  • My experience on replacing the low trs 2 with the gotoh. Lot's of confusion out there on if the gotoh fits the Ibanez JS body and route...it does, perfectly. You're welcome.

    If any one's interested - Tom Morello and Buckethead use the faulty nut to create percussive effects.. Ibanez offered to replace this Tremelo unit on their guitars and they elected to keep them as the faulty nut creates this unique percussive effect when rattling the bar back and forward.

    Cool mod mate. The Gotoh is pretty crazy in terms of quality. Makes me wonder why on earth anyone would spend the money on an OFR.

  • @darrkstarg
    @darrkstarg 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I did this with my Jackson Dinky and also got the bigblock brass sustain block upgrade from floyd upgrades. Absolutely amazing sound and sustain. The reason for this was that the brass sustain block that came with the Gotoh unit was too long and I was able to get a shorter, but much thicker block which fit perfectly. Your video actually helped me make the choice, as I was doing research and found that everyone is praising the Gotoh units as better than OFR. Thank-you.

    Ive been thinking of replacing my Korean FR's with these. This video has definitely helped. They're modestly priced as well, considering their quality and the cost of other double locking trems.

    Tip for the gotoh replacement. Pull the locking screw out of the back of the bridge and saw it down a bit instead of modifying the cavity.

    Gotoh is better than a Floyd .... period
    .. just sayin
    I just picked up a RG with a Zero II (?) and will be putting on a Gotoh.
    My 80's guitars have the OLD Gotoh with offset string block pieces and they are hard to find. 20 years on a string block isn't bad.
    Did you switch the pivot poles ?? because they are big and have a pin that extends to the bottom of the hole and caries sustain through the bridge as well.
    (edit) Nevermind, just saw your video on replacing those

    Great video! You have answered all my thoughts on this conversion. I've had a JS100 for years but never played it much because of the trem. I'm definitely going to go for this conversion - thanks a lot!
    Note: I think I'll change the posts as well though ....

    hi, just one question. Did you have problems using the stock pivots/stubs instead the white bigger? cause I'll have the same problem replacing a trs floyd with a original one ... and, if it doesn't work bad, I think I won't enlarge the holes like you did

    This is such an easy video to follow! I have the very same red JS-100 and want to exchange units, but I'm getting a bit confused when placing the online order. There are quite a few models to choose from. Would you share what model you installed? Thanks in advance for all the info. Can't wait to get started on the project!

    I got a JS100 a few years back and installed a gotoh because of your video. Thanks. Much appreciated. The stock TRS trem is junk.
    Fortunately I got mine for $250...good solid guitars, but pickups and hardware are cheap. Sad to say, these used to sell new for $799 back in the day. At best, it was a 350 to 400 dollar guitar with an extra 3-400 bucks to put satriani's name on it.

    Take the string lock screws that are going to foul the bodywork. find a small nut that will fit. Screw the nut on half way. Grind or dremel 3mm off the pointy end of the lockscrew off. wind the nut off taking time to go back and fore a few times over the burring at the end. Replace, no fouling no finish damage.

  • @brucozaver

    Nice video, thanks. Is Gotoh radius compatible with JS100 neck or did you have to adjust it?

  • @jasonrickett561
    @jasonrickett561 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The other advantage to the Gotoh studs are that they should have a locking screw in the middle of the post to lock it down....... the stock posts tend to move. On top of that, the Gotoh studs are more than likely harder material.

    Hi, I replaced Floyd Rose Special with Gotoh Floyd Rose on my guitar. Yes, the stock lock screws are too long to fit but I just put swap it with the shorter screws from my Floyd Rose Special and they are good to go. No need routing on mine because the Floyd Rose Special screws fit in the Gotoh Floyd Rose.
    The tone is fuller with more sustain with Gotoh as it use brass block (although not as big as Floyd Rose Upgrade block). Floyd Rose Special use zinc block, the sound is not as full/ballsy.

  • @ramseyjohnson

    I got the JS100 with the edge pro II tremolo (2003-2006). Didn't realise the fitting would be different, so ordered the Gotoh bridge and found out it doesn't fit!. I am going to file down the right corners of the fitting on the body and repaint it. I'll let you know how it goes. But anyone reading please don't make the same mistake - Gotoh won't fit in the JS100 which comes with edge pro II

    • @ramseyjohnson
      @ramseyjohnson 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay it worked but it was a painful process. I'm finding that the springs were too tense for the strings to reach 0 point. So i had to use my old springs. Anyone find this?

    @sild123 I didn't notice that. Pulling up you are really going against the tension of the strings rather than the springs. Are you using 9's? if you have 10's it will be more difficult.

    Hi, thanks for your video. I am writing to you from Spain, I have an ibanez rbm10, I am in your same situation, my guitar has the Lo trs trem2, it is 25 years old and it is out of tune. I want to do the same as you. How did you drill and put the 2 new pivots that are larger? my questions are: 1.How did you remove the 2 black pins from the wood of the guitar. 2. What drill bit diameter did you use to put the new ones? Any advice or recommendation ?? Thanks in advance.

    @99voltsdotcom Just a few questions:) How did you mike the amp for this demo? How loud were you playing? Were you using any pedals?
    BTW. I saw the Coreblade at NAMM in January. It sounded amazing. Have you tried it?
    I saw a post by someone stating that if you use the posts that come with the Gotoh it's supposed to sound even better ~ AND they're locking, although I don't quite get how that works.

All tube, 4 channel with built in effects. 128 programmable presets so you can go from super clean to very heavy with effects with the click of 1 button on the pedal board. It's what line 6 has been trying to accomplish for 10 years, but witha real amp.

  • @JohnnyMrHattersmith

    Fun little factoid - Gotoh actually makes the Ibanez Edge tremolo for them. The one you bought is effectively an aftermarket Edge Tremolo.

    • @PonderosaSoundStudio
      @PonderosaSoundStudio 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the Edge Zero II, for example, has the flattened tabs at the back and it can't accommodate (e.g.) the EVH D-Tuna or similar aftermarket device to give a given tuning setup a little more versatility with drop D available without re-tuning the whole assembly. I'm discovering the limits of some of the low-profile Ibanez trem systems in that respect. And, the Gotoh aftermarket hardware is of superior quality in materials and build.

    @metalterminator1 the notches in the original posts are smaller that the gotoh replacements so the tuning sometimes is off by a hair when the trem comes back to flush because the knife edges don't have totally free movoment. i just dropped it off today to have the posts replaced.

    Hi, Great video. I have a question. I have a Charvel with a Floyd 1000, its too stiff regardless if I change to less springs or different gauge springs. Do you think the Gotoh would be smoother, as in less stiff, easier to glide. I am so used to my Ibanez edge pro, and it glides way easier. Thanks

    • @raymondlugo9960
      @raymondlugo9960 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Double locking trems are designed to be floating on a knife edge so the resistance should be just between the tension of the strings and springs unless you have another device with the strings that tries to put the trem back to neutral or is there to stiffen play like a shock absorber.

    Yes, the Lo TRS II sucks but the one *good* thing about it is that it's low profile...I don't like how the Gotoh bridge you bought has the fine tuners in the back that stick up at an angle like that. They should have a low-profile version that fits this route...I would hope they would anyway. It would be nice if you put the model number in the description.

    where did you find this gotoh model for 125$ I need one to replace the regular TRS1 in my S370 and ebay seems high at 195.00$ I suspect I wouldn't have the string clamp screws hitting the body a prob because the TRS1 is designed with the long screws out the back like you gotoh.

    8:44 supposedly you can pull the bolts off the old trem which are shorter and will fit the gotoh

    I seem to recall hearing that the Ibanez EDGE trem made by Gotoh?
    I have an early S470 (pre ZR) that I swapped for an original FloydRose - it made a huge difference !
    I also really like the Yamaha RM (rocking magic) trems on the RGX series.

      Just picked up an Ergodyne EDR470 and know nothing about floyds. Been building my own guitars for years but I've avoided FR bridges like the plague. Did the original FR drop right in or did you have to replace the studs? And did you have the same tolerance issues he had in the video with the screws narrowly missing the body? I know this comment is years old but any info you've got would help. Thanks.

    @fastfirenick that is a hughes & kettner switchblade 100 combo amp with a tc electronic g-force effects unit. the g-force is an amazing box. That said, I now use an axefx ultra for amp and effects and it surpasses the tc unit by light years.

    What length trem block is your gotoh? Are you able to put the back plate on?

    • @higler.
      @higler. 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      gotoh sells three options for block length, I believe the shortest is 33mm and it fits in my S-Series fine.

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      for the recessed double locking tremolos, you usually have to go for the 33mm block.

    I have this guitar with an Edge III trem but the trem doesn't go back to it's exact position after moving it up or down. When I move it down and let it go, the guitar tunes down a bit, and vice versa when I move it up. The bridge is level and I don't know what the problem is. Should I get the Gotoh bridge? Do you have any of these problems?

    How is the replacement with the radius of the fretboard? Do you need to shim the saddles at all?

    • @FloridaChuckBlack
      @FloridaChuckBlack  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      radius is fine but i did have to shim the nut.

  • @FloridaChuckBlack
    @FloridaChuckBlack  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @hatehomework In this video it fit fine. I have since changed the posts to the gotoh posts and that made the hex bolts on the back hit the body when I would pull up. I had to manually route out some wood to make the cavity bigger.

    what is the measurement of the gotoh?? I am planing to buy it and wanted to know which one is it?

  • @FloridaChuckBlack
    @FloridaChuckBlack  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ddimibb I do not know if it will fit, but it should. I would think most of the ibanez routes are similar. the post on my guitar and the gotoh did not have similar threads. good luck!

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a Ibanez RBM 10 that has a lo TRS trem. I have been searching on the net and found that these guitars have bad reputation and it is mostly for its trem and pickups. the pickus arent that bad to me, but I cant live with doing divebombs. I found that the TRS can be replaced by the Original Floyd Rose. so I was wondering if it would be a task that could be done by myself. after seeing the video I think I can.
