    The allies had already agreed between themselves that unconditional surrender was the only course open to Germany - therefore the visit to the Russians to secure peace on any terms - apart from unconditional surrender - was not an option.

      Their hopes were raised when Roosevelt died, hoping that the new President would take a different attitude, seeing as hordes of Soviet troops were occupying much of Eastern Europe. BUT as the man said, they were grasping at straws.

    Goering was an ace fighter pilot in WW1, but that was all. He had no experience in heading a huge military organisation such as the German Luftwaffe and turned out to be utterly useless at his job. He was more interested in collecting plundered art pieces, posing in fantasy uniforms and enjoying a decadent life style which included gluttony and drugs. One could argue that he wasn't even really a war criminal. It's recorded that he tried to talk Hitler out of invading Poland and kicking off the war, not because he was some sort of pacifist but because he knew that a war could one day potentially end his exuberant lifestyle. How right he turned out to be. One of his last words before he was found poisoned in his cell was: "at least I had 12 years of good living".
    Goebels was called the poisonous dwarf behind his back by his Nazi comrades. He had a clubfoot and was well under average height, something he must have been very conscious of when among stropping German guards. He was probably the most intelligent of the top Nazis, the most dangerous and together with Hitler the most culpable. Without Goebels' propaganda machine Hitler probably would never have reach such a position of power to be able to drag the German people cheering and waving flags into an unwinnable war.

      @@mikethespike7579 Actually that was never a requirement. If anything Goering was the best actual manager of the lot (when he wasn’t absolutely stoned on opiates). His management was what got him sentenced to death - he managed the concentration camps and Gestapo as well as the Luftwaffe.

    • @mikethespike7579
      @mikethespike7579 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@allangibson8494 Goering created the Prussian wing of the Gestapo in 1933 and a year later handed the organisation over to Himmler who built it into the feared and formidable national organisation it became to be known as. Goering had nothing to do with the Gestapo's activities after that.
      He also had nothing to do with the concentration camps, although he will have known about them and their function.
      He oversaw the development and production of aircraft and therefore most certainly knew about the use of forced prisoner labour in the factories.
      A lot of Nazis used forced labour in this way, Speer was one of them, all of who after the war were condemned to just a few years of prison.
      Braun of V1 and V2 fame and later head of the US space program didn't even have to stand trial.
      There is no evidence that Goering committed any atrocities, had atrocities committed on his orders or headed any organisation that committed atrocities. He was condemned to death in Nuremberg solely for his part as a leading member of Hitler's government in waging a genocidal war against Germany's neighbours.

      @@mikethespike7579 Goering ordered his underling Reinhard Heydrich to organise the “final solution”.
      Goering was very much involved in the concentration camps.
      It was part of the evidence presented to the Nuremberg Trials.
      The Luftwaffe was also occasionally involved in direct actions against Jewish populations too with the Luftwaffe ground forces being directly involved (not as often as the Wehrmacht but there are recorded incidents).

      None from even more deranged blood thirsty Bolsheviks/Commissar. But well lets just say believe it or not during operation Barbarossa many Russian citizens literally welcomed the Germans with open arms as they were against the new Soviet Regime and were treated quite well by the Germans in fact, the same does not go the other way and thats the difference, not saying there weren't also many soviet towns and cities that were just demolished by Germans as well of course but I am saying the Bolshevik's were far more bloody thirsty and inhumane then even the Germans were on average. Now you could of course argue with fair reasons to some extent but nevertheless that is the reason why people like Goehring did what he did to his children not to mention this was further demonstrated by the estimated 2 + million German girls teens woman and elderly raped just by the Soviets alone immediately following the end of the war.

      Joseph would have been hanged by the Soviets. His wife is a sad case who was very delusional and blind to reality, as what you can expect from a model Nazi wife devoted to her husband and belief in the Fuhrer and Party. The saddest part, of coarse, is the children. They could very well have survived the war had other choices been made, even better if they were captured by the Allies instead of the Soviets. But still, even with the Soviets, there's a chance they could have survived, but to Magda the Soviets were truly the barbarians just as Nazi propaganda shouted for years, and to Joseph, his children might simply not survive because of who he is. It's hard to really say what an alternative outcome could have been, but that they murdered their own children remains a sad, even evil, act.

    The thing about Goring’s telegram was an error. Goring had thought that Hitler was dead at that point, and that he was doing was he was supposed to do as second, taking over the government. It was misinterpreted and Hitler thought that Goring was attempting a coup, so removed him from his posts. As far as the children go, the Soviets would have thought of capturing them as a great coup and would have reeducated them. It’s highly doubtful the would have harmed them. The publicity of keeping them would have been overwhelming. Remember that the soviets treated the high officers they captured during the war with great respect.

      Goering did not think Hitler was dead. His telegram is specifically addressed to Hitler and asks him if he, Goering, should take over, based on Hitler's previous written instructions, because he is cut off. It then goes on to say that if he doesn't hear back, he will assume Hitler is dead and proceed to assume leadership. You are right that this was really entirely reasonable and proper. My understanding is that it was Bormann who gave it the sinister misunderstanding, because he had very substantial control over Hitler and wanted to maintain that position of power behind te throne.

    Just think of how the war could've went if Hitler had sacked Goering after the Battle of Britain (or better yet, before!). With Adolf Galland, Erhardt Milch, Kurt Student, or even Hans Ulrich Rudel in charge, Germany's Luftwaffe would've been given the priority it deserved... the Mighty 8th Air Force and the RAF would've faced hundreds of Me.262 jet fighters [instead of a half-dozen at any one time], and the V-1s and V-2s would've been used against the onslaughting Red Army instead (imagine Moscow hit with V'2s, and Stalin killed). If Hitler wasn't so high on meth and other drugs after 1942, which effectively eliminated his sleep and judgment, the war might have gone quite differently.

    I don't understand how some people don't understand things. Magda was their mother of course she loved her children and was not some heartlessly monster who wanted all the worst for the children. As their mother, she introduced a danger to them that they were Soviets. They heard what was going on outside the Führer's bunker and couldn't allow first of all Joseph didn't let anything like this happen to his family. I hope they rest in peace together 🥀

    • @jeffro221
      @jeffro221 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You have a big imagination. Goebels killed his whole family and himself. If the parents had not been monsters, all they had to do was place their children in the custody of a trusted friend or someone who worked for them, put them all in a car before the end came, and have them drive to the Americans and British. The children could have lived. If Goebels and his wife wanted to commit suicide themselves, that was their choice, But to kill innocent children was murder, and that is what monsters do. Quit trying to make Goebels and wife innocent. They were not.
