  • A look at more essential chord vocabulary. I find that the best way build a more substantive system for working with chord shapes is to begin to understand their role within a key. Hopefully learning these scale sequences is helping with that!

Thanks Trevor. I really enjoy these slower videos where you have a little chat and on screen tabs and stuff. I know they take more time to make and I just want to say I appreciate these videos my dude.

Underrated video.. apply those chords names and shapes to any key and avoid the degrees where 9ths aren't used and baby you got a write-in-any-key stew goin

Hey Trevor, how are you? Love this lesson dude, any chance you could further explain why the 9th would be too dissonant for some chords, any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Best explanation I can give is that the 9th chord build on the locrian and phrygian scale is a flat 9.
I always look at the fretboard and see whether the next chord in the sequence (when going up) is one fret away.
If it is then building a 9 from the current chord would be a flat 9 and if you force a normal 9 in it (2 frets away and an octave up) then it would be out of key, which also isn't smooth usually.
Although you can try using the flat 9 chord on the G chord in C major (or in the key of the video the D), sounds amazing to resolve back to C major

I dont think the difference between 7ths and 9ths should focus on dissonance, probably more just with that the C# in a Bm9 isnt in G major etc

      It's theory. 7th chord and 9th cord.
You take 1,3,5 intervals of any major chord and then add either the 7th and 9th.
The 1 is the first note of the chord, so if it's a C chord, the C is one.
Then play the C major scale. The third note you play of the scale is E. That's the 3. Then continue with the scale to find the 5(G) and then add 7(B) & or 9(D)
Before you do any of this, learn all of the notes on the neck. That's the number one thing all guitarist should do. Learn the notes of the neck.
I'm learning theory so I'm in the same boat. Once you start learning it, you reveal an entire world of guitar you were never familiar with. It's worth the journey.
