that false tone Bb in the third to last measure of the Tosca Act III, Fig 42 is insanely impressive in terms of volume

@@darklordbingus8705 Yes it's very powerful, although not actually a false tone. This is an instrument in 18-ft B-flat, so that Bb1 is just the regular first overtone.

@@jackamck ahhh I see. I didn't realize they used to make these in that tuning. Either way dude, your channel is fascinating!

@@darklordbingus8705 Yeah, 'Verdi' cimbassos were all in low B-flat until at least after WWII. Well, more accurately, there were earlier valved bass trombones in F as well... But the "trombone basso" that Verdi advocated for and eventually became commonly known as a cimbasso was always in low B-flat.

Looks like the deformed love child of a trombone and a euphonium. I don't care for cimbassos - including the modern ones - because the sound is always brassy; it seems as if it can be played no other way.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, the valved trombone type of cimbassos do have a very brassy sound at all above low dynamic levels. Personally I think the sound is great, as long as there isn't also this very strong 'dark' fundamental sound as well, which is the problem with modern versions of this instrument that have the same bore size as modern C and Bb tubas!
