This reminds me so much of how I fully completed the elixir golem challenge when it came out. I had 10 elixir, placed elixir golem, mirrored it and then went ahead and cloned it. Back then only the little things gave elixir. I think it always threecrowned, either the first time I did the push or the second time. Probably the only reason why I somehow had beaten that challenge, but the game was much more chill and casual back then I believe.
