  • We're trying to grow sweet corn in our raised beds this summer. We've chosen a variety called Troubadour and planted three beds in a row for better chances of good pollination.

    I did square foot gardening with corn this year. I have 68 stalks in my 8x4. It is 9 feet tall, and almost each stalk has two ears.

      Did you plant 2 corn plants per square foot? I’m doubling my garden beds next year and was wondering what spacing I should use for my corn.

    I am liking the format of question and answer. I’m a new gardener so this is very useful for me. Thank you for posting!

    I grew one stalk, in partial shade. Didn't think it would pollinate itself. It was a little windy that year, but it gave me two ears.

    Of course you can! I've grown corn in raised beds for more than 15 years. The only problem I had was the stalks blowing over. I solved that problem by installing a horizontal trellis.

      @playdiscgolf1546 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would make total sense to trellis, if you have a smaller garden. I’m doing it just for safety, especially after that recent storm we had!

      Is it difficult to pick, being so tall

    I’m doing corn in raised beds for the first time this year… an adapted SFG. So far they are taller than I expected. Hopefully we’ll all have some corn…

    It does works I have 80 in my bed sweet corn !

  • @nodripsman
    @nodripsman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Definitely a BIG concern is the likelihood of it being trashed by storms and blown over..can trellis one side and crate a wind break and support.

    I've done it this year first time raised bed. 5 x 10 18" deep about 40 plants in the block. Bantam 12 row..it all silked and pollinated beautifully , should be ripened for pickings any day. Zone 7 Philadelphia. 88 DTH.🌽🌽 looks like a couple ears for Heirloom variety per.

    Will be interesting to see how it does. I grew baby corn in a slightly raised bed last year and it did okay but this year I'm growing it in a deeper,15", bed and hopefully it does better. Good luck! 😊

    🌽 will grow anywhere, just about one of my gardening Buddies is growing, believe it or not in a dumpster corn. My buddy is really into using recyclable items, for gardening.

    You're going to need a ladder to harvest them. But, I'm sure the will grow just fine.

    I grew a plot that was 9x10 and i got over a hundred ears of corn. Enough for me to last until the next fall harvest plus share with my neighbors. You dont need much space to get a significant harvest.

      We're in south GA. We planted our first round of corn in mid March and it's already in the freezer. This is our second planting.

    I did a 3 sisters garden but I’m worried because 20 ft away I have a different squash I grew that got taken by squash bugs. I thought at first, spray with neem oil but the plant is gone and I figured I would leave as a trap crop. I need the squash in my 3 sisters to pollinate the corn but I don’t want the bugs jumping over to those squash. What do you think? Anyone?

    Rich guys spend a lot of money to produce a little bit of food. The real challenge is to grow a lot of healthy food on as little money as possible, and no one on you tube I have seen so far takes it that way. Hey, if I had the money, I would ponder going to a farmer's market to buy food and compare that to what is would cost to grow my own.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Earlier this year, we grew 1,000 ears of corn or so in a 30x35' plot and put 50 or so bags in the freezer. That was done for around $50. But everyone doesn't have room for a 30'x35' in-ground plot. So we're trying to show folks how to do it on a smaller scale.

    corn is a waste of expensive square footage

    Given food costs, I'd rather use the space for more pricey vegetables.

    • @insidethegardenwall22

      I’m trying to think what would be the pricier vegetables of choice to grow? They’re all expensive if organic and fresh off the field like at the farmers market.

    Aztecs and other groups of ancient people grew corn on floating bogs called “chinampas” which I think is super cool and blows my mind how someone came up with that idea and that that guy was probably called crazy (or witch since back then anything outta the norm was demonic I guess, thank goodness we’re not that dumb anymore….wait 🧐🥲😅) lol anyway I gre a Hopi blue corn for the first time and this corn sends up a lot of side shoots and it look’s almost like wheat not corn. I’ve grown corn a lot and this Hopi corn just looks like a ancient variety right away , it doesn’t look anything like todays modern corn you should give it a try Travis! 🫡
