    my huge seed collection is organized by type in ziplock bags, i put those ziplock bags inside of different bags in a contained space in my refrigerator. COLD AND DRY. i dont have anywhere to grow food yet so im preserving them until then. it makes me happy to collect seeds for everything i want to grow. theyre the only things i can collect for my farm before having it.

    As a first year gardener I dont have many seeds to store so I have them in paper bags.
    And you're right I will expand my collection next year so thanks for the tips on how to store them!

    Thank you for sharing. I find what works for me is to use a calendar and write in each week what needs to happen each week in way of planting. I've used this system for 35 years. I keep all of my seeds in alphebetic order in a couple of boxes. I also have a garden plan that I stick to each year. Of course I rotate the crops every year. Thank you for sharing.always glad to share more if interested. Take care

      Some people say that never changing is boring. I guess for me boring works. Lol. Always here to help

    it's the same here. I made my second storage method this past spring.
    For planting time I have an excel file with my list of plants and when to set them.

    very good information. Never thought of this. I have a lot of seed and I need to do better with storage

    Congratulations, you're so well organised!
    Until this year all of my seeds have been stored in a variety of old biscuit tins. I keep these in the shed and being in the tins means the local mice can't pop in for a free nibble.
    However, it's mayhem once I've opened the tin and they all spill out. So I bought a large metal cabinet, the sort of thing they used to have in my local library with card indexes. It has five drawers and I'm going to collect all the types of seeds together in envelopes. I'm preparing this at the moment and the kitchen floor is awash with hundreds of seed packets.

    I like to arrange the seed packs on a table and take pictures on my phone, so if I'm out I know what I have.

    thank you for your tidy tutorial...seeds and chaos are more my mantra (not intentionally)...as i sit at my kitchen table, i see a 'catch all' coffee mug with a packet of california poppy seeds poking out...hope things are better for louis...

    I don't go by expiration dates anymore. I have planted seeds 6,7,8 years old that still grew.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a lot of seeds can germinate WAY past their expiration dates. Those dates are the last time you can expect really good germination from all the seeds in a packet. After that point, the percentage of seeds that become duds increases.

    Hi Tanya, very useful video, glad you mentioned the parsnips, etc, which are always slow to germinate and chucking out the out of date seeds. FYI, I have my seeds sectioned by type in a papier maché open topped file box and a garden diary of when to sow with space to make notes on each plant. That sounds super organised, doesn't it? Hah! I still manage to miss sowing dates so I think I'll be adopting your second method of storage. I like that the boxes could be moved around by month to be sown ... Caro x

    I can only grow small amounts of each type of seed so this system will do me just fine. I need some sort of calendar to detail what and when to better plan ahead and be prepared.

    Thank you for sharing your idea for seed storage. I used your other method this year but I will definitely be trying this method when I get some boxes as I don't have take aways. I also use a spare cheap calendar where I write the name of the seeds to be sown and note when I have sown them. I find that very useful as I can't rely on my memory 😂 happy Halloween 🎃

    My seed storage is the most disorganized it has ever been. Right now they are in the packages they arrived in and I have to get organized again over the winter.

    I like the way the flowers look behind you in the beginning of the video...do you have a video on how you planted it? Did you mix veggies and flowers? Did you sow them close?

    🥬🥬🥬Clear snap top plastic box. Have stiff paper dividers with categories. I buddy up same seeds into a single package. I write the year big in marker on the front so I know which to sow first or sow heavily if I think germination could be an issue. I keep plant labels and a sharpie marker in the box (have learned to mark the row straight away...to prevent sowing something else in my zest to grow). The box comes with when I plant.🥬🥬🥬

    I organise my seeds based on major types (fruit, vegetables, herbs and other), being sure to rehome damaged packets in envelopes. On top of this, I use an online service to figure out sowing and planting dates. It isn't a perfect season but it is the one that works for my particular situation. Now, if I could only get the local bush turkeys to stop wandering into the yard and digging up my vegetables... :-(

    A binder or photo type album would be an idea too to organize them with tiny clips to hold the packets closed

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve tried that, however, it only works well if you only have a relatively small amount of seed packets. They’re thicker than you at first imagine and fill album so full that it doesn’t close properly. The pages stack in an awkward way too because of the different thicknesses

    • @jentrevors
      @jentrevors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my goodness yes the binder would be quite big haha I never thought of that
      I went today and bought some containers and a basket like you have , you inspired me 💓 I grew up watching and helping my dad with his big beautiful vegetable gardens and strawberry fields , but now that I have my own home I want to really get organized try this on my own ... thank you for the beautiful videos

    Maybe you can add an agenda/calender with the last method or otherwise you don't know when to sow or first open all of the boxes and read the packages....

    I have all my seeds in a shoe box in the basement. When I use a pack, I am like you, put them in a different holding container. When I am done, they go back in he shoe box.

    I've been looking at storage with 20 or 24 mini pullout drawers, but the drawers are not quite the right size. Thanks for sharing your tip, it's great to reuse these takeaway boxes. Great idea!
    Are you sti using this method to organise your seeds? Or have you modified your approach?

    What do you include in the category "greens" and what do you keep in the "salad greens" ? :)

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my greens category goes any edible leafy green that can be cooked. Salad greens are edible greens that I eat raw. It's a very personal division of vegetables that may be different for other people.

    But how do you save or use seeds according to the date on the package. How long can you keep seeds? Does it matter if they are from your garden or a friend, or bought?

    I'm the worst. I have seeds all over the house and out in the shed. No organization at all. Come spring i just muddle through and go buy more seeds. For 30 years iv'e been saying i'm going to get them all together and get a system. Not going to happen. i know myself to well!!!!
