUE PATRIOT, who LOVED his GOD and his COUNTRY and ALWAYS showed his APPRECIATION by singing songs that reflected such, and taking time out of his busy schedule to go visit the troops.

I bought the 45 single when I was 13, and I still have it.
Many years later, when I played guitar in bands, I actually sang and played it a few times, even though it was out of my singing range.
But I loved the groove so much that I insisted on trying.
It’s one of my top three favorite JB songs, and it’s one of his most unique songs in terms of the rhythmic pattern being laid down by the drummer.
Not at all typical. It’s got a Latin flair that’s hard to define.
It’s just too bad that he performed it so infrequently on stage.
