They made us watch this movie when i was a kid in the early eighties in scotland..i remember doing drills in primary school for nuclear war..testing the air raid sirens etc...horrifying then still is now
If a nuclear war ever does happen it is imperative that governments across the globe do everything in their power to shelter and protect the wealthy. They are the only ones intelligent enough to rebuild a world the little people destroyed.
‘’ The living envy the dead.’’ Indeed, what I picked up on this the nth time I have seen this excellent portrayal oof our worst nightmares is I noticed the Father of Jimmy wishing he could swap places with his son, I thought that was a bit heartless wishing his son to go through the hell he was having to endure, so yes, that single line confirms this. An I agree, who’d want to survive that? It would not be living that is for sure. And who wins? No One.
Don't get me wrong as a father of a first born I am about to throw up after watching this (again). But the "after 10 years" segment is a bit exaggerated. If you managed to stay alive for 10 years , how you still didn't build a wooden house? Or move to a cave. Why do people try to survive the cold in makeshifts? You can even dig a hole in the ground and set up something on the top of it. And the children are sitting in the chernobyl style school. They didn't have time to clean up and find a smaller room that they can heat? Again, this is a master peace, and I know it's task is to represent the horror. And I do NOT wish to survive such an attack. But after 10 years I think you would have some sort of villages. (In hungary the people built houses from loam until 40 years ago. For that you literally need mud and grass. If you find a stove (which is very likely) you have a shelter and heat.
We watched this in high school during our English lessons. We watched it over a 4 week period. That was 1990 never seen it since until today. And its still as brutal as i remembered.
I remember watching this in 1984. I was sixteen. Everyone was discussing it at break in school the nest day. Perhaps because we lived relatively near a big buclear power plant (Windscale/Sellafield) we were extremely fatalistic teenagers, we believed that this could - and would- happen, and that despite living in a rural area we would be a target because of the nuclear plant. Nuclear submarines were also built nearby, and there was a big arms storage depot locally.

the surrounding villages shown in the movie from point of detonation are about 15-20 miles away in the peak district national park , sheffield is in a valley surrounded by mostly hills so its possible that some of the people could survive the initial blast but as the film shows you will die from radiation either way. Many of the homes in sheffield have basements so its correct that some would seek shelter in these again an almost pointless leap of faith . the part where you see the dad sitting in a graveyard holding the toy of his son is around a mile from impact so it's unlikely he would be able to get to that location so soon if at all. The hospital scene is taken in a town called Buxton which is in between manchester and sheffield around 30 miles from sheffield and the same from manchester surrounded by hills so the possibility of surviving the initial blast in manchester and sheffield is possible but again you would be dead eventually finally the command center in stocksbridge is around 10 miles from the impact, all in all its not a great outcome for anyone. i live in Sheffield which made this film an interesting watch for me years ago

The ultimate horror movie because it could become reality, especially with the fragile East-West relations today. As a teenager it scared the bejesus out of me when it first aired on BBC in 1984. Hollywood made a similar nuclear war movie 'The day after' around the same time. While its special-effects were superior, it lacked the utter rawness of Threads.
The Day After was made around the same time as Threads. Both films show the horrifying destruction a nuclear exchange would cause but Threads does a fantastic job of portraying just how bleak, cold and insanely difficult life would be for *years* after a nuclear war. Both films scared me as a kid and they still scare me now. The Day After is available here on TH-cam if anyone wants to check it out.
For my taste The Day After did a weaker job because it did not focus as much on people tryong to fix the consequences. Like On The Beach, the real horror is not being able to do a damned thing about it except endure.

I remember watching this when I was 13 in Edinburgh Scotland.. we all saw it. Growing up in the cold war and with the UK being the naval border to block the USSR out of the Atlantic we knew that there would be very little point in trying to survive a nuclear attack. The island is too urban and densely populated..even outside the vlast zones the desperate scramble for food and resources would be pointless. When we had something real to worry about we had a society that was focused on serious issues.. unlike today where DEI is more important than fire fighting!

The BBC saw how everyone was happy in Thatchers Britain so spitefully set out to ruin it with doomy crap like this and then the guilt trippy Band Aid rip off.
Ban it? Why? One might think this movie is more necessary now than ever. In current times there is almost no awareness about the dangers of nuclear war.
I got around to watching this film sometime in October last year (2024) after being exposed to clips of this film for 2 years I was pretty much desensitised to the idea of Nuclear Holocaust and Omnicide
It was my understanding that when ths movie was made, the BBC found it to be so disturbing that it wasnt released to the public for quite some time. Much more frightening than The Day After, but the point is the same...nuclear war is unthinkable. When the Russian speak of using nukes in Ukraine, I want Putin to envision himselc az an average person dealing with the fallout like those in the movie.
Iam Scottish and British. We do remember this. I was 13 when we were shown this by the BBC. It was horrific. I watched it again 2 months ago. It is even more horrific now than it was then. So yes we do remember. Thank you.

Wow! I wish someone would make a proper authoritative movie about the implications of current international relations crises, it could have a positive impact whereas today's computer-game-fantasy-type films do not. This reminds of how "The Day After" of 1982 influenced public sentiment to support denuclearization. Pity that historic Reagan-Gorbachov treaty was not taken seriously and monitored properly by governments thereafter. We may not have been at a few seconds to midnight on the Doomsday Clock right now.
In the event of a nuclear attack, the royals would all be shuttled into the nuclear bunker beneath the Ministry of Defence. All the more reason to view the survivors as the unlucky ones...
The movie was made a few years after Argentina attacked the UK.. in 1982.. it should also be pointed out that the man who says that is an official and his nationalism is shown to be stupid. The whole point of "Threads" is how we are all linked together.. ;)
Well, the movie was made to rise awarness so it shows us a scenario closer to the worst case. Radiation from blasts (except ground zeros) is only a factor for a brief period of time, days to maximum weeks. Nuclear winter, which causes the biggest problem in the in the long term is highley controversial. Studies assume that the soot from firestorms will block the sunlight for years, but first all the dust needs to reach the stratosphere where it can't rain down. And that's the point, no firestorm ever recorded genereted sufficient updrafts to convey soot into the stratosphere and mushroom clouds wouldn't do the job either, however they would demage the ozon layer to a considerable dagree. If we assume this as the lets call it "best case scenario" we we'd still see a lot of similarities to threads, with famine, diseases, riots and living conditions like 200 years ago but the death toll in the long term would still be lower since agriclture would basically be possible (in the worst case scenario with -10k it wouldn't be possible at all in the UK) so the reamaining population not at the permanent brink of starvation could keep up a functioning society and participate in laborious rebuilding campains.
They made us watch this movie when i was a kid in the early eighties in scotland..i remember doing drills in primary school for nuclear war..testing the air raid sirens etc...horrifying then still is now

The BBC saw how everyone was happy in Thatchers Britain so spitefully set out to ruin it with doomy crap like this and then the guilt trippy Band Aid rip off.
Que horror. Me encantó.

Well done for uploading brother! They keep trying ban it. Outstanding xx
Ban it? Why? One might think this movie is more necessary now than ever. In current times there is almost no awareness about the dangers of nuclear war.
Nobody has ever tried to ban it.
I got around to watching this film sometime in October last year (2024) after being exposed to clips of this film for 2 years I was pretty much desensitised to the idea of Nuclear Holocaust and Omnicide
I very much doubt we'll get any warning in the UK anymore. No investment in protection of the public here for at least 30 years now!
I wonder why they are showing this now?😮😮😮😢😢
Threads: hilachas o jirones.
Why didn't they fly away
La tercera vez que la veo . Y interesante el acento del norte
Truly terrifying.
This reminded me just how shite the UK was in the 80s. Oh, hang on. It still is.
Iam Scottish and British. We do remember this. I was 13 when we were shown this by the BBC. It was horrific. I watched it again 2 months ago. It is even more horrific now than it was then. So yes we do remember. Thank you.
@@tommyhutchinson678Hola . Soy de Argentina. Y tengo casi tu misma edad.
Those of us who do remember it oppose war. Those who do not, or who simply do not care, they are the ones holding the reins.
So depressing hard to watch especially when you have kids ,,, give ya nightmares
great movie
realistic documentary, the consequences would be terrible
"....bloody 'ell." Hilarious! 🤣
This film should be shown to the world leaders before they get any ideas that war is a good thing.
Putin would see it as a training film.
ay caramba
This movie just might become reality
Imminent ...... utmost certainty!!!
scariest your ever gonna see in film
Stuff the royal house
I agree with you 100%. Stuff The Monarchy. Down with the bloody corrupt lot of em.
In the event of a nuclear attack, the royals would all be shuttled into the nuclear bunker beneath the Ministry of Defence.
All the more reason to view the survivors as the unlucky ones...
I like a good British comedy.
Horrific stuff...god hope it never comes upon us...x😊
Scary stuff
'The Day After' was a Disneyfied, US-centric, sanitised account of a nuclear conflict, where the true aftermath was ignored.
Prepers watching this . .why bother?
This nearly happened in the 80s so glad it didn't it would b a dead planet now..if it did...enjoy peeps 😢
Buena musica
The movie was made a few years after Argentina attacked the UK.. in 1982.. it should also be pointed out that the man who says that is an official and his nationalism is shown to be stupid. The whole point of "Threads" is how we are all linked together.. ;)
And he said it with a smile on his face, he was joking. @@TheBatmansbrother
Mataron a 21 invasores.
Putin may bring what the cold war didn't.
not really sure we would get to six months and I think the death totals estimated are underestimated
