  • How would a large-scale implementation of self-driving technology affect Stockholm’s transportation system? What positive impact would it have and how would it affect public transport? This has been explored by KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, and on January 17 2023 Erik Almlöf from KTH/ITRL presented their findings during a Lunch & Learn.
KTH has recently published a new study on this topic and the findings indicate large gains in accessibility, mainly due to new user groups, including children, getting access to the car mode, and that this might decrease the use of public transport, walking and cycling. The researchers explored different trip purposes (e.g. commuting or recreational trips) and variation in impacts for different geographies and found large variations.
In order to further understand the results and their implications, we invited the main author, Erik Almlöf for a discussion on the paper. Erik Almlöf has worked within the transport field for ten years as an analyst and is currently doing his PhD at the Integrated Transport Research Lab (ITRL) at KTH, investigating societal impacts of self-driving vehicles.
The event was hosted by Malin Andersson, Program Director Drive Sweden and Rodrigue Al Fahel, Drive Sweden's International Coordinator.
